Allegro has better hours than most of the shops in the Portland metro area, so I made an appointment with Craig to see some violins. The shop is right in their house, and while I think they prefer appointments, I believe you could also just stop in. Craig showed me two different violins--entry level and mid level. I went with the mid-level and will be doing a rent to own. His prices are good and the instruments beautiful. He tuned it for me, had me try it out, and gave me some options for buying rosin and the shoulder pad. He also showed me an app, pano, which you can use to tune the violin on your own. Pretty cool. I would highly recommend Allegro and Craig for your string instruments.

I own a traditional, American made solid body Strat that I've enjoyed playing for years, plus an amazing acoustic Martin guitar that I love playing unplugged. Called around and Portland Music Company had what I was looking for. We may the trip in from McMinnville. The salesman (or manager?) remembered me from the phone call and had several choices set aside and acoustic amps set up. He helped me home in on what I wanted and added no pressure to purchase. I played several different acoustic Strats on several different amps for the better part of an hour. The salesman was super helpful answering all of my questions. I decided to go for it and still love this guitar today, more than a year later. (I wrote most of this review right after I purchased, but the review got stuck in draft status, so I'm just now posting).

I've never been so insulted. These clowns must have assumed they were stolen. "Where'd you get them? Why are you selling?..." Hey pal, I have multiple instruments and these were two I almost never play (as if it's any of their business). They claimed there were problems with both and weren't interested. Now, I have done business with them multiple times, but they can kiss this customer goodbye! I'm not a thief, but these guys are jerks. To prove these were from my personal collection, I've included a picture of my remaining guitars. I ended up gifting the guitars to my niece.

I didn't like it and tried to return it a few weeks later. What I wasn't told was that I'd only get $50 as in store credit if the box was damaged (just the box, not the actual product itself). The worst part was the guy looked up the resell price on a used version and it came to about $80, but he then took 35% off even though it's a return. I then wanted to buy an amp (What I originally wanted before I was talked into something else) and asked for something around the $150 mark. He then tried to talk me into an amp without telling me the price. I had to firmly ask what the price was twice before he told me it's $300. Even though I was visibly upset from losing $100 from a product I bought from them because the box was damaged. I finally got him to show me exactly what I wanted. If you go here, know exactly what you want and be firm about it so you're not talked into getting something you don't want that costs more money. Also know that the boxes their products are in are worth $100 so you can't return a perfect condition product, within their return window, if the box is damaged.

Owned first in our family by accomplished musicians and piano teachers and now suffering through those beginning scales and first piano pieces ("Mary Had a Little Lamb" has been played about a bazillion times in our home this year). The piano has always looked lovely in our home, but looks can be deceiving. Steinway pianos of that era have some issues. So I wasn't at all surprised that some serious renovation and reconditioning is recommended at this point. Our current piano teacher highly recommended Denis Wilkinson and he was professional, prompt and courteous. It was easy to schedule an appointment through email (http://wilkinsonpianoservice.com/Contact.html) and he called the day of the appointment to let me know he was available earlier if that was convenient for me. Mr. Wilkinson worked at Moe's Pianos in Portland before hanging up his own shingle almost 20 years ago. And according to his website, he is the world's only manufacturer of replacement block valves for Aeolian player pianos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolian_Company). Even though a serious reconditioning and replacement is recommended, that more expensive option was not pushed on us. And after we discussed the piano's current use and life, we were given some other reasonably priced options. I really appreciate when you feel you can trust a professional's option because they aren't pushing you (or guilting you) into services that are beyond your comfort level or need. That alone is worth my continued business.
