My wife and I thought we were ready for another dog to keep our other dog company. We went to the pound and found a very compassionate and energetic dog and thought he would fit our family perfectly. Upon his arrival in our home, we decided that he is not a good fit for us as he really needs more land to run on. I have a pretty big yard for an Anchorage yard and he runs across it in a second. I decided to put up an ad on Craigslist to see if we can find him a better home, preferably out in the Valley. We didn't want to take him back to the pound and have a possibility of him getting euthanized as he really needs just the right person. I also like to reduce the stress of more work for our city animal shelter by trying to find him a home myself. After having the ad up for a few days my wife gets a call. It is a woman from the Anchorage Animal Control, Meegan. She starts harassing my wife saying that she saw the ad on Craigslist and we are required to bring him back to the pound immediately. She stated that we are not allowed to give him to anyone else and that would be a breech in contract. To the contrary, the contract clearly states "If it becomes impossible for me to care for this animal I agree to return the animal to AACCC, OR notify AACCC of the new owner's name, address, and phone number." It is unclear how we are in breach of the contract because our intention was to let the pound know who he was going to... After that, Meegan wouldn't let my wife speak, but when Meegan finally let my wife get a word in she explained that we were just trying to remove the burden of finding him a home from the pound and we want to make sure he finds the right home and does not end up getting euthanized. At that point, Meegan started laughing at my wife. That is not professional, nor is it acceptable to me to disrespect my wife in such a way.
She went on to say that we are abusing our dog because he has a training collar. My wife explained that we use it only when he jumps on one of our children or is in some other dangerous situation and we have only had to shock him a couple times and other than that, he responds to the beep. She said that there is no such thing as a collar that beeps... I would say that if she works for Anchorage Animal Control, she needs to be educated on training techniques. Now, I realize that training collars are a controversial subject and I believe if improperly used, it can lead to abuse, but don't assume that just because he has a training collar, he is being abused. You do not know me, my wife, or my family.
We were going to bring him back to the pound, but after that show of complete disrespect, we will be taking him somewhere else. read more
