Because it is community acupuncture, this means multiple people are treated in a large room while lying in very comfy recliners. White noise is played and it's very quiet in general, so you can rest undisturbed during your treatment. I go regularly at home in Baltimore to a community acupuncture clinic, and I have to say that I really wish Portsmouth Community Acupuncture was in MY city instead! It was a fantastic experience. Since probably a lot of you have never tried acupuncture, here's how the whole thing went: I filled out extensive forms detailing my health history and complaints -- for me, my biggest concerns are/were depression and anxiety, migraines, and a sprained ankle. Emily sat with me to discuss all of these in detail before the session and asked lots of questions, then we went into the poking room. The space is beautiful and relaxing -- a vaulted ceiling, open space, recliners arranged in a large circle. They tip all the way back. Emily took pulses, swabbed the points of insertion and proceeded to stick me with LOTS of needles -- many more than I'm used to (the more, the better!). I was covered with blankets and left for about an hour, but I had a buzzer in case I needed her. When the needles were removed, I felt fantastic as I usually do when done. I would highly, highly recommend this place to anyone considering acupuncture. It's a very peaceful experience (one woman in the room was conked out and snoring) and can really help with a variety of conditions. Emily is attentive, genuine, and listens well to your concerns. Two pieces of advice: First, make an appointment! She does take walk-ins but the practice is very busy, at least in summer, and you may end up waiting awhile if you just show up as I did. And to get in, you go through the door that looks private next to the running store, and take the elevator up to the 4th floor.

Highly recommended! I always leave feeling better than I did when I walked in the door. Not only is…read moreEmily amazing at what she does but she is also very kind, gentle, and has a healing presence. Very affordable as well!

He set up a comprehensive, unique health plan for me (diet, supplements, exercise, and lifestyle) and I've stayed with it because I feel repaired and well- and there are no nasty side effects with this protocol! Dr. Bier always listens carefully and respects my views. He takes care of me in a holistic sense (mind, body, and spirit) and gets to the root cause of whatever ails me. Not only has he kept my blood cancer from progressing, but he has aptly addressed other health concerns such as osteoporosis, spinal alignment, and severe headaches over the last four years. All of this leaves me feeling very well! Thank you, Dr. Bier and HNNH Team!!

He is also quite frank, which may be off-putting to some but is appreciated if you want the possibly grim truth about your condition without being given false hope. However, if you are coming to him as someone who has received a fatal diagnosis, as my family member did, you will find his services dwindle as the patient does. And what I mean by that is the distinct impression that he will not be making money off of the patient after a certain point and becomes hard to reach when the going gets tough. He seems to give plenty of attention when you are still healthy enough to keep paying, but if you are terminal he tries to milk it up front. As my family member declined, he pawned us off on his staff instead of giving the direct attention he did in the beginning. But if you can afford the high cost of his care and are not terminal it's probably worth trying him out.

I had been dealing with fertility issues for the last year, and was experiencing unbearable stress and anxiety. After just one visit with Kuan I felt the tightness in my chest going away and my anxiety disappearing. After just five visits I was pregnant. :) I continue to see Kuan every week. The experience is always very calming, and restful, and balancing. The office is always impeccably clean and welcoming. They have a huge selection of books in the waiting room that you can borrow on a weekly basis. They have bottled water. They have soothing relaxation music in all the rooms. The treatment beds are clean, comfortable, and heated. Kuan himself could not be any nicer or more accommodating. He starts each visit discussing your current state and makes adjustments to your treatment as necessary. Each acupuncture session also includes an acupressure massage (which is wonderful.) You don't have to be "into" every principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi, energy meridians, etc in order to feel the effectiveness of acupuncture. In fact, I started my visits as a pretty big skeptic. But whatever Kuan does, works! He helped relieve my stress and made me feel more balanced. And most importantly: he helped me get pregnant! I'm continuing to see him once a week and I look forward to every visit. My best friend has also started going to Tai Chi Acupuncture & Wellness Center and she also loves it.
