I went into my Zoom appointment with Dr. Sumner feeling nervous, which honestly was expected since anxiety was the very reason I was seeking help. That said, I was not terribly anxious because I had already had such a wonderful, warm, and reassuring intake call with her assistant Sarah, who was kind, patient, and thorough. Even so, I had never met Dr. Sumner before, and with my anxiety being as high as it was, I felt that familiar edge of fear creep in. Within just minutes of speaking with Dr. Sumner, that fear completely melted away. Her presence was calm, grounded, and deeply compassionate, and I immediately felt safe. She took the time to truly listen, not just to my symptoms, but to my story. She gently and clearly explained that the anxiety I was experiencing was a very normal response to the amount of stress I had been under. That alone brought such relief. What truly stood out to me was when she explained how anxiety often feeds on itself, how we become anxious about having anxiety, which only intensifies it. That insight hit home so deeply. I had experienced a difficult bout of anxiety back in 2019, and having it return stirred up so many old, painful memories. Dr. Sumner understood this immediately and addressed it with such wisdom and kindness that I felt seen and understood rather than judged or rushed. She also quickly picked up on the fact that I am very hesitant about medication and strongly prefer natural approaches. Instead of dismissing that, she respected it fully. Learning that Dr. Sumner is also an herbologist spoke straight to my heart. It meant everything to be working with someone who honors both mental health and natural healing. Her approach felt balanced, thoughtful, and deeply humane. By the end of our call, I felt something I had not felt in a long time, peace. I could breathe again. I felt hopeful. I even felt excited about my life moving forward. That shift alone was priceless. Dr. Sumner is thoughtful, caring, gentle, brilliant, and genuinely kind. She has a rare ability to calm, reassure, and empower all at the same time. After reading these reviews, I felt compelled to share my experience. I am happy and angered by the positive reviews bc I, too, went in with high hopes and a willingness to spend whatever was necessary to get better. I'm happy others had good outcomes, but angered that I was apparently treated so differently, despite purchasing the same comprehensive program. $5000+ later, I did not receive a binder of any sort/-only random emails with attachments that weren't even encrypted to protect my PII and PHI. The people at the front desk were friendly enough, but seemingly incompetent to handle basic office transactions. Some of this may have been due to confusing and inconsistent office policies and practices. I paid for the scans, met with their only psychologist on staff to get an interpretation for what they claim to have found and then presented with a list of their supplements to purchase, totaling 100s of dollars. It all seemed quite superficial and generic, but I went along. Then, I was told that the psychiatrist I met with once doesn't do therapy only the initial interpretations and that I'd have to find my own therapist. Mind you, I'd called to confirm that they had all the support I felt I needed in house and they assured me that they had the best. When it came time for me to avail myself, I was told to Google in my area and choose someone. What?!?! I LIVE IN THE AREA WHERE THE CLINIC IS LOCATED!!! I was interested in the EMDR services they allegedly offered and other such therapies they claimed to provide as part of the most comprehensive package they offered, which is what I purchased. Of course, they didn't have those services or any others in house. I was told to Google and randomly select someone. They offered no one or no help to find someone reputable. The medical appointment was also not included in the package, contrary to what I was 'sold'. No, I had to pay yet another $500+ to see her, which I did bc. I'd already had a huge sunk cost and, like everyone that goes there, I was desperate. She made me feel hopeful. She ordered more bloodwork to the tune of over $600, and then I was told I'd have to pay another $200 to follow up with her. My insurance company doesn't recognize this establishment as a legitimate medical provider, so I paid everything out of pocket. I believe they are unscrupulous. They only want brain scans for their research. This is their way of getting them at not cost to them. They had the audacity to ask me for permission to use mine for something and I refused. I feel duped, cheated and robbed. They DID NOT deliver on a single thing they promised besides the scan itself. I do not have endless amounts of funds, so I couldn't continue to throw good money after bad. I'm so disappointed that they would take advantage of people like they did me. At least give me the services you sold, Amen Clinics! I wonder if Dr Amen himself knows how poorly this Reston Clinic is performing and treating patients. Well, I reported my experience to the headquarters, with no outcome, so I'm left thinking the whole thing is a sham. I could have randomly found a functional Dr, therapist or psychologist and supplements for FREE, just using his free assessments that anyone can access online. That would have been enough to get me what I got after spending nearly $8,000 there. No one has ever tired to make this right either, so that's the other major issue for me. I'm not trying to get something I paid for, but I certainly shouldn't get less than what others who paid the same price for the same services are getting. As I stated, I live close by so, I could have easily done several days in a row, like the person who came out of town and reports being treated like royalty. I got treated like dirt and I'm over $8K poorer at the same time. No. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I have no confidence that they will get what they paid for. Instead of ever helping or answering my questions, or ever responding to someone from the ATL clinic who reached out on my behalf, they kept asking me to leave them a review so here you go, here's your review. i am meeting with Dr. Cornish next month so hopefully that will be a different experience from everybody I've experienced so far inculding the phsyciatrist I saw who didn't really listen to me. I can't imagine that there's a better doctor out there than Dr. Cornish. Instead of putting a bandaid on symptoms and overprescribing, Dr. Cornish is hyper-focused on addressing the ROOT of the issues. I came to her with insomnia-- most doctors threw drugs at me, but she uncovered my extreme mold toxicity. She listens, believes, and educates her patients. It's been a journey getting my body back in synch, and she has a plan with every step. If I come to her with a new issues, she knows exactly why I'm feeling that way, comes up with a detailed plan, and resolves the issue. To say that I trust Dr. Cornish is an understatement. Dr. Meinhardt prescribed supplements for me including Berberine, that lowered my bad cholesterol substantially after taking it for six months. I have been tracking the cholesterol for seven years when I came to Kaiser on a statin and was given the opportunity to go off because of my profile. I trust my care to the GP doctors who advice me, but high cholesterol was continuously flagged by psychiatrists and Dr. Meinhardt and I was considering asking my GP if I could go back on a statin. But when I had my cholesterol level checked for my physical, it was almost within normal range. read more

Dr. Mitchell is very kind and patient. I have a lot of health issues and it has been difficult finding the right treatment. I like that they start with supliments and diet before medications and have noticed some improvement with the supliments my body has been able to tolerate. With the help of both Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Plante I am optimistic that we will be able to find a way for me to be fully functioning once again. We have already pinpointed some things that other doctors were not able to find. The only complaint I have is that it was hard to get a hold of her office via phone. Its been a very frustrating start to being a patient here. The admin staff does not return calls or emails, and you cannot contact the doctor. I have reached out numerous times in sending medical records and asked for confirmed receipt, and just get radio silence. When you call, you get a voicemail and no returned call. I have also asked for the fullscript mail 3 times, listed in my checkout notes from my appointment a month ago and still have nothing, usually being ignored. I mainly just get a response when they want me to schedule (and pay) for an appointment for basic functions. Not exactly a good first showing. At $450 an hour, I expect better. read more

They take advantage of the fact that you'll pay anything to make these changes for yourself or your children. From the SPECT scans (please do simple research yourself and realize the "palm reading" nature of what they claim to be able to tell from a SPECT SCAM is a SCAM. At best the blood flow can show tumors, but so can an insurance covered exam.) Just go to a real doctor that doesn't think with their wallet first every single time. Yes money is fine, but in the medical world it shouldn't be thought of EVERY SINGLE breath worth. Dr. Stuller was one of them. If I am being fair, she has a great intention, but is lead by a poor partner in Pat Becker. It's crazy that they let Pat mingle among patient and doctor relationship. She is NOT a Doctor. Pat is just in a relationship with Stuller. Which again is fine, but it shouldn't be mixed with patient and doctor relationship the way they do. Today, November 15, 2019, I received a paper prescription - 7 weeks late. Glad to have it. Now we just need to pay $200 for a follow-up appointment and each appointment after that.... However, it is predatory to expect me to pay an additional $200 for my child to be supervised by a new doctor as he takes this new medicine. I paid 5K at the beginning of this process so my child could get evaluated and treated and medically supervised as he took this Stimulant and other supplements. That did not happen because of whatever "confusion" there is or was at this business clinic. My son deserves to receive the treatment and medical supervision I paid for back at the beginning. So if your clinic would like to make good on its original deal, then please contact me. You have my number and e-mail addresses. Right now, as it stands, my son has prescription Stimulant medication but no medical supervision for it because your staff refuses to schedule any appointments for my child unless I pay more money. Please, please stay away from this place. Ten years ago in desperation, suffering from anxiety and depression and after reading Dr. Amen's books, I made an appointment with the clinic in Washington, DC. It was $5000 to simply walk in the door. I did days of 'testing', took their brain scans, got a really fancy, glossy folder with pictures of my brain and was scheduled an appointment with their top psychiatrist at the time, Dr. Annibali. At $500 a visit, I only received a laundry list of medications that I was told were NOT addictive. I NEVER received any other type of counseling, diagnostic testing, no supplements (oh in truth I was told to take L-Theanine), no 'memory rescue program', hyperbaric oxygen chamber, NO IV therapy, definitely NO brain health nutritional coaching---absolutely NO of the treatments listed on their website, apart from prescription medications that I could of gotten from any psychiatrist. My life deteriorated to the point that I didn't recognize myself, I lost friendships, nearly lost my job--my personality completely changed, I also lived alone so tracking my decline was difficult because my brain was misfiring on every level. I was 100% worse than when I walked through those doors. I even attempted suicide and reported it to my doctor who simply prescribed me the same medication. I have years that are a total blackout. Another suicide attempt (something I had never even considered before being treated at the Amen Clinic), I ended up in a county medical psych ward, which was another nightmare in itself! It was there that I was told I was on an extreme high dose of medications, one being kolonopin, I weighed 115lbs and was prescribed 4 mg's a day and at one point I was prescribed 8 mg's a day of Xanax, 200 mg's of seroquil, Ambien and a anti-depressant--there might have been others but my memory is so shot, years of my life are a complete black out. Ten years later I am still trying to taper off of kolonopin, which is so terribly dangerous, going from 4mgs to 2mgs, was a nightmare that I can't even explain, I still do not know the permanent damage it has probably caused to my brain. My God, just please if you or a family member is suffering do not believe the hype, I am (barely) living proof of the damage this place did to my precious life, 10 years of my life lost and still counting. OH and lastly, after hearing of my second suicide attempt and hospitalization, I only received a VERY threatening message from the Doctor, saying I was crazy and no longer his patient and hung up, it was so unprofessional (damn I wish I had saved it), he sounded like an old boyfriend calling to break-up with me. The overall experience was disappointing and upon further research the doctor misdiagnosed the parietal lobe as being the part of the brain that sits atop a spiny structure when really I think she meant the temporal....do they even know what part they're talking about? I got a handful of concussions that destroyed my confidence and let me down a bad path. I've been through wilderness therapy and a transition program, as well as other programs for this. I'll basically to sum this up would say that I have done a lot of stuff to try to heal or find out what is wrong with my brain after my injuries. I would say if you think Dr. Amen will save your life, you're wrong. The things I got from this were knowledge and recommendations. The wisdom though I will say is very vague and already told me things are new. Nothing of sorts concussion-related more so depression anxiety addiction. The recommendations they gave weren't awesome, to say the least. I only got two of the recommendations that I actually enjoy which was the medicinal mushrooms they have on their page. It's not magic mushrooms it's all the healthy mushrooms in a diet. The other thing was L-theanine which is also great on occasion. If I could've found out to take these without spending 4000 that would've been great , sadly this is not the case. I had to do this appointment to now spend money on other things to heal which I feel is counterintuitive. I do think they help but if you're going to spend that much, do something you will be confident and excited about for long term, this for me just takes off another option of what I need and eliminates The Clinic. I went to the Amen Clinic on the recommendation of my therapist, to see if I could get some answers and a treatment plan for my depression. I paid more than $4000 for two brain scans and a follow up with the psychiatrist. I was very disappointed. I learned nothing that I didn't already know about my brain. The medication suggestions were exactly what I was already taking per the recommendation of my psychiatrist. The suggested supplements are expensive and of dubious value, according to the research I did. The sole nutrition recommendation was to "eat more chicken." I feel this is a scam. read more

I went to this Clinic for the SPECT scan to get more detailed information on my ADD. I'd read about Dr. Amen and the scan in online ADD sites. I was treated very well; everyone I encountered was professional and friendly. I felt like a respected person, as opposed to just a number. Because I drove from six hours away, the necessary three evaluation appointments were scheduled for me three days in a row. Nothing was scary, nothing was invasive. When all was done, the report, scan images and other information were all put in a nice three-ring binder for me. Many insurance companies do not pay for the scan. Many in the medical and insurance fields consider this scan experimental. Because of that, CPT/billing codes with descriptions are included with the information. There is also an example letter by Dr. Amen to use when appealing an insurance company's claim denial. I would recommend this place to my nearest and dearest. My husband was diagnosed and prescribed medication at the Amen clinic. Unfortunately the medication did not work so well for him. I was disappointed that he hadn't received a miracle drug. Unfortunately, treatment does not always work the first time.I was expecting a third follow up call but I was mistaken. There was only supposed be be two. At the time of booking your appointment you have to pay a deposit toward the total fee. If you cancel and request a refund they tell you the deposit is non-refundable three (3) days after the booking date! They say this information is contained in the literature they send you. Unfortunately, even if you receive the literature within the three (3) day period, a reasonable person will not notice this provision until the refund date passes. Very deceptive, in my opinion. I came to the office expecting so see a physciatrist to help with anxiety/ depression as well and direct in how Lyme disease is affecting my brain. I was told I would see a doctor who specializes in Lyme and that was the only reason I wanted to go. Due to unforeseen circumstances the doctor I was suppose to see passed away a week before my appt and I understand the tragic nature of the circumstances but I was not told until I got to the clinic that he had passed and I would see another dr familiar with Lyme. I was very nervous bc I knew he was the specialist I was suppose to see. I tried to remain positive about the new doctor however as soon as we got into the appt I knew she had no experience with Lyme and I had to spend most of my appt explaining to her how Lyme works. It was awful. I was very upset and disappointed and frankly blind sighted. I expressed my concerns at my follow up appt with isma prior to my next appt and I got no return phone call from them. I was told that another doctor there is intregrative and Lyme literate but then I would have to pay even more today and travel to see her. I left a message with amen expressing my concerns and hopefully they will follow up and compensate me for my experience but after my experience I would not recommend them to anyone. Bad customer service and I felt that my concerns were not addressed. I paid over 4000 for an appt and felt completely ripped off. Some of the testing was helpful but not worth what I paid. And I should have been told of the doctors passing and been put with a doctor who understood my condition. read more

My family spent $5,000.00+ to come to Amen Clinics for a couple of days for a Spect scan and medical testing for a host of fatigue and neurological symptoms. When the test results came back the doctor attributed everything going on in my body to "trauma" that was influencing my brain and prescribed me body-based therapy (similar to what I had already done) and a diet and supplements (also not new to what I had already been doing for years). Turns out they totally missed that I have chronic lyme disease and a host of other infections, and these possibilities were never discussed. While there might be some truth to trauma contributing to my neuro and anxiety-based challenges, I'm disappointed that the infections and physical aspects of my situation were never addressed or discussed - when tbh, that's what needed to be sorted out by the medical doctors here. I'm glad I got the SPECT scan to rule out the possibility that past concussion was having a big impact, but I was also very disappointed by the solutions offered. We spent a lot of money for care that was not any more indepth then smaller practices in my opinion. Still happy I did the spect scan for peace of mind. read more

What a rip-off. The brain scan wasn't even necessary because it didn't tell me anything different than what I had already been diagnosed with previously. They don't even give you the medications you need. And one test wasn't even available because of a flooding when their sewage pipes burst, but we still got charged $5,000. My primary told me to get off of the medicine Dr. A suggested and return to my old medicine. I followed her advice and immediately felt better. I told them of my experiences and they assured me that was not the norm experience at Amen, that they usually have very positive outcomes. She told me she would speak to the manager of the Reston clinic to get me a refund since the treatment not only did not help, but provoked a large degree of needless suffering.
