An absolute must if you are a spirit/liqueur enthusiast and visiting the wonderful city of Heidelberg! I had no clue about this shop, so stumbling upon it was pure luck and I was thrilled I did because it was one of the most interesting alcohol based shops I've visited in quite some time.
Located in the old historic downtown area of Heidelberg near the town square. It really tends to stand out from the rest of the shops boasting colorful spirits in their windows, not to mention the strong wonderful aromas floating out from the front door. When you walk in you are mesmerized by an absolute plethora of different schnaps, spirits, liqueurs, snacks, etc. Took me a moment to chat with an employee to get the lay of the land and answer some basic questions as this store was quite busy. I will say that the employees are very helpful and more than willing to give you a tour and direct you to the back room where they have ample amounts of free tastings. Make sure you have plenty of food in your system to soak up the alcohol because they will let you taste as much as you want. Which is great might I add if you want to try spirits you have never heard of and or flavors you have never tasted before.
I kept it quite lite trying different mixtures of absinth and fruit based schnapps, which for the most part were all very drinkable. Alte Brennerei understands that you cannot carry large bottles back with you, so they offer mix and match tiny bottles sealed in a case for easy packing on your long flights back. After sampling some food and alcohol, I ended getting a banana cream liqueur intended for some ice cream toppings and some small bottles of different flavored absinthe. All relatively affordable as well, so a huge plus! I'd say if you are in the area and need a break from the food scene or historic architecture tourist sprawl and this sounds up your alley, take advantage of it! read more
