Client review here. I was born and raised in Parkchester, and have seen American Beauty School here for as long as I can remember. If you need some pampering but not spend a lot, this is the place to go. You can't have high expectations, but you will be treated with respect and you will need to give respect to the students working on you, as well as patience. Sometimes the students are nervous cutting hair. But that just shows how much they care about doing a great job. Their instructor(s) also walk around as well and help and advise as needed. I came in at 9AM and didn't know they dont start services until 9:30. I got a shampoo/cut/blow out. The student working on me trimmed my ends until they were straight, did awesome at the blow dry, used the flat iron for a little to smooth out the baby hairs and she was so proud of her work that she took a video. I'll keep coming here because I don't keep up with my hair appearance anyways, and I like to help aspiring professionals out. At a cheap price too. I arrived to The American Beauty School before 10am. Once I walked in, I immediately went to the front counter where a lady with informed me that I had to sit out down and wait. I sat down and waited along with three other customers. The lady at the front desk continuously informed me that there's one person ahead of me. My mother arrived at the American Beauty School which the lady informed my mother that there was only one person ahead of me, my mother said no problem. After waiting over two and half hours, the lady at the front desk informed us that I couldn't get my hair done and that she tried her best. I then stated that I had waited for two and half hours and my time was wasted. The lady at the counter then claimed that she told me to wait and see which never happened. She then proved to stay go to a hair salon or come back on Monday. I stated that wouldn't work because I have work on Monday. The lady at the front counter was extremely rude and did not once apologize for the inconvenience. I will no longer be a customer of this beauty school location and will inform my colleagues, family, and friends to beware of this location due to the horrible customer service I received on Saturday October 4,2025: The fact that I was told to wait in which I did and was turned away after waiting two and half hours is horrible reflection of this location. read more

I've been going to this Beauty School for years, since 2014. I would get my hair dyed, my hair blow dried and flattened, sometimes I would get a trim or a cut. I've also gotten a buzzcut from them as well. From 2014-2017 this beauty school was top notch. They taught stylists about different hair textures and I always left satisfied. Since 2017 management has changed twice or thrice I believe and it has been terrible with every switch so I would only go maybe once to twice a year and be okay with the service (I'd have to go home and re-straighten my hair usually). This visit (April 2023) was the worst one. I went in to bleach and cut my hair but both Ms. Q, Ms Karen would not listen to me every single time tried to explain what I wanted. When I mentioned I wanted to cut my shoulder-length hair to a short afro they would interject and tell me not to. I couldn't even get through my sentence of asking for the hairstyle I would like. When I repeatedly tried to tell them that I've dyed my hair before and chopping my hair and then bleaching would be easier, they again ignored me and continued to try and bleach my hair leaving my ends dry and pink from the ginger dye I had from a few years back. I grew increasingly Frustrated because they ignored me (even though I know my hair best) and kept damaging my hair by doing several applications of bleach. It took me raising my voice to get them to pause and listen to me. And when I explained again that it would be easier to give me a haircut instead of trying to lighten my ends Ms. Q grabbed the scissors and without warning or asking at what length I would like my hair began chopping at my hair. When I exclaimed that she didn't ask what length I wanted, she then turned me to and asked "well what length do you want", I had to tell her to never mind because she already chopped off my hair on side of my head. I left and a month later went to a different salon to fix this school's mistakes. I understand this is a beauty school but if even the head hairstylist (who already should have their degree/ certificate and years of experience) can't properly do hair then it clearly indicates how terrible this place has become. honestly hope with all of my heart that they go out of business, the prices have gone up, the service has gone down, the head stylists are clearly in the wrong profession as well. This is a review, not a complaint. I first found out about this school's SALON from a friend who took her and her children there. She raved about it, and suggested I go there myself. I came to have my daughter's hair done which were cornrows rated at a 6. The next day, I went for myself. I was told there is a girl who does natural locs but she is running late. I Waited about 30 min. When she got there, we went to two hair shops to find hair to install over my locs. We didn't get any and she was ready to not do my hair. I asked her to do my real hair and she was told to do so. It came out very nice. She gave me her Instagram and raved about her salon which she is running but is in beauty school to make it legal. I contacted her at least 3 times over a period of 6 weeks to see when she can do my hair again. I came on a Saturday but was too late.the school closed at 5pm and the last client was 3pm. That is not mentioned online and no one answers the phone on Saturdays even though the Salon is open AM and PM. I SPOKE WITH a teacher who explained the hours. I left and contacted the stylist again. She told me to come on a Monday at 6 which I told her I'll be glad to cause its my birthday. When I arrived, I came in because I've witnessed a guest being turned away due to not many stylists available. I said hello to both teachers and the stylist who did my hair previously who was eating with her coat still on (that was 6:10PM). BY THE time I parked and walked back with my daughter, it was 6:35PM when the teacher approached me and said it is passed the time. I thought she was kidding. But she wasn't. In major shock, I looked around for the stylist/student who was not in sight. Checked my messages to see if she messaged me to hurry up, but nothing. It was a huge disappointment. Punch in the stomach and turn down for a birthday hair style I'd waited all day for. The school promotes their students to be late, but to cancel clients when we are. They all could've told me about the cut-off time in conversation after I mentioned going to park my car which is hard to do in that area and definitely after signing in while double parked. Coming here for about a decade. New "women" "receptionist" are Incompetent, uneducated, ghetto, lack communication & maturity. Don't feel sorry for them as they tell me their simple job is "hard." I've been there & done that in 2 salons & managed 40 girls. Don't empathize or sympathize. Not hard to be nice & provide customer service. Like BASICS! Act like savages there. Anyway, a few weeks ago I got a chemical burn. I understand these are students & never had a problem. It was told in both English and Spanish to the student to not keep bleach on the skin and kept saying yeah yeah okay and never did. I tipped $10 and have always had to buy my own bleach despite them providing it to others which I never understood that cost me another $10. It was fine. I didn't know till the next day I had bad burns. I kept asking the instructor and students, mom if my neck was red. Woke up with puss. I spoke to Heather "the manager" . She blamed it on the instructor despite me saying no and telling her the girl was very nice who did my hair just let her know to be a little more aware and less sloppy in the most heartfelt I could. I swear I wasn't rude & Heather said usually even though it's not your fault but we'd ask if you wouldn't return but because I know you and your mom it's okay and I got you. & refunded me. Since then I've been coming every Friday for a blow out. That was the only incident I ever had until today. Girl was nice but kept switching from blower to brush blower and back and forth. Instructor couldn't careless and watched the girl puff my hair. I voiced my concerns to the student and we tried a few other things but that brush messed up the blow out. I flagged down Ms.Q and asked if another student can do it and she said of course! The girl who did my hair last week I was told her arm was messed up but could try. I said no it's okay. I don't want her to hurt her arm further. I told her it's okay I'll wait for another student. Went to the bathroom and then was told I was kicked out from coming barely out the restroom. Long story short, I was told I always cause problems and they don't want me back (Ms.Q & Ms.M) I swear I was blindsided and didn't not make a scene. When I tell you they turned up at the front they turnt. Idk who Ms.M is or was but she was up on me and in my face. My mom was getting her hair done too. They were screaming yelling, antagonizing me, threatening me. I called for the manager 4 times and kept voicing my concerns. Plea's for them to come down as things are escalating. Forcing me to sign for a refund I declined as I wanted to speak to a manager first. I was distraught. No help, no care. Was getting keys from my mother to go home & Ms.Q said I couldn't go back there & when I was walking back she got in my face & pushed me preventing me from getting my jacket. Made a scene saying I hit her & wanted to F me up. I have witnesses she lied. I make it to the front after she hit me and heard another "instructor" say something about calling the cops and Ms.Q was like we don't need to it's unnecessary and in come the police 5 of them. Seriously? I called 4 times & got hung up on 2 times pleading for the manager to come down. Begging & her she comes after it's too late. All that was unnecessary. Mmm Karma. I can at least sleep on what I did and didn't do. For once I can say I wasn't wrong. I'm glad my mother raised me right that I wouldn't do what another would. They took a report and nothing was done to the instructors. They just laughed at Ms.Q & how unnecessary this all is. Didn't even know why she call. Q said the students can do whatever they want. So what's the point of instructors? Not with Heather said but okay. Talking mad trash amongst each other in front of my mom both students & teachers. Ratchet.. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I called looking to get my hair done, I was told by reception to arrive before 2:30pm. I arrived at about 1:15pm. After standing at the front desk for 10mins being completely ignored, I was finally approached by a woman. I let her know the service I was interested in getting, she rudely said I would have to come back tomorrow. I asked why as the woman on the phone said to arrive before 2:30pm. She, in a nasty tone said they didn't have enough students she did not want to over work them, which is completely understandable. She then just walked away, I asked well what time should I come back, and she responded as if I was annoying her, 9AM! The manner in which she spoke to me was completely unnecessary and uncalled for. I first came in contact with the Beauty School as a resident of Parkchester in 2009 when I moved to NY. Although it is a beauty school, it met my needs for getting my dreadlocks retwisted. If you want your hair done, get their early ( I used to go on Saturdays when they open). Understand that students will work on your hair but will be supervised by other staff which works for me. I liked that I received services for a nice price (45 bucks, with shampoo included). YES, it can get cramped in their because a lot of women are taking advantage of the services but it fits the bill if you are on a budget but still want to have your hair done. Bring with you a book, ipad or other things to get you through your hair appointment, and cash (including a tip if you so desire). Every time I've gotten my hair retwisted, my hair was fresh, I got compliments on it and never really had any issues. Good luck! read more

This school is very unorganized and stressful the staff always come up with a new rule out of no where with no one else knowing anything about it or without it being written that that's a new rule that has to be followed they are very last minute they don't teach you modern hairstyles but expect you to know how to do it on clients ,the want to force you to do clients hair to make them money or you'll be penalized if you don't accept the client they offer courses like braiding courses they want you to pay for when it should already be included in the school that's what we pay for right but no they want MORE money so they want you to pay instead of just teaching how to do it, I wouldn't recommend going here it's cheaper than other schools for a reason cheap is not always the right route I recommend a different school if you want your license or want to actually learn.As a past student I've seen the instructors do things that weren't right and seen the clients frustration and I would've never done things like that to clients especially when it comes to working on a persons head you don't just do what you want you have to listen to them because that's what the consultation is for. You have to make sure the client is comfortable and satisfied with the result not trying to over talk and tell them no no no you have to give them a chance to speak because they know their hair the best however good luck to anybody that goes there read more

I have seen some of the worst things come from this place. and they may be students but even the instructors cannot comprehend the most BASIC instructions. they have not only ruined people's hair, my hair, and have made me feel the most terrible, they talked about my alopecia right in front of me and made me feel incredibly ugly. I have been to this place before the switch of management, and I can say for a fact that service has gone down. the service is shit not only do they mess up people hair they don't take responsibility for it that THEY messed up. you can try to explain your wishes to them specifically and they will completely ignore them and multiple times I have seen them just chop someone's hair off regardless of length BEWARE they are also colorist, and not only do they say that can't do black hair in a primarily black and brown community they also don't know basic combing/ brushing techniques. they will talk about you right in front of you. sometimes flat out in English. basic decorum and customer service doesn't exist here. read more

As a student this is the worst school to get a cosmetology license in. The teachers are understaffed and overworked so they aren't able to teach to their best ability with the exception of a couple of teachers that knew their stuff. Fast forward to me graduating now when they needed their money for an extension they called me a million times once I finally graduated I couldn't get in contact with anyone for my temporary license. One of the students has the coronavirus & many customers were there and Saturday. Only a selected few customers were called to be notified of what happened, the school called late Monday night. Everyone who came to that facility on Saturday should have been notified. the school should have closed down to preform a proper sterilization by professionals. Instead only the customers who the student attended to were called. the staff were doing their own cleaning on Tuesday. This is a serious virus, I don't understand why this is been taken lightly. read more

Walked in and Miss Elizabeth asked what I wanted I showed her and we spoke she's like I'm going to get someone experienced to do your hair and I will monitor and help her or do it myself. Let's just say!!!! Nothing like what I wanted, it was horrible and when I told her I didn't like it she gave me a excuse and said it looks nice. My whole thing is, if students are paying to learn and your teaching them the wrong thing how will they be better? I spent $70 dollars here. The following day I spent $230 to get my hair fixed!!! Thanks to This particular school, you see, I could have gone to another place, but due to the non-judgmental environment by the staff, I made my final decision to attend this school. I am not what you might call a regular student. I had a lot of trials and tribulations in my life and am in my forties. Disclaimer: This review is as a customer for hair services, not as a student. I visited ABS last weekend to bring my mom in for a single color hair dye job. She was a bit nervous, as she had never visited a salon to do the job, always insisting on coloring her own hair, but I urged her to come here to have a professional revisit those hard to do roots. I requested the receptionist that my mom's stylist avoid using bleach to lighten the hair--many salons hate that question or refuse, but ABS happily obliged. The price was significantly cheaper than your usual salon dye job; while they normally cost anywhere from $50-$100, this place was only $35. The salon is nice and most students do a very good job. You go in and sign a contract stating that you are aware that students are doing your hair and that they are not responsible for mishaps. (This must be signed in every beauty school salon)....I Def had a bad experience with a haircut, So I would suggest to be very careful. Great for the money, I've been going here for two years now about every 2 months for wash, set and blow dry and I absolutely love it! Really good service/quality for the money (I pay around $12-15 depending on how long my hair is that month) I would recommend going a once or twice and deciding who your favorite stylist is and requesting her by name. She's been going there as a regular for over 20 years now and then showed me a video of two instructors fighting with a young lady up front about a service she was receiving. They were screaming and yelling at the poor girl and at one point one of the instructors got physical with the girl. Cops were called and it was too much for my elderly mother to take. I was invited by my best friend for the first time. When we approached the front area, there were 2 latin elderly workers taking reservations but they seemed angry, which it seemed unprofessional. The ladies stared me down, no smiles or acknowledgment. My bbf price to color her roots all of a sudden changes from $25 to $40? A school? My bbf advised them they just lost 2 customers. If anything the 2 ladies need to be replaced with 2 younger perky passionate gals to better run this school before it closes down for awful customer service and mismanagement! Girlllll. Save your money and time. This school is so money hungry that they'll miscalculate your hours in a effort to keep you there as long as possible. You have to pay a fee for everyday over so they do everything in their power to sabotage you. They make rules and constantly change them . Ms. heather is very condescending and pretentious. She talks to students like they're children. Every time I hold a conversation with her, she speaks to me like I'm an idiot. I only gave it two stars because Ms.Q and Ms.Karen are the best thing that have happened to the school. Great teachers and you'll be prepared for state board and for your long term career, but everything else is a hot mess. I wish I would've just went to Aveda or somewhere more expensive , but I'll get my money's worth. But at ABS, I've just been stressed, gaslighted into questioning my ability as a cosmetologist, and quite frankly disappointed. I graduated on 9/11/14. I began my journey in May 2013. I must say ABS met my stateboard needs. Your 1000 hours are broken down as is. The first 500 hours you are reviewing the textbook and practicing on your mannequinns. Although reading a textbook can be tideous it can also benefit the student. The textbook will prepare you for the written portion of the stateboard exam. The other 500 hours are spent in the salon clinic. At the clinic you are working with clients from an age range young to "Seasoned" as Ms. Brown would say. Students don't realize that most beauty schools exist to prepare you for your stateboard exams. Continuing education is a must to keep up with the new trends. My instructors Mr. Ramon, Ms Brown and from time to time Ms. Essex and Ms Foreman were all very helpful. Each instructor brings a valuable asset to your learning experience. It's up to the student to either embrace it or not. I must say practicing for my Practical exam at times was repetitive, however the day of my actual practical stateboard exam I arrived with a bag of nerves, PLUS 10 WELL PREPARED bags with the materials and tools needed to take the exam. Each step, each instruction was EXACTLY how I was taught. I left my exam feeling confident and relieved that I had an amazing Instructor Mr. Ramon. Although, Mr. Ramon at times could be a "meticulous primadonna" at the end of the day I owe my success to him. He is an outstanding instructor. I'm confident to say that I will keep in touch with the instructors and with the many new friends I've made along the way. ABS tuition was affordable. The facility was maintained and the area wasn't difficult to get to. Students should invest in a good hair dryer,hot tools such as a flat iron and a good pair of black comfortable footwear. Overall, my experience as an American Beauty School student was positive. I graduated on 10/2013 and my experience was very positive since day one,first I enrolled in the Spanish classes afraid of my English not being enough ,then my brother counseled me to take the classes in English because the licensing exam was going to be in English anyway,I had to take some tests and I remember Mr Ramon saying: "do not worry anything you need help I'll be there for you" and he did all th e way through my journey!!! Today was the first time I walked out of a salon feeling happy and confident. I was helped by Denise Burgos; who was so attentive and kind. I felt like I was in an upscale salon with all the amenities. Denise is amazing! Where do i start? Geesh, Ive been coming here for many years and until now Ive been seeing the students playing around. Also the teachers dont really supervise the work students are doing on customers hairs. The students are not professionals when they treat the customers due to the fact they are always talking and very inpatient to leave. If you are palnning to go to a school SAY NO to this school it's a waste of your money and as a customer pray to god you get a "good" student to do your hair. read more

The first 3-4 times I came here to get wash & set services, it was okay. I thought I'd take the risk and decided to get an ombre for my hair. I showed the instructor and the student a picture of exactly I wanted my hair to be. I got a HORRIBLE result. It looked nothing like the picture I had shown them. The instructor did not supervise the student at all. They both kept denying that it did not look like the picture and charged me again for wanting my hair back to how it was before. Instructors do not care about good customer service, they only care about getting the money from the customer. Disgusting attitude. Definitely would not recommend this place to anyone who really cares about their hair. read more
