I had an Evinrude 40 hp on my dinghy that failed. It went into his shop (a crappy little shop on Washington Blvd), and after looking at it he said it couldn't be fixed so he suggested I buy a new engine. We agreed on a price and he ordered a Tohatsu. When ready, I went to pick it it up at the launch ramp. He wasn't anywhere to be found. He just left the boat tied-up to the dock. I though that was pretty weird and unprofessional that he couldn't even wait 5 minutes to hand over the boat.
Then, first time we take the dinghy out in the ocean, on the way back, the engine chokes and stops. We can't restart and are drifting pretty fast onto the rocks of the breakwater. Luckily we can get someone to tow us back to our slip.
He seldom answers his phone so I leave a message that he needs to fix the problem. Then I am away traveling but I keep calling and tell him he has to come to the slip to fix the boat. Never got and an answer. When I am back in town I call again and he reluctantly agrees to come over on Sat. I wait all day - I call him 3 times - he doesn't come, he doesn't answer (however he pocket dials me and I can hear he is in a bar). By then, I am pretty pissed off. Sunday he sends me a text that says "never fails, when you give someone a great deal it never stops". In other words, "even though I didn't do the job right, f... off!".
This kind of attitude didn't sit well with me, so from there on, things went from bad to worse.
He never fixed the boat.
This is typical of his manner and attitude - very unprofessional, way too familiar, and often just plain rude and condescending.
He's the typical two-bit mechanic who thinks he's god's gift to boaters.
Well, that, he certainly is not.. read more
