If the sole of your shoe isn't leather then it isn't a leather shoe. I don't care what your school uniform used to be or what anyone else told you. A leather upper does not make a leather shoe. Unfortunately the idea of grotesque black slipons has become so widespread that that's what people think of when asked to wear black shoes. But dangit, that isn't it. My pet peeves for this crime of fashion aside, Manila has been slow to improve its shoe scene. While we've seen the growing list of international brands in the city, there still aren't many quality leather shoe retailers around. One of the most striking omissions has to be Allen Edmonds; only Rustan's in Glorietta seems to regularly stock the brand. And how can this be!? AE is the go-to men's fashion leather shoe because of its fair price to quality ratio. They are still made in the USA and can be resoled as long as you take care of them, though the list price of at least P15k might scare some. Then you realize that Cole Haans sell for just as much, and wonder why you'd ever spend that much for a dressed up rubber shoe. Unfortunately Rustan's has a very limited selection--mostly Park Aves and 5th Aves--which I hope they expand soon. read more
