With its dignified sandstone portico and lush woodland estate, this imposing eighteenth-century manor, also known as the 'Pub in the Park', looks like the kind of place Mr Darcy would come for a dirty weekend. From weddings to wakes, I've spent numerous family occasions here, although not on the same day as that would be a bit of a downer). Inside, the stately rooms are taken up with bars and booths although the drink selection isn't as majestically sweeping as I'd expect from such an impressive building. Just the usual lagers and Guinness? That's a bit of an anti-climax. Buck your ideas up, Allerton Hall.

The pub in the park (Allerton Hall) has had a chequered history, it must be said. Burnt down, the place was left derelict for donkeys, until some bright spark turned it into a pub. And what a lovely gaffe it is, historic and all that. It serves beer, as all good pub's should, and some pretty average food. I had a steak there and it tasted like cold reinforced boxing glove. The chips were cold too, and the tomato had been marinated, dipped and rolled in salt. Needless to say, it got sent back. Nevertheless, this is a nice spot for a beer and it has a pretty little play area. It used to look onto a very small, but very cool, animal enclosure within the park, but unfortunately that's just a fenced off area of overgrown grass and shrubbery nowadays. You get the odd squirrel, mind you. Grey ones, of course.

To be honest, I'm surprised the Rose is still open. Facing stiff competition from surrounding…read moreeateries and bars that have sprung up as the area has become more popular, it has managed to stand its ground and exist as a decent pub. Hosting pub quizzes and having wide screen TVs showing various sporting events has probably not done it any harm, but I'm fairly sure that the only thing that has kept this pub afloat really are its loyal patrons, most of whom are getting on a bit. The pub does have some good food and a nice atmosphere, and it is a nice alternative to all those showy bar/bistros that surround it. The prices for drinks are reasonable and it is no doubt a popular haunt for students who walk down from the Carnatic halls of residence.

Monday to Friday they do two meals for under a tenner so you can't really grumble. We certainly didn't but perhaps you have (quite rightly) higher standards than a first year uni student... if so, probably best to stick to the pints and watch the game on the big screen, or catch the live entertainment they have on a Saturday night if you're in the area.

The food and drinks are as you would expect, the new menu which came in late April has some excellent new dishes. The staff weren't exactly rude in here but they weren't accommodating either. It took around five minutes to get served, even though there were only around three customers at the time. The food arrived really quickly, which is a bonus if you're in a rush but sometimes it can be a little too quick if you get my drift. Also my Reggae Reggae chicken wrap was cold - unsure if it was supposed to be. I imagine it would be a bit livelier at night or in the evening, but I don't recommend it for lunches. Maybe I'll try it again another day and hope that it was just a one off.

The pub is pretty spacious with an area at the back of the pub open and covered areas to eat and drink outside. Unfortunately, I went on a day when it was a little too cold to sit outside but I could imagine it being really pleasant. I wasn't stuck for parking that was for sure, there is a lot, although I guess when it get's busy busy it could be a problem. The pub has a number of offers on including curry club, steak club and sunday club where you get a free drink. It might not sound a lot but well it makes a little difference.
