I'm a big fan of visiting animal conservation/preservation centers over zoos, so I actually did a…read moreGoogle search to find this place, because I wanted the chance to see some local animals that I don't get to see in the lower 48. This place didn't disappoint! When we pulled up to the front gate, Drew greeted us and explained the process. We could drive through the area, or park and walk around (we saw people doing both), but it was recommended that we walk, since you DO get to see everything better that way. I definitely agree with this recommendation, although DO come prepared for colder weather, even if your trip is in the summer. Layers help! We got to see all kinds of animals, and we even got to see one of the bears as it prepared to hunker down and sleep for the night. It was absolutely breathtaking. I have a BUNCH of pics, but I apparently didn't get pics of all of the signs naming the animals, so I had to omit some. I will definitely add more as I better organize them. We ran into Drew again on our way out and chatted with him for a while (it was closing time, but he was really nice and told us to take our time), asked us about our visit and what our favorite moments/highlights were. As it turns out, he's originally from the Houston area! No wonder we all vibed like we did, he was great. Overall, we would 100% visit this place again, and we'll definitely do that during our next trip to Alaska--and there WILL be another trip!

That said, this is a very modest zoo. There is only one small gift shop, which some may appreciate since the focus stays on the animals, but it also means there are limited amenities overall. If you are expecting a large zoo with multiple exhibits, food options, or lots of interactive elements, this may feel a bit underwhelming. One important thing to note is the terrain. There are several steep hills and loose gravel paths, so visitors should be cautious, especially with children, strollers, or anyone with mobility concerns. Good footwear is definitely recommended, and I would avoid running or rushing through the grounds. In the winter, the zoo offers lights so you can visit after dark, which is a unique feature and adds a different atmosphere. I also recommend downloading the virtual map ahead of time, as signage is somewhat limited and it helps with navigation. Overall, it is a pleasant, simple zoo experience that highlights local wildlife

Which, speaking of - the animals here are incredibly beautiful. I was surprised at how interactive and active the animals were. The coyotes howl back, the reindeers are clacking antlers, and the wolves will stalk you along the fence. Entry for Alaska residents is $16. There is a small gift shop and coffee shop with good hot chocolate.

I booked the day before, the morning of the owner texted me to confirm that I would be picked up at my Airbnb, Billy texted me notifying me when he was on his way. He was kind, responsive, full of information, considerate, and willing to tailor the speed and details to the needs of the group. He truly made this trip enjoyable. Van ride to the glacier is about 100 miles, we stopped at a gas station about half way. We stopped twice for two photo opportunities, and then made our way to the glacier gift shop to sign waivers. Then drove down to the launch point of the trek. There are ample bathrooms down there. Billy did not accompany us on the glacier but that was okay, our guide at the glacier was super sweet and knowledgeable. I felt more than safe! You walk across a floating bridge to get your microspikes and then we spent about 2-2.5 hours trekking the glacier. You do spend most of the hike on the rocky surface, but we did a pretty steep climb on the blue ice to get to the top of our area, we drank glacier water (amazing) and then saw the base of the glacier which was stunning. Post trek we returned to the tent and met up with Billy, he had snacks waiting for us and then drove us up to the lodge for lunch. After lunch we made the drive back, and again Billy was willing to accommodate different drop off points.

Hotel pickup was super helpful since we didn't rent a vehicle. Lori made a bathroom/coffee stop 45 minutes into the drive. We stopped at a local coffee shop which was so thoughtful instead of stopping at your typical gas station. Afterwards we arrived at our destination for the dog sled tour. We went during the winter and it gets very cold when you are moving on the sled! We are from Arizona so we didn't have snow boots or other items on hand. Luckily snow shoes, heavy gloves, beanies, etc were provided for us to change into so that we stayed nice and warm on the sled. We were paired up and got the chance to sit down and ride in the front of the sled which was perfect for taking videos and pictures. And the other person had the chance to stand up at the back of the sled. We warmed up with a delicious lunch at a nearby lodge and made our way back to Anchorage. Overall, we had such a great day thanks to Lori and the dog mushers. It was truly a one of a kind experience! Highly recommend 907 Tours.

The Mercedes sprinter van is heated and Levi provides zoom lenses you can clip to your phone camera if you want to use them. It didn't work that well with my phone so I skipped out on that. Levi is very knowledgeable and friendly, I'd definitely go with Tent City Tours again. Everything was beautiful in early February! It was perfect- he took us to the best views like Beluga Point and FlatTop where he took pictures of our group. We also went to the Tramway where we had lunch. This was...an experience to say the least…read more 1) The Wilderness, Wildlife, and Glacier tour was insanely overpriced. Get a rental car and do it yourself, you'll save a ton of money. We did the add on glacier cruise, could have booked it cheaper on our own. Again. Just do these things on your own. Trip started in Anchorage, drove us to the wildlife conservation center. We had about an hour there, so basically only time to watch the bears. We never even looked at the other animals just due to lack of time. Then we drove to the Portage Glacier Lodge for lunch that you pay for yourself, on our way we stopped at two spots to take pics, again places you could just stop at. Food was insanely overpriced. Then to the cruise, the cruise itself is an hour long and seeing the glacier is cool, but the ship and crew were the most rinky dink operation I've ever seen. 2) our tour guide locked the keys to the van inside the van. She did not even call to get help until over an hour after discovering the keys were locked inside. We had to wait at the lodge for almost 2 hours before someone came to bring her the spare keys. During this time no one communicated with us regarding a plan and we were just sitting there waiting. Tour guide "Captain C" was nowhere to be found. She then drove us quite erratically back to Anchorage, I presume out of stress. The pics she took aren't great, not like the ones on other reviews and are mostly blurry. 3) Book with a better group. This was a waste of money.

Not only was she very knowledgeable, pleasant, a good driver, but she also treated us all amazing: she remembered all our names, took photos of each of us on our phones with the views in the background, did a little trivia game at the end of the tour, and took wilderness photos on her camera and shared them with us within 2 hours from the end of tour. And they were great! Secondly, the stops were really fun. We spotted a moose mom with her baby in the wild, saw a few bald eagles, some sheep too. We also had a tasty lunch at Portage Glacier Lodge on one of the stops. Thirdly, the rainy weather didn't affect our experience as all because of Grace's non ending good mood & cool headed nature. Even though the glacier cruise at the end got canceled due to awfully strong winds, we did other stops and had fun. Be flexible and have fun! (the last photos of the animals up close are by Grace, all credits to her!)
