They have drop off boxes for the times they are not open but if you can't get the animal to do what you want you will be s.o.l and are likely to be bit. When I went, it was a long wait, but the patience and kindness the employees had were beyond belief. The wait is worth it to adopt one of their amazing pets. I go to the Animal shelter pretty frequently and the staff and volunteers are increasingly professional but more important to me is- there nice! Every single person I meet truly care about the animals. I have two cats I rescued/adopted from the shelter. Both supposedly had behavioral problem- not aggression but I read on the volunteer sheets that they were not very friendly. Missy, the female appeared depressed but I found out she had just had a litter and she was no more than a kitten herself- she came right to me. Jacko, the male followed a few days later. Again he wasn't very personable, so said the sheets, but he came right up to me a jumped on my lap- he came home with me. That was four years ago- both are weary of strangers and that probably will never change but every might I know whose sleep where. If I'm sick they are super attentive. They were waiting for their human. Adopt an animal from the shelter- if you can't have a pet, visit with them. Dogs, cats, bunnies, gerbils, birds and I think I remember some reptiles and amphibians too- you never know what you'll find. You can't go wrong with the shelter! Hi everyone! On 4/26 me & my girlfriend picked up a dog & brought him to Animal care & control, he didn't have a chip or any tags that indicated he had a family. We instantly fell in love. Legally, our only option was to surrender him into their care for their 5 day stray animal hold. They said if we called every single day & we specifically requested that they document that we're actively wanting to adopt him, we'll get priority & first notice when he passes his evaluation to be adopted. We called everyday for a week to make sure he hasn't been claimed by an owner, then on 5/2 we called at 12pm & they said he hasn't been evaluated yet & to wait for them to call us. On 5/3 we called & they said he got adopted... on 5/2 at 3pm! 3 hours after we called. We were devastated & confused on how that could happen when we specifically played by their rules & did exactly what they told us to do. It was heartbreaking, we were ready to bring a new addition into our family just to have it ripped away from us. I'm most likely never going to go through Animal care & control again being as they don't follow through. :( We wanted to share our story, so it doesn't happen to anyone else! A year ago my family went to the pound and the first dog we looked at, we ended up taking home, they were very nice and patient with them, the wait time can be a little long but they load you up with information and try to help the process be easier for you when you first bring the animal home, I love that they have a corner with a coloring area for kids, my little sister can never stay still and she loves coloring, but anyway back on 6/3/23 I adopted an adorable puppy and they were so helpful when it came to information and where to take her for her shots ect, they definitely helped me feel a lot less stressed and she was very well behaved coming home, over the past few days she has grown to be more of a puppy but she is still just an amazing girl who without these people I would have never found and I'm just very thankful and greatful! read more

They thankfully don't have many animals here. I guess that's good, since abandoned animals are never a good thing. But when you're looking for a pet, it's a bummer when literally all the cages are empty. They do take amazing care of what they do have, and they keep their website up to date. So save yourself a trip and check online before you drive all the way over there. The staff is very knowledgeable, but I found them kinda condescending. They also have an excellent selection of free animal care pamphlets. It's a good place to get information BEFORE you actually get a pet. This is the best run "pound" I've ever been to. They actually take the time to train their animals, like putting them through manners classes. They work with the animals to make them more adoptable. KTVA 11's Daybreak even showcases AACC pets for adoption on a weekly basis. The animals here don't last long because they're adopted right away. I've never seen animals get adopted so quickly! When we first moved here, we wanted to adopt a dog. At first, we decided to attend some adoption clinics that we saw advertised on Craigslist. At the clinics we watched smaller dogs being placed in crates on top of large dogs, and watched a couple of these dogs purposely peeing on the dogs below. The staff largely ignored this behavior, and we witnessed this more than once, months apart (it was not the same dogs doing this). We asked about a smaller dog, and were told that she required a yard, because she was not fully potty trained. What? So the people fostering these animals are not bothering to try to potty train these dogs, and then on top of that, they are assuming that the dog can't learn? Sorry, but I did not want to get a dog from people that aren't well educated on dogs and dog behavior. It's not a wonder that the adult dogs at these clinics aren't adopted for months. In contrast, if you've ever watched the available pets page on the Anchorage Animal Care and Control website, you'll know that if you snooze, you lose. From what I've noticed, most dogs are adopted within a couple days of being available, some within hours. It's rare to see one there over a week. We adopted our dog from AACC and couldn't be happier. She's now graduated from two obedience classes (one of which had 3 other dogs who were adopted at AACC in the class). She's very well behaved, and people always ask us where we got her from - they are always surprised when we tell them. The facilities at AACC are always clean. The staff here is always helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I used to think of places like these as sad places, but AACC is actually an enjoyable place to come look for your future furry (or no so furry) family member! Highly recommend. read more

I had a couple of instances with coming here. My sister put her dog in here because he had too much energy and required more control with other dogs so I came and got him out. If you rent you have to have a landlord's approval to get the dog. I did and got him out. We just had our 5 year anniversary. He's not the most handsome dog, though he is to me, so this place put a nice bandana around his neck to make him more attractive. I always feel bad for all the dogs and cats here, but the facility seems clean and the workers walk the dogs. Would get pets here in the future. read more

We had a nice young Dane Puppy show up. It was not potty trained, and it was just a bundle of complete joy, but no one could help with the potty training or get the pup into a home. This place told me my dog would be adopted and in a good place. After paying $25 I took my dog down in a dungeon to his "kennel". I was curious before I left to ask what happens when my dog doesn't get adopted. They said it's ok we will put him down. My dog is 7 months old. That's not what I was promised when I called them. The staff were beyond wonderful there....the facility was so clean! When you walk in the building you did not smell urine or feces! The staff was extremely helpful in answering any and all questions. When it was time for the adoption day the staff insured the paperwork was done properly, the dog was taken care of, and all paperwork including a free vet check was included. They even gave the dog we adopted hugs and kisses before we left. They provided as much information as they could considering he was a rescue. They truly cared about what kind of home the dog would be going to. I was extremely impressed! read more

Terrible! They killed my perfectly healthy and social bunny. There reason was not acceptable because the lady who I surrendered her too knew my situation. Husband allergic and me with a new baby not giving her the attention and affection she was use to. I'll never deal with that hag again and they are responsible for killing her. I was told due to my baby girls friendly easy disposition she was not in danger but that was a lie and I would not recommend anyone take their pets there. read more

This has got to be the most inept organization I have ever dealt with over my 30 years of living here. If one of your pets is attacked and injured (unprovoked), my experience with this organization is that they 1)don't care 2)do nothing 3)make excuses for why they do nothing 4)do nothing 5)never call back. This is true of the officers I have dealt with and their supervisor. Anchorage tax paying citizens and the people who truly care and mind their animals well are at the mercy of this unorganized and unhelpful entity. It is really a shame. In the future, I will not look to them for help. My on leash dog was very injured when another dog attacked him and the vet clinic sent all the treatment record and pictures of the attack to animal control that night. They have done nothing to deal with the case I filed. read more
