I am a hairdresser by trade, and I usually don't tell barbers that, since I want them to do their thing without feeling like I'm judging every move. I just walked out of Alpha Street Barbers and couldn't be happier with my cut and shave. Kate did my hair, and took her time finding it exactly what I wanted and how I wanted to look. All the barbers were very cool and not only helped me look great, but helped me find great places to hang out while in Melbourne that aren't run of the mill. Overall, a fantastic experience. Super happy with my cut. Went in for the early morning cut (before 10am cuts are 27$, otherwise $29) Had Adam who was awesome. I described to him what I wanted which was a disconnected undercut with a two on the sides and a low 2 on the back blended to the length from the top. He totally spent the time making sure everything was perfect and even was looking at the direction of my hair growth to comment to me about my crown and my cowlick and how it might be slightly difficult to comb it in certain directions. Gangster Beats 3. Barbers who hate the world and let everyone know about it 4. Barbers who think they are straight outta Compton (more like New Zealand) 5. Ridiculous Waiting Times This is why I find myself going back and back again, I have had three different people cut my hair (English guy, Iranian guy & a female). I think the female barber perception is a matter of opinion as I have had my best fades by females at this place and other barber shops. Only recently have I started to make the change from salon (or the nearest open place) to a men's barber. The first time I came here was early on a Saturday morning and have not a had a haircut as good since (from any barber). The second time here was an ok experience, great haircut, which is the most important thing, but the conversation was slightly lacking and felt forced. All in all I cannot fault these guys seriously and have made alpha my regular barber after being between hairdressers for the last 10 years. read more

Absolutely dreadful, the worst shave I have ever had. Incredibly overpriced for a crooked and uneven job. Specifically requested the sides of my beard trimmed with scissors, and the barber ran clippers throughout the whole beard basically shaving it down to half the length. Somehow, despite using clippers, he still managed to leave incredibly uneven lengths. Edges were shaved with a cutthroat razor, and all were incredibly uneven. It might sound petty, but when you have one job and you screw it up this royally there is no excuses. Ruined my hair , didn't do what I asked for. Growing my hair at the top so requested him to just Fade the sides and do not touch the top. Well , He decided to blend it . When complaint i was told that this is how its done. Well which part of im growing the top do not touch do you not understand. Its my hair i make the decision on how i want it. At the tail end of a 6 week vacation from San Francisco, it was time to clean up before heading back to work. And you can't do that without a good haircut. Some Google-fu and Yelp-hunting revealed a choice of a few places. The most consistently glowing reviews pointed to Alpha Barbers, and specifically Adam and Kate. Walking in at about 11am, I left it to chance to see which of the two masters would be available first. I got Adam and he didn't disappoint. A 3 minute conversation and showing some glamor shots from some work head shots, and we we got going. I've been getting my hair cut by the same barber now for 2+ years and he does a great job. Adam in his first shot at my head, did about 10% better than my regular guy. The key difference was in the finishing scissor touches. Couldn't be happier with my cut and will be recommending Adam at every opportunity! read more

Had a great experience here. The haircut was excellent, and it was good value at $27. We just moved to Melbourne, and I thought I'd check this place out based on the other reviews. Kate did not disappoint. She was very easy going and happy to chat; she knew what cut would be best for me, and also gave some valuable info on what product would suit my hair as well. Also liked the use of the straight razor to trim the hair on the back of the neck. Might give the full face shave a shot next time. read more

This barbers usually gives a good haircut for the reasonable price of $25. The barbers are always really friendly and the service is fast. They also offer very reasonable prices on products, as well as free extras such as close cut hand razor on the neck and eye brows tidy up. Usually they give a good haircut, except for today when this total muppet gave me a terrible haircut. I have never seen this guy before so hopefully he won't last long, because usually they are good. This haircut made them drop a star though. read more

My partner visits alpha barbers @ melbourne central on a regular basis! Not only is it a cool and calm environment - no matter how many people they have waiting - all staff work efficiently and clients are in and out in no time.....with great hair cuts! the staff are friendly and polite and no cut is too hard. If the wait is too long they will always recommend you to visit their other store in hardware lane which is a little quieter, but not as many staff on. Both shops are great! Great staff, great cuts! great face shaves! My only suggestion is that they open up another store and cut womens hair - no appointment necessary. read more

Two words: female barbers. The guy who runs the place gives a wicked shave and sorted me out for Movember brilliantly, but don't let the women near you with a razor unless you think a barber's job is to clip a few weeks' growth down to nothing and send you away with instructions to grow it back the way you like. Depents on what kinda hairstyle you got, but i asked for a undercut fade with the sides going from clipsize 0.5 to 2 and my hair on top fade with the sides, but it doesnt fade at all. My hair just falls over the sides and now i look like a pidgeotto. I miss my barber back home :( read more

I was really happy with this Barbershop when I got my haircut here today, the Shop had a great vibe to it, the barbers not rushed to get you in and out making sure that you got the cut you wanted with a friendly chat and great advice.......
