    Mamacita's enchilada pie
    Betty G.

We came here for dinner tonight. Ambers Cantina is a small restaurant hidden in a small shopping center and filled with locals on a Saturday night. I had the Mamacita's Enchilada Pie with shredded chicken. It comes with cheese and beans baked between layers of corn tortillas. I had to send it back because although the cheese is melted on the outside, the inside was not hot enough. Once they reheated it up, it was so much better. My husband had one chicken and shredded beef enchiladas with rice and beans. He also thought it was good but not amazing. The chips, however, were stale. Salsa was good. Service was good.

    Albondigas soup, really nice

Really nice food, bummer their place is closed on Father's Day, I guess they deserve their Sundays off. Good food, albondigas soup solid!

Delicious "Amberito" -- a burrito from the lunch menu.

Amber's Cantina in Laguna Niguel is a small, family-owned "neighborhood jewel" known for its friendly service and casual, cozy atmosphere. It is a popular local spot that often feels like a gathering for regulars who are often greeted by name. Casual and intimate with a sense of "family." It features comfortable booths and TVs in the back for sports. The menu offers traditional Mexican comfort food and unique house specialties.

Two item combo.. chicken enchiladas with black bean queso.

If it wasn't for the fact that I was staving and craving the World Famous Spicy Bean Queso I would have walked out and gone to Taco Bell. I've been coming to Amber's Cantina since it first opened. Back then the service was spot on. Over the course of the years sadly to say the service has declined. Today the service crashed and burned thank God the fire extinguisher was close by and somewhat safed both my dinner and experience. Sadly it was past the point of no return. Granted the two item combo of Chimken enchiladas and black bean queso hit the spot. It was kinda hard to enjoy it without utinsels. The ambiance was good as always. What scares me the most is that if the service i experienced continues to decline I don't think this place will be around much longer. What could improve? 01) Bring back Amanda. She was the best this place ever had., 02) Fernando, I love you dearly, stop drinking while on the clock., 03) Wait staff, servers and runners... Follow the work ethic of the dishwasher.

    Tortilla soup

I have been a customer at this establishment for some time, frequently visiting with my daughter who enjoys her afternoon snacks here. Typically, the service is commendable. The servers are fun and attentive. However, today on my most recent visit, I came alone for a quick bowl of tortilla soup, I experienced disappointing service that requires the attention of management. Upon arrival, I noticed that other patrons who came in after me were being attended to promptly. I approached a young lady and asked if I could place my order, as she had not yet come to my table. She responded with a "yeah" while facing away at the bar. She completed her task of making the drinks, (which is totally fine) she then took my order, the service continued to be subpar. I received my soup wihich is always a 5 but no further attention or courtesy. Throughout my visit, the server did not check on me, except to bring the check. Meanwhile, she was attentive to other patrons in the restaurant. The lack of service is unacceptable. Ella needs additional training in hospitality to ensure she provides the same level of service to all customers. I still left the a tip for her attention to serving a bowl attitude. Unfortunately, this type of service gets 15%-ish gratuity. Management, thank you for your attention to this matter. The stars are for the food. Service is def in the negative.

My boy ate alllll of this.

The food here, specifically the enchiladas and the fajitas, are fantastic!! It's crowded on weekend nights, there's a reason.

Ask the Community - Amber's Cantina

Are they currently doing happy hour and do they have an outdoor patio or is it all to go?

Yes they are doing outside patio seating and Happy Hour as well.

    Do they have Taco Tuesday?

Yes on Taco Tuesday. Gets crowded and the tacos are great. Happy hour drinks are great, too.

Are the beans cooked with lard? Or vegetable oil?

But this location does NOT have this on their menu which actually stunned all four of us sitting at the table. This is one of the main reasons we frequent the Avila's chain and needless to say, this was very disappointing. Because they did not have the table side guac, we had to settle for the premade stuff which was bland and tasted nowhere near as flavorful as the Table Side Guacamole we have had at every other Avila's El Ranchito we have frequented throughout Orange County. This location did have a low carb fajitas option which was interesting. It did NOT come on a sizzling skillet like the regular dish, and the beans were whole (not refried). Instead of rice, they give you salad. I did not love the dressing for the salad btw. I am glad they have this low carb option, but it is significantly different from the normal Sizzling Fajitas version which they do offer here. Service was decent. And we loved their large outdoor seating area covered by shade trees.

I get it - early dinner rush it was hot, no one wants to cook. But they had ONE register open. So it took even longer than needed. My friend met us and jumped in line with me when I was at the front so our kids could order at the same time. The young guy taking our order proceeded to chastise us that he saw her come to the front of the line with me and made a big deal about it. Was she supposed to wait for 30 mins like I did because they don't have enough people taking orders?? Furthermore, in the time it was taking for him to argue this he could have just taken her order and MOVED THE LINE ALONG. Collectively, we spent over a hundred on food between our two families and it was her first time there so it was honestly EMBARRASSING she was treated that way. Also, just give us the chips with our combos! It adds to the experience!!

Read all the one-star reviews; they all say the same thing! Watered-down drinks (I'd bet my left bicep that all of the high-end alcohol in those displayed bottles has been replaced with either water or low-quality booze), hard sales pitch on upgrading the alcohol and selling extra shots (which we declined), but when we got the bill, it showed drinks we NEVER ordered plus dishonestly upcharged alcohol that was never ordered and then added on to the bill! Prices on the menu different than what they charge--they play dumb and have been for years (check all the reviews). Felt like I was back in Mexico--muy autentico! This wasn't a "one off" because it happened again on a different visit, to a large group of us. And when we complained, the bartender gaslit us and refused to remove the wrong charges and dishonest upcharges to cheat us out of our hard-earned money. Criminals! Thieves! Scam artists! We vowed to never, EVER return again because this is clearly part of their standard dishonest "business practices." The owner is one shady individual (a nice elderly couple outside told us that this restaurant is known in this area for being highly dishonest and disreputable), and the greedy owner clearly doesn't care about the people who dine here. Bait and switch is the name of the game at this establishment, plus tiny portions of subpar but overpriced food that gives stomach issues (AKA FOOD POISONING) as a bonus, stale chips, extra charges for everything possible (hoping the customer won't notice), different prices than listed, bartenders who are told to water down drinks and tack on lots of extra charges to the bill to cheat customers, servers who seem terrified of the volatile and hostile management (we saw the owner screaming at staff), dirty crumbs all over the chairs and seats because there apparently is no working busboy to wipe up the tables and booths properly...I could go on. The ONLY good thing about this place was the salsa--muy spicy with good flavors. Other than that, there was nothing to redeem this squalid little hole in the wall. Watch your bills carefully, people! And ask yourselves this question: how does a business like this stay operating for 30+ years when there are never any people dining there (it's empty 90% of the time), they open late and close early, they serve inedible food, they don't care if diners never return due to terrible food and watered-down drinks and false charges, and they play games with the alcohol, drinks, and pricing in order to CHEAT customers? Plus they don't care if a cockroach or two lingers about? Hmmm, seems I should get my laundry done there... maybe the owner should "tell" me about the "car?" ;) Maybe this place should be investigated by law enforcement or elected officials, if you know what I mean. (Uh oh, hope I haven't jeopardized my life by telling the truth about this place, lol.) Final verdict: Dine (or drink) here at your own risk.
