Our cultural life in the Hampton Roads community has been enriched by VSO for more than 80 years. I feel extremely blessed to personally know internationally renown Music Director JoAnn Falletta. (She lives in our 'hood!) Just returned home from opening night at Norfolk's Chrysler Hall of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto, and it was superb! VSO annually performs in venues all over Hampton Roads, including genres such as Classical, Pops, and Jazz. In fact, just this week, VSO provided a small Jazz ensemble at the local Pagoda restaurant as one of their many Outreach concerts. VSO also provides orchestral support of the acclaimed Virginia Opera, Virginia Arts Festival, and Virginia Ballet. Last year, we enjoyed the Eroica Trio with VSO at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach, another wonderful venue.

The only reason I have discovered the Brock Environmental Center is because one of the organizations I am part of uses their building for a few presentations every year. It's a hidden eco-oasis located on Shore drive. It has an awesome meeting space with a projector. I think we typically fit 50-70 people inside of it. Just visiting the BEC makes you feel like you are living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. They have done an absolutely incredible job and haven't overlooked any sustainable detail. From their water refill stations using only reusable cups to their bathrooms that drop straight down to a compost situation. The whole facility is powered by solar panels, and I believe they also generate their own wind-power as well. They offer several educational programs for students and I believe they also offer tours of the facility. Surrounding the building is a wide network of trails perfect for exploring the beautiful Bay Area.

The Virginia Stage Company's "A Very Merry Christmas Carol" at the Wells Theatre has become a…read moreholiday tradition for our family and this year did not disappoint. The entire audience seemed excited for the performance, with the Christmas spirit felt throughout the lobby and theater. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The available concessions were tasty, though the spiked eggnog was sorely missed this year. One recommendation would be to improve communication regarding drink availability at the bars. If certain beverages are not served at the theater entrance bar (like hot cocoa and coffee), they should not appear on that menu, or guests should be informed before waiting in line. I witnessed dozens of theatergoers being told after a long wait that hot drinks were only available at the side bar by the front windows which created a lot of unnecessary frustration. The Wells Theatre has a wonderful antique nostalgia while remaining well maintained and very clean. We were fortunate to experience the show from a completely different seat location that previous years, on the opposite side of the house, and the updated writing and script changes were enough to keep the production feeling fresh and engaging. We also appreciated the intermission being placed after the First Spirit rather than after the Second, as in previous years, as it made the acts feel more balanced. Additionally, the return of the Third Spirit's in-audience entrance was definitely appreciated.

Since she was parking, I went to will call and gave her name. The lady literally takes out 4 tickets and rips 2 to trash before I could even say anything. For them to have no parking super close, how can one assume we wouldn't need to number of tickets we ordered? I told her there was actually 4 of us and she said there was some glitch in the system then gave us 2 seats in a completely different section. Once my friend arrived, she showed them her tickets from online to see we were supposed to be on completely different spots? Since it was too close to show time, we suffered the first act in the mezzanine then the rest in the orchestra seats. Honestly made SUCH a difference. 3.5 rounded up because the play was great, but I hope they fix whatever glitch their system is going through because it put a sour taste in my mouth.

Although the entrance isn't accessible from street level, entrance is extremely easy. Parking on the second level of the Blue Parking Garage leads right to a walkway between the two buildings. Drinks can be taken into the theater. It was fun greeting local theater community friends, some of whom I hadn't seen in decades. Seating was comfortable with plenty of leg room and space. The view from the center section, where I was seated, was excellent. The temperature in the theater was perfect. The Zeider hosts different production companies, comedy acts, independent theatrical productions and musical acts. But I've never seen them host a main stage production of a major musical theater work such as Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins". The theater experience was perfect. It's a great space in a great location. I'd love to see them partner more often with production companies who perform musical theater works and plays that can be staged in their space.
