though it was quite a ways away from where we were staying, it was well worth the bike ride! first…read morewe relaxed on the terrace with some drinks and ice cream and enjoyed the view. we watched a few other patrons thoroughly enjoying open-faced sandwiches with smoked and pickled herring. the indoor seating area looks a bit kitsch with all the nets and nautical-themed items, but still cozy. on the way out, the lady behind the counter proudly told us that the herring was smoked that day at 11. feeling recharged and anxious to eat these fishes, we picked up our order and began the trip back.
once at the house, we laid out a lovely lunch with our purchases. first we arranged a dish called sol over gudhjem, which is buttered rye bread topped with the smoked herring, an egg yolk (being the sun), a sprinkle of chives, and maybe a squeeze of lemon. the smoked flavour was not overpowering at all, and the texture of the fish was delicate. the garlic-smoked salmon and pepper-smoked salmon filets were tasty but paled in comparison to the herring. somehow i found room in my quickly filling stomach to try our last purchase, curried herring. now i am not usually a big fan of pickled herring, least of all the curried sort, but this was really something else. luckily we were able to get one that was made the same day; maybe that's why i was able to feel the crunch of the apples and pickles. i even felt a bit of spiciness, unheard of in danish cuisine! my only regret of the time i spent in bornholm is not buying a tub of this to take with me back to copenhagen.
apparently this is one of the few smokehouses left that use traditional smoking methods, and it's easy to taste in their products. i highly recommend taking the time to come out here and get some smoked herring and curried herring! if you don't, you are really missing out.
