I could have sworn I left a review of this place when we were here a year a go... but it is not here. We are going to be back in London in Feb and there are about 5 must do things when we get back... and this is one of them. A year ago we were wandering around this part of London... sort of lost. We know we wanted to have soup so we were stopping at every restaurant and reading the menus. It was a cold misty day so the day screamed SOUP. We were starting to think Londoners don't eat soup! We were about to give up because we had gone past most of the restaurants area when this place appeared. It was small and unassuming. There was a young happy (Portuguese ?) guy serving soup from about 8 or so big kettles of soup with fresh... and really good, bread. We had wandered in tired and wet and that soup was amazing. We had two different kinds (I forget which) and both were just great. It made the evening into something magical, and not dreary, cold, and wet. So we will always return to this place when we have the opportunity to come back to London.

When I first moved to London (all those years ago) this was my closest station and I walked past Nin Com Soup every time I went to Old Street. Now, years later it's 3pm, I've been running around all day and I need some comfort food. I'm a comfort eater. It makes me happy to be full. That also means I'm always fighting fat. But here, you can indulge in a slighter liquid lunch. These guys have a huge array of soups on offer, along with breakfasts, home made corn bread, freshly squeezed juices and more. The pastries on offer were actually mini muffins which were quite nice but not very breakfasty. They serve these muffins all day long however the pastries, which are just served in the morning, look brilliant (the croissant I saw was massive and so flakey!). The soup menu looks good with some different combos available however is a tad pricey at £4 a pot. It is also waaaay too hot for soup this summer so won't be checking it out until winter!

They put me just outside the kitchen where a could see the magic. What you see in the kitchen tells you a lot about a restaurant. I was so impressed by how fast the beautifully plated food was moving out of the kitchen. Every staff member on the floor was helping each other. It was all so smooth and efficient. They made me a great Cosmopolitan and then I ordered dinner. Look at the pics. Need I say more? I cleaned my plates and I rarely ever do. The steak was cooked to total perfection and the Shiitake mushrooms were magic the fries were hot and crispy. The Spiced Pear Tart-Tatin with Clotted Cream Ice Cream was shear heaven. Prices are very reasonable. PS I ordered the Hummus and veggies with bread to eat later. The Hummus was so fresh and flavored perfectly.

Long Review: Many times when there is only one restaurant in a hotel, you just get stuck with what they have - and they have no incentive to try and be good because they are the only thing nearby. However, The Docksider actually tries really hard. The chef is French as is the maitre d and they are very pleasant and welcoming. Actually, the service is among the best you'll find at any restaurant. The wait staff asks about your pallet and then makes suggestions accordingly. The food is mostly what you'd call comfort food, and commonly worldly, so that no matter where you're from in the world, you're sure to find something to eat. This is important since the Aloft is attached to the Excel Convention Center and gets visitors from all over. Each day there is a Soup of the Day, and each is hearty and warm. The most noticeable thing is that 90% of the menu is healthy AND tasty! So even if you weren't going for the healthy item consciously, you'll still get it - which is great! The only thing is that the menu, while a nice variety, isn't as varied as you might find otherwise. There are 3-5 menu items from each category instead of 10-15. But the items that are on there are all great!

Blaaaaaaaaaand…read more Gosh, disappointing. What started out very promising lunch (honey chicken! yum!) ended with a LOT of rice. A LOT. Beyond that honey chicken and all its glory (and it was glorious) was like 90 percent rice. Now, for the price for a bowl (£6) that's not entirely surprising but it was just so tasteless. The chicken was great, but the rice and everything else tasted like pure nothing. Next time (I'll try again, they are new) I'll get the chili sauce, but I think they need to rejig the formula or something here...needs a kick of flavor, stat. Otherwise, nice staff, quick service, well priced. Just need to kick it up a notch. That honey chicken is pretty good though. Maybe I'll just get a bowl of that next time.
