I was greeted nicely, temp taken, given hand sanitizer and then taken to a room for my health check. I had done the Red Cross rapid pass so it went quickly. I had an iv in both arms for this two hour appt. zero problems getting that going . I had to stop after I was about 60% done. I just did not feel well all of a sudden. Other folks around me did just fine with the same procedure so don't let that discourage or scare you off. The staff reacted quickly and kindly . I had some water and smart popcorn in their snack area. Great facility and staff. Thank you !( but I think I'll stick with whole blood donation )

Small blood drive area upstairs, a steady stream of people but only a couple of us at a time. Staff were super friendly and helpful. I did the fast-pass thing online and that does save some time, but there are still a lot of questions here, plus blood pressure, etc. Did the power red for the first time. A little slower than a regular donation, because it pulls blood out and separates it, then rehydrates you. So maybe helps recovery time. Still sat and had a snack afterwards, just in case. If you are able, this is a simple, easy thing to do that helps a lot of people. Plus you get a snack, and usually a gift like a t-shirt, gift card, etc. I do it because my dad did, and then after 9/11 it felt like my duty to help. Plus blood drives at work meant an hour break!

In that…read moretime I have had the opportunity to honor First Responders, Veterans, and Volunteers through the 2018 Heroes Gala. We honored outstanding people who went above and beyond to help their community in their chosen field. One of the most fun events I participated in was the Sound the Alarm program in which we tested and replaced smoke detectors throughout the Greater Columbus area. This was a great opportunity to volunteer in a small group, meet amazing people, make new friends, and help to make sure our neighbors were protected and had plans to evacuate their home in case of a fire. I am currently working with the Recruitment Team to bring awareness to the various opportunities the Red Cross has to help alleviate human suffering. Whether it is by volunteering as a Blood Donor Ambassador, working at Blood Drives, or volunteering to drive in our Blood Transportation area, it allows people to be a part of helping to save countless lives. There are also opportunities in Disaster Response and Relief to help be the best part of a person's worst day. From major natural disasters to a home fire in the middle of the night, these dedicated volunteers are always ready to respond. I am honored to play a part in recruiting new volunteers and seeing them flourish and gain a sense of satisfaction by helping. The American Red Cross of Greater Columbus is an amazing organization and I am so glad that I began to volunteer and know that I will continue to volunteer for many years to come.

When the mammography is done, you are told what to expect. For instance, in some cases, they may need to redo your mammogram. You'll get a phone call. Otherwise your result is posted on your My Chart within a day and you can breath easier. And you will be sent a paper copy a few days later. Very nice, almost spa like waiting area. Easy to get to in the Mount Carmel East Hospital area.

From my arrival until my exit, every employee was super friendly and kind. Upon entering the office, I was greeted by a nice receptionist who first made me feel welcomed and then provided me clear instructions on everything that needed to be done prior to being examined. While sitting in the waiting room, I overheard that same nice receptionist offer a hug to another patient who was extremely nervous with regard to her appointment. There is complimentary water/coffee in the waiting room which I think is nice when having to wait a while. However, I did not have to wait long. Glenda was my mammogram tecb. She was informative and made me feel comfortable. Honestly, the whole exam/process was not too bad either - it was more uncomfortable than anything! They left our loved one lay in bed with his blue jeans on for four days until I changed him into sweats. Then after ten days told him he had to go home and die basically. Do yourself a favor you will get better care at home then here or pick a different hospital. My experience with the James is based on what my family went through with my late paternal…read moregrandmother's treatment for melanoma. Mama received chemotherapy and radiation treatment from 2001-2006 before the disease ultimately took her life. The James has made great advances in cancer research and treatment over the years. They do many experimental treatments in addition to the tried-and-true methods. I know that Mama participated in at least one experimental treatment. Everyone knows early detection is everything. No one caught Mama's cancer until it was too late, and she had a form of melanoma that was horribly aggressive and very difficult to treat, but the team of doctors overseeing her care did everything they could to try to cure it. They were busy, yet they took the time to talk to everyone whenever Mama went in for treatment. They were supportive. The only thing they did that no one in the family was happy about was in regards to Mama's medications. Prior to her diagnosis, Mama was reasonably healthy for her age. All the same, her GP did have her on a couple medications (I'm guessing for her heart and something else). Her doctors didn't check her current prescriptions when they ordered new medications for her, and there was a pretty horrific interaction that landed Mama in the hospital and convinced us that she was going to die right then and there. The floors where the rooms are never cease to make me uneasy and panicky, but they're clean and well maintained. (That's really all I can say without having an anxiety attack.) Downstairs in the lobby, though, it's not as sterile-feeling. There's a gorgeous salt water aquarium and some fairly comfortable seats. Waiting while a family member is in surgery or receiving treatment is never enjoyable. It's been proven by numerous studies that aquariums have a relaxing effect on people, and having that aquarium helps patients and their families relax and it helps lower their blood pressure. Wi-fi is available in the lobby. Elsewhere in the James, it's a huge no-no. I don't really know what effect laptops and personal cell phones have on the medical equipment, but given that those machines are super-sensitive, what might seem insignificant to the Average Joe could be profound where the staff and the patient are concerned. Take your cell phones and laptops to the designated cell phone use areas. Don't use them in the patient rooms. So, aside from the doctors not checking on Mama's medications, the James is a fantastic hospital and an even more amazing research facility. If they can one day find an absolute cure for cancer, it will be yet another notch in their belt. Four stars.

Today, I donated blood at the Presbyterian Church site in London Ohio. A mobile (RV) unit was…read moreparked in the church lot. Four people staffed the event. Everyone was kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. The RV was very clean and comfortable. It was a good experience from filling out the paperwork, to the blood draw and recovery. Thanks to a wonderful staff for making the experience of giving a pleasant one.

There are 2 distinct views I hold of United Way. They are the before I volunteered with them - and…read moreafter. aka the ignorant one and the knowledgeable one. Before - I thought they were useless and likely highly overstaffed and paid. But then, I heard a recipient of one of their programs and services speak to how her life had been changed. She spoke of her prior life consumed with addition, homelessness and unemployability. Through the services of the United Way - and specifically a program called E3 - she had turned her life around. She had earned a degree, got clean, and would find out later that day - she was hired by our company. I saw so moved that I joined that United Way affinity group that runs the E3 program that very day. Around the same time, I heard that VITA was looking for volunteers - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - a program I had volunteered with while in Law School. I agreed to give it a try and catch up with the tax changes that had evolved in the 20+ years since I last did VITA. Soonafter getting trained, I learned VITA was another United Way program. Through my ongoing membership and leadership roles, as well as my volunteerism, I've come to learn about the mission of United Way to eliminate poverty. This sparked an interest in me to learn more - so I've intentionally listened to, read, and attended all kinds of programs providing information on poverty - causes, effects, proliferation within our systems, efforts to reduce and eliminate, etc. And in the center of it all is the United Way and its funded partners. At one time, United Way was just a way to donate to charitable causes through workplace payroll withholding. Now it's the connector of so many organizations which serve our community and strive to reduce and eliminate poverty. If you want to do more than just give - they have all kinds of volunteer opportunities. I highly recommend you check them out and learn all about their programs and successes!

I've been doing a lot of volunteer work with United Way of Central Ohio for the past 2 years, so I…read morefind myself there about twice a month. Since my first visit to the facility, what I find really helpful is the easy on and off expressway access and the off the street parking. Those two aspects make it so easy to get to the building and be on my way. When you get in the building, you'll immediately notice that it's very colorful and there are plenty of diverse faces that decorate the halls and walls. I appreciate that as well because it demonstrates to me how important diversity is to the organization. Since it's a secure building in downtown Columbus, there's no ability to wonder in and roam around, but the staff are always very helpful and ensure you find the right person to assist you in what you're searching for. Since I'm there fairly often, I would love it if the added an unsecure or public wireless network so that I can use my laptop online during meeting -- which would be really helpful in some instances. Other than that, I encourage you to check out United Way of Central Ohio and see some of the awesome ways you can get involved in your community.
