I was looking forward to a nice, rich delicious meatball parmesagna hero. Well it came with plenty of meat sauce and cheese, The only thing you could taste was salt. Salt, salt and then some more salt. I ordered some extra sauce because that's why I like it, and that was all salt too. I'm so terribly disappointed. Whenever I am back in Maine I make it a point to stop at one of their locations. I like The Original Italian, Pazzo Bread, and they have the best sour pickles. This is such a great Amato's location! I stopped by here last night on the way back from a dip in the ocean in Scarborough. In true Maine fashion/tradition, an Amato's Italian sandwich was necessary while drying the salty water out of my hair and shaking the sand out of my shoes. I called in my order and the person taking it was super friendly. She was incredibly patient as I described my mega-specific order (we're an add-mayo, load-up-the-olives household). I arrived 10 or so minutes later and the Italians were already waiting for me. The staff was super friendly and even gave me a very sturdy bag - sometimes leaving Amato's, your bag gets so oily it rips! These bad boys stayed totally fresh until I got home (and even after I spent fifteen minutes looking for parking! Dang Portland). I've had issues with other Amatos skimping on ingredients, or really just missing the mark with ratios - but they nailed it on these. I got extra American cheese and extra olives, and everything was SO FRESH AND SO DELICIOUS. It was refreshingly good. They did not skimp on my extra olives. My boyfriend got his usual - double large Real Italian - and said it was the best Amato's he's had in recent memory. Thanks for ruling, Amato's. Only thing keeping this from five stars is that parking and pulling out of the parking lot can be tricky! But that's not their fault. They're just popular, as they should be. read more

Every single time we order from this place our order is wrong... Somethings missing somethings added. We constantly chalk it up to "maybe just the B squad was working tonight" & we let it roll. This time we were finally fed up because the entire sandwich was wrong. We drove all the way back to get the correct sandwich & they had the nerve to charge us the extra $4! I heard about this place and saw it on travel channel. The Italian sandwich was a joke. Just too funny. I ordered extra meat it can with 2 slices of ham and cheese. Fresh cut tomatoes and peppers. We drove around the side to exit and one lady waS standing there smoking and 2 other people inside talking to each other. Unfortunately, I was recently severely disappointed in 1 of their most expensive offerings...their Lobster roll. I admit they didn't skimp on the lobster meat & the roll was grilled to perfection (meriting 2 stars), but it was all completely ruined by the over abundance of Mayo. The lobster meat was swimming in Mayo! It was to the point of being sickening & making it almost inedible. Had I not had to go back to work, I would have returned it & asked for a refund. What was supposed to be a treat for myself for getting a better job, made me sick! Even McDonald's use to make a better Lobster roll! So if it's Lobster you're craving, go somewhere else. read more

I love how the sour pickles and the veggies work together with white American cheese and ham to give it a fresh, but satisfying taste. I was born in Maine, but have lived most of my life in Ohio. Every time I have ordered to go and come to pick up I walk to the "pick up" side and stand for at least 3-5 minutes without being acknowledged my anyone who is working. Once someone does decide to speak to me it's as though they're irritated by me being here. We left early, not knowing how long it would take to make the normally 20-minute drive to the Southern Maine Processing and Distribution Center. My little Honda Civic bravely negotiated the barely-visible roads. There were a couple of dicey bits, coming through the salt marsh, but by the time we reached Oak Hill, it was apparent that we'd make it to work with time to spare. And there, through the driving snow, we saw your light. You were open! We could stop, get some subs, regroup, then return to the road, renewed. It was a small miracle. We turned into your driveway; it was freshly plowed, which we knew couldn't last. It was almost as if you were waiting for us. Pulling into the empty parking lot, we braced for the howling winds and made a dash -- more of a tromp, really -- for the door. Shedding enough snow to fortify a small ski resort, we regarded the menu, basking in the warmth of your pizza oven and the glow of your lighted menu. We chose the BLT sub, untoasted, and a large Italian, extra meat. Even though your hard-working employees wanted to go home, they didn't show it. They made our sandwiches with loving care -- and even made my bacon FRESH. The smell of it filled the store, and I knew ... however frightful the weather, Amato's is surely delightful. read more

I have waited for many visits to see if they could change my mind, however every time they screw my order up (btw online order so it is black and white) or it takes 1 frickin' hour!!! I'm not getting luxury food here, if it's a long wait when I place it on reflect that. It's so simple. Save your time and if you want your order done right, go to Romeos, they actually complete your order as it was ordered and it is in a timely manner. I am a huge fan of their Cheese Pazzo Bread. It's like a pizza minus the sauce in which they give you a nice serving of marinera sauce in a cup to dip it in. My husband and I have been very frequent customers of Scarborough Amatos. It's on our way home and is only 4 minutes away. It's always been really great on our busiest nights when we need dinner and have no energy to cook. Unfortunately this location has gone way down hill. Every time we call they seem very put out to take my order. We, like many others have already said, have also had our orders messed up countless times. They also conveniently shut their ovens off an hour before they close so that all you can order is a cold sub. Who wants cold food for dinner especially in the fall and winter months when it's freezing out. Mind you, every other Amato's location keeps their ovens on until 15 minutes before they close. On many occasions I've had to travel 15 minutes to the south Portland one in order to grab dinner because the one 4 minutes from my house refuses to function past 9pm. I've already contacted them about it and they swore they would tell all the night shift that the ovens have to stay on until 15 minutes before close but it seems the employees don't really listen I guess. This location needs a serious overhaul considering how many people are saying the same things about their service. I genuinely feel bad for the manager of this store because I've spoken to him a couple times and he's very nice but just seems like the employees are terrible and not doing their job. read more

I love Amato's and regularly frequent other locations, typically with great service. I stopped at this location today (a busy Sunday afternoon) and waited 40 minutes for one cold sandwich. I have never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes before. I understand being busy on a summer weekend, but the process was so inefficient, with numerous phone and online orders being made prior to any in-store customers orders, to the point where the counter was filled with orders that hadn't even been picked up. After I waited for 30 minutes I approached the counter to inquire about the estimated wait for my one Italian. I was told it was still several slips back and I could get my money back or wait (I had to pay after ordering, which is also different from other locations). Two employees, who I assume may be managers, then began to argue in front all the customers about whether or not they could give money back to customers, which was completely inappropriate. If I had been told ahead of time how long I would have to wait, I would definitely not have paid for a sandwich. Something needs to change because if a location is this busy on summer weekends, clearly there needs to be a more efficient process to deal with customers who come in person to wait in the store. Employees also need to be much more polite and appropriate with customers as they were clearly stressed but quite rude. I have never had such a bad experience at an Amato's and will absolutely not be coming to this location again. I strongly recommend that they consider changing their sandwich-making process so that walk-in customers are treated more appropriately. read more

Good place for Italian on the go! I have tried their meatball sub which is delicious and overflowing with homemade meatballs. We have also had their pizza and salads! Both are great options. If you get the salad get the house Italian dressing. In addition to the entrees, the desserts are great. I love the peanut butter balls and the cookies.
