The Altes Mädchen came highly recommended. Ample parking available, but it wasn't immediately where to turn in as it was stacked away behind other businesses. When entering we weren't acknowledged whatsoever and had to ask to be given a table (we had reservations). Food & beverage order was taken quickly, appetizers and drinks arrived quickly. Then we sat and waited for over an hour, only to find out that our second course wasn't sent to the kitchen. Nobody checked on our table for an hour. Once I elevated my concern, our food arrived quickly and it was absolutely amazing! We immediately placed the dessert order as well, since we had theatre tickets and couldn't afford a further delay.

Went here early on a Friday while I was in Hamburg. This place gets mentioned in a lot of places to go for craft beer while in Hamburg, but I was not impressed. First of all, this is related to the Ratsherrn Brewing company. You can go to the attached store and get a lot of the Ratsherrn beers, and I guess that's cool, but I thought it would be nice if you could actually get the beer at the bar. They didn't even appear to stock the bottles they had in the store, and Ratsherrn makes some nice beers. I had a couple of other beers that were unique, but the service is what gets me here. Bartender guy outside was kind of snobby even though I spoke German to him and when I ordered a beer that was not immediately on tap outside (but on tap inside), it took 10 minutes to get at a time where there weren't a lot of customers. The bartender was trying to play a practical joke on a co-worker inside, so I guess the priority really isn't customer service. I understand about giving change so you give a tip, but giving change on a 20-Euro note in all 50 cent pieces on a 6-Euro beer is kind of a jerk move. I'm still, to this day, trying to figure out what I did that pissed this guy off. I love everything the Sternschanze stands for, so maybe he just dislikes Americans. It's a shame. It's a nice place, but the service needs to improve.

Let's start off with the positives. This place is absolutely beautiful inside. Lots of details that someone took a lot of time to pick out and I really appreciate that. Also, their fries (or chips) served with their burger and their fish and chips were pretty tasty. My husband said the burger was good (he just wished he hadn't asked for bacon because that's all he could taste on it). That is kinda where the positives end. There is absolutely no flow to the inside of the restaurant so when you walk in, you have no idea if you seat yourself or if you go to another area of restaurant to be sat (simple and cheap solution: chalkboard sign to explain). My husband got one of their two tasting trays and felt meh about all of them (his hopes weren't high for variety of beer so not a super letdown). My fish in the fish & chips I got was overcooked and the breading was so thick, it made it hard to enjoy. The service was pretty terrible and is probably due to the layout of the restaurant being absolutely chaotic. I'm honestly a little surprised that this place has been open for a few years because there are simple things that can be changed to make this a great place instead of just mediocre, but maybe they know they will get business either way so what's the point? Will we be back? Probably to this area, yes, because other restaurants/bars around it looked neat but probably not to this place. Too many other good places to check out in Hamburg.

I came here yesterday. Couldn't belive the waitress told me they just opened couple months ago. It was hella packed and all the people had this "Yo what's up" attitude which attracks a lot of young people. It's kinda hard to find that place if you don't know there is a restaurant inside. But I would recommend everyone to go there. The interior design is great, food is great as well. And it totally reflects the huge variety of different beers. The first thing what we saw when we came in was.... BEER BEER BEER... and it taste good ;) So... check this place out. Good for drinking at night as well.

When it's your first time to Hamburg and Germany, you go to a beirgarten, and Madchens is a great place to start your vacation off. It's a bit difficult to find as it's inside a plaza like area, and service was very much a hands off approach. After being shown their waiting area where you can chat around a fire over some beer, they told us we would have to find our own table. We had a local with us, so this is just the norm. Fortunately we were able to get seats for three, sharing a table with another couple in relatively short order. The place was really busy for a Tuesday night though. This place is quite hip with a bakery in the front and an extensive selection of beer and tasty vittles. We got the three of sausage, whole roast duck and an assortment of German sides. The roast duck was delicious and went well with the potatoes and cabbage that we got. Very sharable for three. The beer I had was also great.

We came to this brewery because we heard they had an amazing selection of beer from around the world, including their own. It is a huge, new space in the historic brick building lining the Sternschanze S-Bahn stop. Beautiful decor, one can see that a lot of time and money was spent planning and building this place, but it was not atmospherically comfortable. Maybe because this place only opened a few weeks ago and the population had not truly discovered it yet, but it felt empty on a saturday night. The beer: interesting selection, but from the tap pretty limited. For a nice place to have a beer with friends this place is perfect, but dont expect you will be super surprised by a new beer.

Exceptional craft beer and chef driven cuisine. My vegetarian lasagna was fresh and hearty, full of thick cuts of portabella, sunchoke, tomatoes, diced carrots and loads of spinach. The accompanying pesto of sundried tomato with garlic and olive oil was the perfect punch of acidity. Washed down with an IPA... lunch done right. My husband enjoyed his burger with fries plus IPA and Golden Strong. Our daughter's pasta bolognese was a generous portion of proper fuel for walking through Hamburg. Service is friendly and helpful and was so kind to translate the menu for us. We will absolutely be back.

Lots of beer and a cool atmosphere but I didn't order by well. I ordered the bbq sandwich which was served cold with some type of bbq sauce that seemed more like a Heinz variety of sauces. Overall, I liked this place really very chill and they have homemade bread. I'd recommend for a afterwork hangout or a big group dinner. They have over 200 beers either on tap or in bottles.

Great place to hang out and meet local people... and drink locally made beers if you are into it. Great ambiance. However, too loud for business meeting. Food was decent but not extraordinary.

There is a brewing room that you walk through with explanations of the different stages of the beer brewing process. In the back is a tasting room and most of the tour took place there. There appears to be a slideshow and we looked at some of the slides that identified the three beers we tried but I think because the slides were in German, we didn't see the full presentation. Lo and behold 16 is the age of consent when it comes to beer in Germany so we were looking for a place that had locally brewed (ie: authentic German) beer as well as a good menu so we could get him the requisite birthday dessert. We arrived a little after nine...it's a cavernous place with lots of places to sit inside and outside, and with no attention from anyone who worked there (with very few people in the restaurant) we found a couple of menus and a place to sit. The server came by and took away those menus and gave us a drinks-only menu as, apparently, they don't serve food after 9 (including desserts). Bummer to find this out as their website only listed their opening hours and didn't give any indication that we couldn't get anything we wanted if it was later in those hours. Okay, so we decided we'd have our beer and go somewhere else for dessert. I wanted to get the beer flight/sampler so my kid's first beer experience could be as rich as possible. They list a beer flight on their website menu, but for some reason, after 9pm, they no longer offer that. Okay, so no food, or dessert, and just beer...but what happened to the flight-sized glasses after 9pm? Are they hidden away with the food? Does the chef take them home? What reason can't they do a flight when they're only serving beer? Our server seemed especially annoyed that we were even in the restaurant at all. So in the end, although I enjoyed the 2 beers we got (Original 1909 Astra Urtyp [a basic ale]) and the "Night Shift" dark beer [nice and chocolatey] - we left feeling disappointed, unwelcome, and wishing we had chosen somewhere else to go have our son's first beer on his birthday.

The food is traditional German, hearty and satisfying. You can go for a full platter or build your own with à la carte plate with sides and mains. As my pic shows, I went with the homestyle meatloaf, bacon potato salad, and sauerkraut, and honestly? No notes. The potato salad in particular was amazing--savory, slightly tangy, with real texture and smoky bacon goodness. Gröninger feels like a dungeon-meets-microbrewery as reviewer Keith H. said, and that's not just a vibe; it's literal. You're in the actual basement where the beer is brewed, and the low lighting and stone archways give it a cool, cave-like atmosphere. Totally agree with other reviewers that it's got character for days. Service is different than you might expect if you're not used to German customs. Wave for attention rather than waiting for a server to drop by, and just walk up to the host stand to pay. The one downside on my visit was that I came alone and got seated in the front spillover section, even though there were open seats inside the main room. The host said they were reserved, but I later saw bigger groups walk in and get those spots. So: come early, come with friends, or be prepared to hang in the front area, which is still charming. You get a great view of the whole space if you need to head to the bathroom. Overall: tasty beer, solid food, very atmospheric, and worth a stop whether you're here for a drink or a full meal. I'd absolutely come back. // Beginnen wir mit dem Bier. Ausgezeichnet.

The hipness, the group tasting - - this illustrates the state of the craft beer movement in Germany today, and the beers reflect that as well: the beers are almost satisfying, almost good expressions of each style, almost worth drinking. I'm sure the 45 people getting the beer lecture/tasting found them curious, if not intriguing. (Reminds me of the state of the craft beer movement in the U.S. 15 or 20 years ago.) I've had a few of the Hopper before, but they are not something I buy to drink at my home in Hamburg. For someone from the States, who is used to picking up plenty GREAT expressions of the different styles they make, which you can get in many shades of excellence in the U.S., it's not worth committing 12 ounces of palate time and belly space to what are, basically, nice attempts.
