I brought in 4 Tiffany wine glasses to have engraved and was extremely disappointed with the outcome. Although I was warned there might be small fragments from the engraving, I was assured the work could be done. If the glasses were too thin to engrave safely, the job should never have been accepted. After engraving, the glasses had visible cracks, and when I went to gently hand wash them, they completely shattered. Not only did I lose 4 Tiffany wine glasses, but I also paid $120 for this service. Very upset with the lack of responsibility and poor customer service. read more

The reviews here seem divided into low ratings by people who take issue with prices and personalities, and high ratings by those who acknowledge that there was something priceless that had to be done, and that this place got it done. Last year, I connected with someone over identity stuff to the extent that I commissioned a graphic artist to create a Korean-style line illustration with animal imagery, symbols of the Joseon era's Navy, and a Korean , four Korean syllables derived from Chinese characters (since Chinese is Asia's Latin). I chose "," literally, "Eight Directions Beauty," meaning jack/jane-of-all-trades. The illustrator delivered, then got her buddy to render the image into a vector file (.eps). Meanwhile I'd been going back and forth with a nameless person behind an email account after ruling out other places that couldn't do what I proposed or couldn't do it within the time frame I needed. Most places can engrave anything for $40 if you have a vector file for their computerized laser cutters. The catch is that you have to be carving on a flat, metal surface, pretty much, and not want the engraving filled. My goal was to carve this one-of-a-kind image onto an expensive A.F. Mason Pearson hairbrush (I didn't get the hype either until I tried one - now it's going in my hypothetical "hope chest"). The brush back has the dark sheen of enameled mahogany but feels kind of like plastic, only it's not plastic, but hard pressed vegetable matter, all organic. And it's slightly convex. Since the material is a dark color, I not only want it carved up properly, I want the design to be filled in with gold paint so it pops. Now, I'd found the one joint that could do all this on rush for $100. Taking a liberal lunch break, I rode the A train from my workplace in Washington Heights down to Columbus Circle, then walked east on West 58th. Now, I'm ducking under scaffolding, going through wooden diversion mazes set up by construction companies but can still see the high quality facades of the caliber of old school buildings that they just don't make anymore. Before or after the neighboring liquor store, I make my entrance. Inside, a guy with a Michael Keatonish vibe stands at a computer behind the counter. Somehow, I know that he was the writer of the emails. The small space, ringed with engraved plaques, trophies, crystals, and other fineries commemorating occasions of the NBA, UN and NYPD, is occupied by two black gentlemen. I don't want to call them elders, but I suppose they are. They are speaking in animated ways, calling the dude behind the counter Barry. Barry looks between them and says, "I'll be right with you, miss." I'm already pleased to be called miss, not ma'am. At first, it seems there's antagonism between the men until I realize that it's animation and familiarity that I'm hearing. What the fellows want pertains to basketball, and sounds important. I start assuming that the men are famous - this is exactly the kind of quiet place where legends would do business. On their way out, one of the customers catches my eye and points, "THIS is the man right here. You've come to the right spot. Barry will get it DONE." When I step up to bat, Barry inspects the precious brush and nods pensively but reassuringly. I ask to see the vector file that I've sent him. When he brings it up on the computer, I discover that the Korean characters are faded in some spots, a fault of the conversion. I ask myself for a second if I can just accept this - maybe the flaw will give the final product a charming antique effect. But I decide NO. Barry's kind of throwing his hands up, going, "I don't know, miss, this is what you gave me." But he lets me get on the computer and mess with the software and waits as I email the Canadian artist off my phone, and failing that, email the characters in Word to Barry. He opens the email, and grumbles as I hover anxiously over him, but does everything I desperately need to restore the text. I have the option of putting like 20% down in cash but pay in full. Two days later, I head back there. The A-train tries its damndest to dick me over as I sweat bullets, trying to arrive by 6 p.m. - I call the place from between stops and Barry's colleagues promise me they won't leave. Feeling ready to crap my pants, I run up to the door at 6:07 and two guys are calmly standing there. Barry's up in back somewhere. With trembling hands I open the brush, which has been placed in its original cardboard container. It. Is. Perfect. The acrylic gold fill looks like actual gold, and the pressed vegetable like shined wood. It looks like it belongs to Indiana Jones. "How..." I begin... "Yeah," say the guys (please forgive me for forgetting your names after I asked). "It wasn't a level surface, so Barry had to make special calculations." The recipient doesn't even deserve this gift. I make a mental note to get this done for my own damn brush next time, and do. read more

Of all things, I needed a 3 ft ax engraved. Spoke to a few other engraving shops before reaching out to Apple. No one else was willing to do it, which made me a little hesitant. All my worries were quashed when I saw the final product - beautiful job on the ax, and all the accompanying paperwork that I left with them was in pristine condition. I was in need of yet, another custom job; you know, those old school but never outta style trades that are still preserved in their rarity, by some. I found it at Apple Engraving, and right here, in the big city! I purchased these green glass bottles (specialtybottle.com) which will be strictly used for medicine; the traditional medicinals, but I knew that the blank bottles just wasn't gonna do it. Well, thank God for Apple Engraving, because they did their thang. It started by my simply giving them a ring, at which time we briefly discussed the work that I wanted done. Next, I sent them a very detailed email, that described the project that I had in mind. This was followed by another very pleasant phone conversation, that pretty much sealed the deal. I knew after that second conversation, that I had only one thing left to do; deliver to them, the pieces, the business, the work. I have found my spot, and I hope you find yours. Now keep in mind, I only had this small glass etching project, but when I stepped into that little shop, and beheld some of the marvelous work that they do in that workshop, my heart leaped for joy, because I knew, I have found the ones that have preserved the trade. I wanted my name engraved inside a leather bag. I explained what I wanted in person, and then sent a pdf with an image of exactly what I wanted. I didn't get it. I don't know how I could have communicated more clearly. I could tell they were sorry, and they offered a discount on the spot, but really the money is nothing. Even if it was free I'd still be left with a poorly engraved 500 dollar bag. I'm trying not to be mad about it, but I have a lot of regret. If the engraving had been in a more visible place I'd be furious. Thank god it's on the inside. For disposable stuff like name plates and such I'm sure they're fine, but I wouldn't bring them anything nice. read more

"As good as it gets" - for real. This place is fast, efficient, meticulous, professional, friendly, and just really excellent! Can't think of any more positive adjectives, but here is what happened in more detail: At 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon, I heard about a surprise party at 1pm the following day for a promotion. Our team thought it would be nice to give our boss an engraved award, so I got in touch with Apple Engraving and asked for help. They asked me to send them an idea of a type of award that I would like and some draft of an engraving. I sent it to them by 4.30pm and the guy called me and suggested a few awards that they had in stock to save time. I looked them up online and decided to go for it, finished the logo and sent it around 7pm. To be honest, I was a total pain in the ass, asking for an additional change/adding the date very late in the process. He went ahead and did it and remained friendly. The guy was working till almost midnight, when he prompted me to send him the payment information to continue his work, and of course I had to pay a rush fee - but it was totally worth it. The following day at noon I could pick up the award and it was STUNNING! I had trusted the guy with the entire thing and I'm glad I did: he was very resourceful, suggested a few things and even pointed out options to be considerate about my budget, was very honest and transparent. It became very evident that he has been doing this for a while and is a total pro. I really absolutely loved the experience, we made our boss incredibly happy with this award and it's now displayed in his office. Would go back in a heartbeat! I have never in my life had a worse customer experience. Both Barry and the woman that work here are the most miserable, insulting people I've ever had the "pleasure" to work with. There was an error on one of the key chains I had engraved which they tried to blame on me. I politely corrected them which devolved into a series of insults. On top of that, their prices are high for lackluster work (what they didn't screw up). Go elsewhere, there are plenty of options close by. read more

Inferior experience at best. Do NOT give them your business, especially with anything of value. I had a picture frame engraved recently. The engraving work was passable, however the frame came back with multiple scratches on it. They tried to claim that the frame was scratched prior to their work and refused to make any attempt to rectify the situation. The frame was bought from a high end retailer and in secure packaging prior, so it's a very low probability that's the case. They said it just happened to be a coincident that the scratches were along the same edge as the engraving. Furthermore, they said they noticed the scratches before. Why not inform me prior to stating their work then?? read more
