Found Alvarez in a Search for local cigar shops. Not "smoke shops" selling a bunch of pot paraphernalia and a handful of cigars, but an actual cigar shop. Saw some old but favorable reviews so decided to take a drive. The good: all the cigars are their own and are hand rolled in the shop, as the customer can observe. They are very inexpensive, with a 5 inch cigar coming in at $2.25. The not so good: they only have two types of cigars, a mild and a robusto, although they come in several shapes and lengths/thicknesses. They only take cash. And the hand-wrapping is inconsistent. The first cigar I tried started unraveling before I was halfway through, leaving me unable to finish what was an otherwise perfectly acceptable cigar. And as happens with inconsistent and rolling, that particular car was also very hard to draw. read more

I have been smoking cigars for a very long time. There was a time when I wouldn't pay less then $14.00 to $20.00 for a good cigar. Then someone I worked with told me about Alverez Cigars, and that was before they moved to the new location on Amboy Ave. The first time I tried them I was very impressed because I knew I had found a cigar that was as good or better than the expensive cigars I used to smoke. Although, I still keep trying other cigars, the majority of cigars I buy are Alverez. I love the mild torpedos and Churchills. No matter how may different cigars are in my 200 humidor box, the majority are always Alverez. True, they only take cash or check and that's okay with me. Also, once in a while a get a few cigars that are not exactly rolled correctly or they burn uneven, but too few to complain about. I chalk that up to training of new cigar rollers. This place has great cigars! Its also a fun place to visit because there are people sitting at tables behind the counter rolling the cigars right before your eyes! They are all hand made! Its so cool. There are many varieties of cuban style cigars there. The lighter color wrapper means a lighter smoke, and the dark wrapper means more robust. Here's another tip. Its cool to smoke a cigar a little, put it down and let it burn out, then light it up again later when you want to smoke more. Dont stub it out. That's what my dad said. I watch him and my boyfriend and brother in law smoke these babies and they really like them! Very high quality and not too pricey. Cant beat that! Alvarez Cigars is somewhat an oddity for me. I have gone numerous times, and have never seen the owner. I have asked about maybe having cigar rolling classes, getting a few guys together for a party/event. I even e-mailed some time ago and have never heard from them. But like I said I have gone numerous times because of the cigars. They do make a nice medium and smooth body cigar and at reasonable prices. I am a big fan of their torpedo. This 654 stick features a very smooth oily tan wrapper with minimal veins, tight invisible seams, firm evenly packed with a rich wood bouquet. At first torch it reveals a snug draw with minimal smoke output giving mild-medium bodied flavors of a sweet leather and smooth tobacco. The finish is not discernible at this point. I feel that as with all cigars, one has to understand that the flavors do not fully come alive till you have warmed the body and soul of the cigar. The heat has to warm the core of the cigar, letting the oils be evenly distributed so that the life of the tobacco can interact with warm sultry air that works its way through the marriage of the cigar. Into the first few minutes and the first inch goes by it keeps the same performance easing the draw slightly, and producing a very good burn but now showing its soft oily silky finish. Hitting the 1/2 way point at about 40 minutes +/- the leather has faded leaving a sweet smooth core. Now the latter part of the smoke takes the body of the cigar from a mild-medium and brings up the body to medium, the smoke output increased and the flavors shift to a creamy caramel flavoring that has coated all of your taste receptors. From the upper surface of the tongue, soft palate, upper esophagus and epiglottis. To the time that you have spent seducing the event around you. All have been infused with the flavor of the Alvarez Cigars torpedo 654 and you have found home. I will keep going back because of the cigars. I can't comment yet on the new location because I have been traveling. Next time I am in the area I will make it a point to pop in. Maybe it has change, or maybe it has stayed the same. I do see that they now have a web site and have more information. Might they have been in a transformation type state? Either way, the cigar is what I enjoy about the place, not the place. read more

This is an updated review from 2012. It's not as descriptive as Roland N. He obviously knows and loves cigars. Alvarez has since moved to newer quarters although the parking is much worse as there are no public lots at the new location. Never the less it's worth searching out a parking spot and hoofing it to the shop as it's a lot easier than going to Havana. I'm happy to report that the glitch in cigar quality has gone away and everything is good at my favorite cigar shop. There cigars are great, medium bodied and smooth to the end. My favorite has always been the dark Torpedo. You have a choice light or dark in the sizes that they make. I can't tell you more than that as I just smoke them. read more
