Being in our late seventies and both terminally ill ,we recently purchased what is to be our last and best home. Too old to do all of the remodeling ourselves ( I have worked in and around the building trades for over 50 years) we no longer are able to do the heavy lifting. We hired Jon Massie, owner of Benchmark Builders, to remodel master bedroom ,bath and kitchen. During the planning and waiting to start we told Jon we were planning on building a guest house on our property and ask if he would be interested. He responded sure. We told him it would be around 1200 sq. ft., modest in features and cost and gave him a photo of the style. Asked the cost of construction and his estimate was $400.00 per sq. ft.., ( 1200 sq ft x $400=$480,000.00) We went to a 2nd, prominent local, contractor for an estimate and his base cost $200.00/sq ft. We added a stone fireplace , granite counter tops, wrap around covered porch and 6 stone columns. His price was better so we contracted at nearly $300,000.00 and 40% lower cost. It was never a condition that Benchmark would have both projects. He only asked to be considered and he was. His website states that he does remodels so I ,with his knowledge, purchased tens of thousands of dollars worth of fixtures and materials for our project, notified Benchmark Builders and Jon Massie that they had been delivered. He scheduled to start the following week and said he would see us than. The following Friday he called to say he changed his mind because we were building the guest house with someone else and he was not going to do the work, he had agreed to do, knowing he could not come near matching the construction cost of the guest house. We had thought Jon and his wife were friends.

I initially contacted them to inspect and repair a fireplace at my rental that was not functioning. After their visit, the scope of work quickly expanded, and the estimate grew to over $15,000. This raised concerns for me, so I sought additional opinions from a licensed electrician and other trusted local professionals. Every single one of them expressed shock at how high the estimate was and mentioned they had never seen pricing that extreme for this type of work. Based on my experience, it felt like unnecessary issues were being identified in order to significantly increase the total cost.

I told him I was ready to pull the trigger on the driveway. He was getting more irritated on the phone. He said the rain was causing delays and he couldn't schedule anything but it would probably be 6 weeks. Okay, that's fair. Four weeks go by. I email to schedule. Complete silence now. No email estimate. No more calls. No emails. Another email. Nothing. I'm looking into Austin at Sugar Bear now. I've lost two months into my home build. Because we live in an HOA, we needed someone we could trust to mow the lawn while we were still hundreds of miles away, and after using Yelp's project quote feature and receiving multiple estimates, The Mowing Magician immediately stood out. What impressed us first was the responsiveness, attention to detail, and overall value. Our property is 1.25 acres with a large sloped front lawn, plus a steep hill beyond a retaining wall in the backyard. To make things even trickier, the house had sat vacant for over 200 days, so there was significant overgrowth - especially in the steep backyard area (see before/after photos). From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. He fit us into his schedule the same week we reached out, proactively confirmed the appointment the day before, showed up exactly when promised, and communicated thoughtfully throughout the process. Since we weren't there in person, it meant so much that he took photos, asked questions whenever he needed clarity, and sent before/after photos so we could see the results ourselves. When you're trusting someone with your property from out of state, details and follow-through matter and The Mowing Magician absolutely delivered. Reliable, communicative, professional, and easy to work with. We would absolutely use him again and highly recommend him to anyone needing lawn care.
