Yes, their name is very informative. When my friend brought me to the EWSD it was a surprise, and I had no idea what we would be doing until I saw the sign. Smart move on his part, as it was too late for me to back out. Atop Oregon Public House, we head up the stairs and enter The Village Ballroom, a rustic and cute spot that is the perfect venue for a hoedown! Knowing that I would need some liquid courage, I went straight to the bar. OPH drafts were $5 each, and they had affordable wine and beer options. Radlers were only $3, people! That's just crazy! Lasting from 7-9pm, we got there at the very beginning and the crowd was sparse, and had a lot of young children. It was adorable, and I enjoyed the added benefit of being almost guaranteed to not be the worst dancer on the floor. The caller for the night (Marta King) walked the crowd through the very basics, and soon the band (Missouri Turnaround) started up. For the next two hours, we square danced our hearts out! As the evening progressed the ballroom filled up. The kids disappeared and were replaced by seemingly everybody who had ever been an extra on Portlandia. Square Dancing is hip, ya'll. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of types of people, but I was shocked at how young and cool the crowd was. This isn't your grandpa's square dance, but your grandpa would totally be welcome to join. As the evening progressed, so did the dances and soon I was lost. But that was also perfectly OK! What I really loved was that everybody was so genuine in their enjoyment. Even though we were TERRIBLE and basically just bumping into each other the whole time, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. This is some good times people, even if I myself didn't believe it at first. There's a $7 recommended donation to cover the costs, though it's sliding if you can't afford that. If you can afford more, you should consider giving it. This is a really unique opportunity in Portland, and I'm glad to have discovered it.

I tried to avoid coming to "Keep Portland Weird" because I'd heard it is overrated since it's just…read morea wall in a parking lot, but honestly, I just couldn't resist not checking it out. FOMO, here :) It's basically just that phrase (haha) on its own without any fancy graphics, but I wanted to share my reviews and be part of the Yelp community. So, I added a little twist by including a collage of interesting trash bins. I guess this is one way to keep Portland clean, too. I have never seen so many trash cans throughout the city. Hahahah :)) Classic tourist trap move, but honestly, you cannot be in Portland without acknowledging this area.

The Alphabet district is an excellent place to visit while in Portland. This area is filled with…read moreshops, restaurants, and beautiful homes. The architecture is absolutely stunning and is mainly comprised of older homes that have been well maintained and newly restored. It's a great place to take a leisurely stroll while enjoying the beautiful views of the city. This district is also home to the ever so famous Salt & Straw Creamery. You cannot visit this part of town without experiencing a scoop of their amazing ice cream! There are tons of restaurants to choose from and the streets are filled with the most adorable mom and pop and boutique style stores. Parking on the street is tough, but there are several parking garages around the area that charge a nominal fee. You might find yourself walking up and down some of the Portland hills as you pass through. Many of the streets are lined by beautiful trees and bright foliage. If you're visiting Portland and are looking for fun things to do, I would highly recommend a visit to the Alphabet district.

This venue has a great dance floor, excellent sound system, affordable cocktails & food, a fun ambiance and friendly staff. It won't stay Portland's best kept secret for live music and dancing for long! Check their website for upcoming shows, they are just getting started with a rotating calendar of events and once you make the effort to stay informed you'll be glad to did. The great Curtis Salgado plays on Nov 13!! I saw him there last month and the place was nearly empty.

I really like Ink & Peat gift shop. So many fun items like warm and comfy throws, jewelry, chocolates, garden items, perfume. Hard to visit without a purchase! For those looking for adult beverages day and night, there are lots of pubs, bars and music venues. This street really comes alive in the summer with the Mississippi Street Festival, typically held on a Saturday, mid July. Definitely do a search and put the date in your calendar. The street is lined with vendors selling food, jewelry, handmade items and crafts. When it came time to book a DJ for my own wedding, I researched all over the Willamette Valley. What I found was that very few DJ's listed all of their packages, along with price range, on their websites. This frustrated me, because a big part of weddings is staying within budget. So I started calling and emailing around, and I found that once I had contacted most places, I got weekly, even daily emails trying to solicit my business!! Annoying!! And most of them had prices out of my range (nearing a grand for 3 hours of reception DJ'ing.) So I remembered my cousin's wedding and I asked her "Who the heck was that??" I tracked down the website, and lo and behold, he actually listed his prices along with the packages!! Amazing!! Even though I am paying a little more to have the owner as my DJ, it is still well below the cost of what I was finding elsewhere. Not only that, he has been incredibly open, friendly, and responsive. What I observed at my cousin's wedding is that not only does he have a great system with great sound quality and a great selection of music, he REALLY helped guide the party along. (I mean, I could rent a good sound system and have my brother play a mix of music I like, right? What you want from a DJ is keeping the flow in the party. And he is among the best I have seen!!) I will have more feedback after the wedding, but for now, I just wanted to throw some huge kudos his way!! Addendum 10/5/13: With less than 2 weeks to go until the big day, Kevin worked with my dad and I on our father-daughter dance song to make us an awesome medley of songs--and within 24 hours gave us a sample mix so we could practice at the last minute after we changed our minds. He was completely gracious about it. During the reception, he not only played a great mix of music with all of the songs I requested, he kept the party moving along at a lively pace, and was was very easy to work with in terms of us coming to him and saying "We're losing people, let's do such-and-such now!" HIGHLY recommend.

From many email convos over the 12 months from when we booked them to when the actual wedding event was he was always quick to respond. Especially when about 2-3 days before the wedding I decided to change the song our pianist was going to play for the wedding procession. And when I asked for what I thought was maybe a little out there he always responded with a casual response in that they were happy to try to make it happen....and they did! On the day of they were amazing and a major talking point at the morning after brunch. We had a small but rowdy group and Hans and the Wanted just went with the energy we were putting out. I am so happy we stumbled across this band. The entertainment for our wedding was one of the most important things for us and WOW did they deliver. I would recommend Hans and the Wanted to anyone looking to have great, fun, professional musicians at their event. We love you!
