Although I should have written this review a long time a go, now seems like an appropriate time to…read morefinally get this in the books. My son has been a student at MAFA for about three years and just received his first degree black belt last night. The belt may be a great symbol of what he has learned during this time but the life lessons he will take away from the overall experience is truly priceless. MAFA is not only a school for martial arts but they also offer an after school program including transportation from several local schools and summer camps (winter and spring vacation camps are also offered). The facility is always clean, organized and most importantly secure. Master Chad Wilbur and his wife Leisha are simply amazing people and have treated us like family. Master Wilbur is also a 6th degree black belt and certified HaganH (Israeli self defense) instructor. They offer classes for virtually all ages from the little ones (tiny tigers) to adults. We started our son at a different martial arts school down the road and always felt like we were being pressured to spend more money or always bring other friends of our child to sign up, so we left and switched him over to MAFA. They never make you feel pressured to do anything you don't want to take part of or purchase things you don't really want or need. This may sound a bit cheesy but I'm always inspired when I watch a class that Master Wilbur is teaching. I'm always amazed how consistently positive his approach is and how the kids respond to him. Not only is he amazing but MAFA has a total of four "master instructors" on staff (you won't find this level of instruction anywhere else in town) and they all teach with the same approach and enthusiasm. A quick story that will tell you all you need to know about Master Wilbur...last night, one of the kids was getting presented with his second degree black belt and for some reason his new belt had not arrived yet. During his belt presentation, Master Wilbur apologized to everyone there and let the young man wear his 6th degree belt until his new belt arrives...what an amazing gesture! If you have children or are an adult that is interested in martial arts, you can do no better than the overall experience that MAFA will provide you.

I like this gym! Great midtown location and It has the power rack for free weight barbell exercises…read morewhich are useful to me. There are other useful machines I find useful like the hip thrust machine- which not all gyms. It seems that they continually work to improve the gym set up. They sometimes change the location of equipment, probably for optimal flow and they get new equipment. For instance , they got the pendulum squat machine recently which I don't know how to use yet, but if I ask Matt (the owner) questions about any equipment, he explains it to me. I appreciate that. Also, Matt was nice to spend time with me talking about nutrition after a body composition scan. You can get that measured there, which can help you monitor your progress, if you have specific goals. Another plus is that he also communicates with other clients via text and replies rather quickly so that is nice to have the communication line open :) They do sales sporadically which can be good for you to get in the door. For example, for Halloween this year they waived the sign-up fee. Also, for Christmas, if you bring in a toy, you can have a free workout. I like how they give back in that way :) They do little cute things like decorate for the place for holidays- love that spirit- and you can get an orange if you come on the weekend :) I see Matt frequently cleaning the equipment and vacuuming which is a good thing. Everyone likes a clean environment to work out! He seems very dedicated to his work, and I admire that about him. Checking in is easy after you download an app called kisi and you use that app on your phone to check in. There is also a fob option if you don't have a smart phone. Just a thing for me is that sometimes it is a bit warm in the gym. Before the winter hit, it is regularly kept at 73 degrees. They also have the heat going in the winter. Also just be aware to cancel, they require a 30 days notice and you must go in person (not online or phone) to cancel. I would not cancel if I am not shifting locations, because I think this gym is great! They have group classes too which is an extra cost. I have not done them myself, but the lady who leads it on Saturday mornings is real pleasant! They seem to have a good little community there for these classes. If I move back the area, I would get a membership again.

I have been going to this gym for many years and I believe it is the best gym that there is…read moreavailable in Tallahassee. The space is always clean, and they have exactly the equipment you need for a good workout and no extra nonsense. The prices have raised from slightly when I started going there in 2020, but I believe that the increase is justified. I would much rather pay extra to go somewhere that is never crowded where I feel comfortable, rather than having to sign a year-long contact with "dues" where I have to wait 20 minutes just to use the squat rack. In fact, I drive 10 minutes out of the way, past two huge commercial gyms that are a 1-minute walk away from me because I prefer this gym so much more. I've come here probably over 200 times in the past couple of years, and there are never more than a couple of people in the gym. It is always clean, and the owners have always been polite with me. The only issue I ever had was that they did not have a dedicated bench press in 2020. Lo and behold, a few months after going there, I walked in, and they had purchased one and had it set up. Amazing. After that, the only other minor grip for me was there was no long rope cable for rope tricep pushdowns. Again, I walk in one day and they had a brand new one. Point being is they are always refurbishing older equipment and bringing in new things that suit the gym. The negative reviews for this gym are a little confusing to me, since they do not seem accurate. Never in the 200+ times I have been here did I feel the space to be "dirty" in any way. Every time I am in Tally, I come here. I am always happy with my choice.
