I came upon the Alte Wirt this past Oktoberfest. There is a smaller Bavarian eatery closer to my house, but seems to pull an older crowd. I had walked past the Alte Wirt numerous times before actually going in. The entrance to the building is a little difficult to see, but once you know where it is you'll never forget ;).
The atmosphere inside is warm, and during Oktoberfest time (and now in November) they have the ceiling and fixtures adorned with hops. There are high tables more towards the middle of the restaurant, and booths along the wall near the windows. When I was there last it seemed as though they were hosting a party as two of the back rooms were reserved and closed off to the public.
When I was there during the week that friends of mine came to visit for Oktoberfest we never made a reservation and were always able to find a table that could seat our large party (of about 10-15 people). Most of the time when we were there we were just drinking beer, but once we ordered food. The food was reasonably priced, and tasty. I wish that I could remember more of what I had at that time, but let's face it, Oktoberfest is a drunken haze to a lot of us. What I do remember was thinking that the food was tasty. It was some type of beef and onion dish, and I also go the pumpkin soup. I really liked the beef and onion dish, but the soup I felt I could make better myself (but I cam make a mean soup).
The most recent time I was there (this past Wednesday) I got the Schluessel Lies'l salad. It came with corn and turkey breast tenders (grilled) and the regular other items of a salad (lettuce, onion, etc..). The portion was HUGE, but I was pretty starving and I ate it all. The salad also came with a side of sweet and sour sauce... at first I was a little confused as to why; initially I thought that I was to put that on my salad as the dressing (as I couldn't see that the dressing was already added to the salad). Anyway, that turned out to be the optional dipping sauce for the turkey tenders; the sweet and sour sauce was really good and surprisingly went very well with the rest of the salad - even though it was not an Asian inspired salad. I also shared the Apfelkurchel (I have no idea if I am spelling that right) with my friend at the end of our meal. That was absolutely delicious. The apples were fried and sort of looked like doughnuts. It came with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Yum.
I would recommend the Alte Wirt to people. The atmosphere is fun, friendly, and younger than most Bavarian bier halls or eateries. The food and drinks are reasonably priced and both of them equally satisfying. If you're in the Moosach area and want to have some good food and be in a fun atmosphere definitely hit up the Alte Wirt.
PS they also have an English menu if you are not able to read German. read more
