I don't write a lot of reviews but my disappointment in this particular American Legion (Lakeland…read morePost #4) has compelled me to leave this review. I am a 23-year retired disabled Army Veteran and American Legion member in Lakeland, FL, and, relevant to this review, a certified VA volunteer and life-long musician dedicating my time to the national Guitars-for-Vets (G4V) organization. We are a national level organization of veterans and local musicians who give free guitar lessons (and guitars) to veterans with PTSD, TBI, or physical disabilities. We also host monthly group jam-a-longs at other American Legion posts. We do accept donated used or new guitars and accessories from local individuals or companies/organizations, but we have no local budget and no dedicated facilities. We operate with the generosity of local veteran organizations allowing us to use an otherwise unused space and hour or two a week to conduct lessons and maybe a jam-a-long once every 3-4 months. That's it. Currently, for disabled veterans in the Lakeland area, our only option is for them to drive to the Winter Haven American Legion or Tampa American Legion (both fantastic and welcoming posts). I have attempted to coordinate the same with the Lakeland American Legion for our disabled vets in the Lakeland area but, after several phone calls, messages, visits, explanations, dropping off business cards with a written request, and speaking directly with the Commander twice over the past few months, our organization was denied being able to use this post for lessons. The Commander told me last month he needed to address it at the 06SEP2025 meeting and get back to me. I wasn't sure why such a small request asking for nothing of value had to be approved by the Officers, but he said that's the way he likes to do things so I waited. I got no reply from him. I got a hold of him today (25SEP2025). He said it was addressed at the meeting and they were not interested. I am appalled that a veteran's organization with the tag line: "Here to support veterans and their families." would deny allowing G4V to use otherwise unused space for an hour or two a week to help disabled veterans in the area. I suppose I should have paid attention to the words following that tag line in all caps: "PUBLIC ALWAYS WELCOME!!" That seems to be more the Commander's focus. I was honestly not excited about the post for lessons. Other than the name, It just seems like a dark smoky public dive bar, but I would have taken it. I do know they just spent $40,000.00 on a new roof. The Commander was sure to tell me that. He acted like I was asking him for money. It was insulting. I asked for nothing but unused space, at his convenience, for an hour or two a week. This is not a plea. I am not asking for anything and I am not asking for clarification of any "misunderstanding". The request and reply were both very clear. This is my review. No thanks!
