I brought in 4 Tiffany wine glasses to have engraved and was extremely disappointed with the outcome. Although I was warned there might be small fragments from the engraving, I was assured the work could be done. If the glasses were too thin to engrave safely, the job should never have been accepted. After engraving, the glasses had visible cracks, and when I went to gently hand wash them, they completely shattered. Not only did I lose 4 Tiffany wine glasses, but I also paid $120 for this service. Very upset with the lack of responsibility and poor customer service. read more

A woman answered (this, after my first attempted call simply got no answer), and when I asked my question, her response was a simple, direct 'NO'. Er...a tad bit blunt. Not even a 'yeah, sorry, no...we don't do that.' Just, 'NO'. Also, it's very disappointing that in this day and age, as individuals and businesses are trying to be lest wasteful, that a TROPHY SHOP doesn't accept old trophies for repurposing the parts? I mean, can you imagine how much of our landfills are filled with stupid, wasteful trophies for this and for that? Really, could trophies be any more stupid? A 'certificate' or diploma would be way better. At least the paper could eventually be recycled, and the frame repurposed. But a trophy? No one wants someone else's trophy. Needed a very last minute engraved plaque for a work dinner while visiting for a conference. Spoke with Barry by email and phone who was prompt, helpful, and thorough. Hooray!! I literally just got home from picking up a humidor I had engraved by Barry at Alpha Engraving and I could not be happier with the outcome. I wanted a very specific monogram engraved on the top of a glass humidor. I had been quoted $250 from another engraver in the city. The reason the price was so high was because they said this monogram could only be done via hand engraving. I asked if they could use computer engraving and adjust the font size/placement to create the monogram and they said they could, but that would cost $150 for the setup fee and difficulty level. Waaaay over my budget. I ran far, far away from that store and walked into Alpha. Barry, the owner, could not have been nicer. I told him exactly what I wanted and he said it shouldn't be a problem. He told me to email him the font I wanted (he can use any font that is found in Word, so the possibilities are virtually endless) and a picture of how I wanted the letters placed. I needed the humidor engraved quickly, so he put a rush on it for me. His price? $45!!! And if I hadn't had a rush put on it, it would have cost a measly $32! If you have something that needs engraving, DEFINITELY take it here. Reliable, quick, and friendly service for cheap! So, I'm not too experienced in the art of sword engraving. But I was asked to get a sword engraved for a gift, so sword engraving I did. Or, rather, Alpha Engraving did. One of the best opening lines to a phone call ever: "Um, do you guys engrave swords?" After a five second pause, the guy on the other end said that yes, they could do that. "Um, could you have it ready by tomorrow night?" Yes, they could definitely do that. Score! So off I went. Alpha Engraving is kinda hard to miss, tucked right next to that gigantic parking entrance on 51st between Broadway and 8th. You can't just waltz right in, there's a buzzer to be pushed. Push I did, with my gigantic sword box balanced on my side. I was answered by a quirky gentleman with glasses. We went in, talked about what I needed and when I needed it by. He also told me, helpfully, that I would have been arrested if my sword wasn't in a box. Found this place based on all the wonderful reviews and decided to give it a try. The prices seemed high, but it was a gift for my boyfriend's dad, so I didn't mind paying more for quality. He's an avid table tennis player, so I got him a nice paddle and wanted to engrave his last name in Chinese on the handle- something nice, simple, yet personal. And you know Asian fathers love their surname! I first contacted Barry through email and he was very prompt at responding, even after hours which I appreciated. He needed the character sent in Microsoft Word format, which took me a few tries since I don't usually write in Chinese. But eventually I sent the correct one and he quoted me $55 for rush 2 day service (normal is $32/1 wk), I know the yelp site says credit cards, but it is **CASH ONLY**. And he will need a deposit so come WITH some cash initially! I don't know how he does it, because he seemed VERY busy, but it was the holidays. I came back after 4p two days later, when he told me to, and was told the "machine was starting up" and to just wait a little. I waited about 45mins, which I wasn't too happy about since I had somewhere to be, and he kept getting interrupted by customers ringing the buzzer. Finally, he came out with the finished product, and it was beautiful. Great craftsmanship & precision. It was simple, yet elegant- exactly what I wanted. So my advice would be to give a few hours cushion when picking up, and try to plan ahead so it's only $32! Also, Barry reminds me of Christopher Walken, somehow. So his demeanor may put you off as abrupt and impersonal at first, but still professional. read more

Very positive experience with Alpha Engraving. I came to have pocket watches meant as gifts for my groomsmen to be engraved. It's always hard to decide what will look best for a certain occasion and specific product, but that is where I think Alpha's wealth of experience becomes a huge asset. He was able to knowledgeably guide me through the different fonts and help me choose something that not only suited the "look" I was going for, but also the material that was to be engraved. When I picked them up a week later (standard, non-rush turn around time), I was marvelously happy with the end result, and I do admit that they looked even better than I had expected. Alpha did a great job engraving a very teeny bracelet for me. I'm used to more options for engraving and embroidery, so I really had to hunt for a place that could do what I needed. Service was prompt. Fonts are limited. Price was a little high ($20 to engrave a monogram on a baby bracelet). Staff isn't entirely interactive, but, I have zero complaints about the finished product. And, they accepted a personal check. WHAT?! I'm sure I'll be back. A couple of notes: they don't like accepting checks for $20 or less, which shouldn't have been an issue since my order was slightly more than $20. I understand though; small businesses get killed with credit card fees. Orders take a week, period. If you need a "rush order" it's nearly double in cost. read more

During the holidays, I waited two days before I was leaving for a cruise to get a card holder case engraved, so I of course had to pay a rush fee. Let this be a lesson learned - save yourself some cash and bring it in at least 4 days before you need it. The guy was really helpful and provided suggestions on font styles, placement, and size - not bad! I was also concerned about the quality since it was such a busy time of the season, but my engraving was impeccable and the recipient was very pleased. I ordered an engraved photo frame off their website. I needed it for my girlfriends birthday and called them to make sure I could get it in time. They were very flexible and even offered to swap my frame for a slightly nicer one free of charge just so that they could do it more quickly for me. When I was leaving to pick it up I realized I had misread their opening hours, but after asking them they agreed to leave my package with a nearby security guard who I could pick it up from. This was great, any other businesses would not have been anywhere near as flexible and I wouldn't have been able to get it in time. They always seemed very friendly on the phone and concerned with making sure I got what I wanted in time. Very pleased with the customer service! This place is great. For my husband's birthday, I wanted to have two beer mugs engraved with his family crest. The design is insanely intricate - I half expected them to say they couldn't do it at all. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I placed my order and requested as well as paid for expedited shipping. 5 days after placement I received an email from Barry Shain (sales manager) with questions regarding the specifics of the product I ordered. Which clearly meant not only was my item not shipped, the engraving process has not even started. I personally placed a phone call to clearly answer his inquiries about my order. Upon questioning him about the expedited shipping (because I now needed the product the next day) he became curt with me stating he was very busy and if I wanted to get the product I can go to his warehouse later that evening at 10pm to pick it up. It took three attempts to obtain my item the next day. I put a hold on the charge on my credit card and disputed the shipping costs. I turned my case over to my credit card company. I refused to pay shipping for an item I had to pickup in person. A week later Barry Shain contacted me multiple times at my work phone and used personal contact information I provided solely for the purpose of placing my order. He was rude, accusatory, and intrusive. When I told him to stop contacting me he proceeded to harass me by email. I eventually turned the case over to the BBB. My credit card confirmed he received the cost of the item in full. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any business. I will not recommend alpha engraving to anyone. read more

I was really pleased with the service, speed and quality from Alpha Printing. I had a funny request -- to get a box lid embossed on short notice (hard cardboard w/ linen finish lid). While I ideally wanted a gold leaf finish, it turns out that its hard to find gold leaf embossers (and very $$) in NYC. So I settled for a laser engraving which Alpha did perfectly. Not only am I so pleased with the final product, but I am even more impressed with the superb customer service. Barry worked with me for 1 hour and tried everything to get my specific, non-standard font from my Mac onto his PC so that it would be compatible to his engraving machine. We finally reached a solution - only after an hour of his trying - and he was perfectly helpful and patient throughout the whole process. The worse ever! I shipped my product to them in advance of my board meeting. It was a gift we were giving to a new board member. I communicated with Barry via the phone and email. After waiting about a week with no back I called Barry. He advised that my product was finished and ready to be picked up. That was on July 20th. On July 28th I went to the store to pick up my product that was a simple laser name engraving. The woman at the front of the store called for Barry. After waiting about 20 minutes he comes upstairs and says tells me it is not finished. That he thought it was but that it was left by the laser machine and forgotten about! He gave me a half-hearted apology with a shrug of the shoulders and told me I would need to come back. I told him I needed this for my Board meeting on Tuesday and that I was flying out the next morning. The woman at the counter offered to stay late (as she was about to head out) but he told her No! I stayed calm even though inside I was boiling. I was left with no option but to take my item and leave. I went to my board meeting and apologized for not having it and told them I would follow-up and ship it to the board member. Not the end of the world but when you have an expectation and you do your part (I sent it to him 2 weeks in advance!) and the merchant just does not give a rat's behind worth that he totally messed up your plans it just REALLY SUCKS! Be ware that you will have to babysit them in order to make sure you get your finished product! read more

My company had to get copper engraved by the end of the day - not an easy task - and all other engravers we contacted wouldn't be able to do a quality deep engraving in such a fast turnaround time or they couldn't work with copper period. I'm VERY surprised by all the positive reviews on customer service here, as mine has been utter CRAP so far. I ordered an engraved name tag for work. I called to place the order instead of doing it online, since Alpha has some sort of special deal with my company, and the conversation went like this: "Hi, could I place an order for my name tag for [company] please? "No, you may NOT do that over the phone! Send us an e-mail." I was really taken aback at how outright RUDE and DEMEANING the man (Barry, I believe is his name) was to me, as if merely asking to place a phone order was idiotic and offensive to him. He was about to hang up, and I had to ask him to give me the e-mail address and the specifics of how to place the order through e-mail. You'd think, for a small shop that does a lot of business, he'd want his customers to place their orders correctly the first time. He hung up on me quickly. He told me my tag would be ready by today (i placed the order on Monday...seems like a lot of time to make a tag engraved with four letters, but what do I know about engraving), and I came to pick it up. It turns out he had given my tag to someone else from my company by mistake. To his credit, he offered me an unclaimed name tag with a different name on it while I had to wait over the weekend for a replacement, but when he saw that I had already laid out my cash payment on the counter, he made a move to scoop it up. I said no, that I felt more comfortable paying once I'd actually received the correct tag. Then he got angry at me, demanding a deposit for my tag as insurance against others in the past who have placed orders, only to never pick them up (apparently, my coming into the shop today wasn't proof enough that I actually wanted my tag). He never asked for a deposit in my initial order, and I told him as much, but he said since I was there in person right now, the courtesy of not charging a deposit through e-mail was no longer on the table. WTF?? Being the non-confrontational pussy that I am, I gave him $3 as a deposit and left, angry at myself for not holding my ground. Why did I give a man money for screwing up my order? (read my review of the video editing store in Long Beach, you'll see I do this a lot) Anyway, all this to say, Barry has been nothing but rude to me since the beginning, and while the quality of his work seems very good, his customer service is abysmal. read more
