When I was on vacation in Germany I really enjoyed visiting Kloster Breweries. You feel like you are having a religious experience with a beer buzz. Since I was collecting Beer Steins at the time I purchased two at one Kloster Brewery I visited. I like the feel of the stein and the taste of beer when you drink it out of this stein. I've kept my steins for years and years. I'm recommending when you visit Germany that you tour one (or more) of the monastery or castle breweries. It's an unforgettable experience! Klaus, if I get anything wrong please tell me. I don't want to look too stupid. All I have are my happy memories. Plus I have my souvenirs placed where I can see them all the time!!!

We stopped by the gift shop afterwards. They have a great selection of home brewed beers, liquors and other little trinkets. I would highly recommend to visit Kloster Ettal when in the area.

Be prepared for a somewhat steep climb up to the Biergarten and Monastery. You will definitely need a beer when you reach the top. The property is gorgeous and we enjoyed the view. Definitely try any of the restaurants/food vendors. They all looked delicious and we decided on sausage and sauerkraut - very good. Also, the beer is fantastic! One star off for the less than friendly server at the restaurant.

Since it is Oktoberfest and a sunny day on a Saturday the place is jammed full of people. There are several beer gardens and interior dining rooms as well. The group of us found a comfortable table in the sun in one of the beer gardens and some went to gather an array of traditional dishes while others went for the beer. Table service seemed to be available only indoors on this day. The food, an array of items such as pretzels, potatoes, meats like pork Haxn and meat loaf were quite tasty. The dark beer, "dunkel", is my favorite and it was fabulous. The varieties this time of year is mind boggling. A half liter was fine for me. What an enjoyable experience yet the crowds were a bit crazy too. One can always go into the church for some tranquility, if needed.

Waiters didn't really speak English, but that's OK because the people around you can help you translate the menu items -or- better yet, recommend you certain items to get. Restaurant is totally communal style--you sit with strangers, drink beer next to them, chat with them, and be merry with them. Ahh! The German way of life. Sigourney had the cheese spatzle that came out piping hot in a mini cast iron skillet. The cheese was perfectly melted on top of the spatzle. I had a bite and I can frankly say it was the best spatzle I've ever had in my life. No other German restaurants I've been to in the States compares to the spatzle in Germany, and especially at this restaurant! It was superb...well flavored, cheesy, and definitely a treat to eat. Sigourney thought it was very good. I ordered the schweinhaxe, the roasted pork knuckle--which one of Bavaria's signature dishes. It too was absolutely delicious. The skin on the outer pork knuckle was perfectly crisp, while maintaining the soft, juicy, tender pork meat underneath. For those who have never had schweinhaxe, it's a lot like Chinese style "pig's feet" (it essentially is the same pork body part), but crispy, salty, and well.."European" tasting. We couldn't really read most of the menu, and fortunately for us, Bavarians are very nice and willing to help. A jolly, tall German man content with his beer in hand helped us translate some of the menu items and recommended certain beers on their EXTENSIVE list. I was really glad he was there since we got to eat some of the best items on their menu, as recommended by him. Next time I'm in Munich, I'll probably swing by here again to eat some hearty Bavarian food! Delish!!!!

We waited a bit outside - maybe about 15 minutes before we were given a table. Our waitress was great, but it was very obvious that they had a lot of tables to take care of in the extremely giant beer hall. If you need anything after you order and in between getting your food and paying, you'll need to wait a while. That being said, I think we're just used to extremely fast service in NYC. I had the Pork knuckle which was a whole roasted pork knuckle with home-made dark beer sauce and potato dumpling. We also had the Crispy roast pork with home-made dark beer sauce and potato dumpling. Both were excellent and the beer was also quite good. I had their signature wheat beer and then an Oktoberfest beer (because why not) and really enjoyed it. I do think I liked their signature wheat beer better, and would've gotten another one of those over the Oktoberfest one.

We enjoyed beer and wine first and then we enjoyed several dishes that are in the pictures here. All were very good as most food in Munich at these restaurants is. Our server was very polite and she took our orders and suggested some items as well. Food came without too much delay and was very tasty. We stayed and enjoyed for at least 2 hours then back to the festivities once they cleared the bomb threat and started letting everyone back in. If you're in Munich for any reason - Schneider is a great place for some beer, wine and german food! Keep Munching!
