I love this entire area and the museum is a gem. I think that they have some permenant exhibits and then rotate other items out, not really sure. But while we were there we saw some "sacred letters" and some other I guess what you would call modern artifacts? The entire staff was friendly and knowledgable and we must have come at a great time of the day becuase even though it seemed like the streets were bustling, the museum was not too crowded. One of the benefits of visiting lots of museums is that you develop a nice little routine. Some steps necessary, others mere symptoms of OCD. No need to delve into the OCD here but I will share a few of the more useful steps. 1. My most importan tip, VISIT the website of the museum, close to the time and day of your trip. In this case - http://www.yumuseum.org. This will help you to avoid awkward situations like standing helplessly outside of the closed museum and watching all the pretty people inside drinking wine and having fun for a PRIVATE event. It will also remind you of important nuggets like when the museum offers free or discounted admission. Yeshiva University Museum happens to free on Mondays. 2. Stalk the museum on social media (Twitter @yumuseum, Instagram @yumuseum, FB https://www.facebook.com/YeshivaUniversityMuseum) This will give you a sense of the more popular and selfie worthy exhibits to either prioritize or avoid based on your preferences. The museum was cool, quiet and virtually empty when I visited, leaving me free to peruse the gorgeous photos of the highly-lauded Borscht Belt exhibit, at my leisure. 3. Ask the museum staff for their recommendations. Even with all my research, I didn't realize that the building for the Yeshiva University Museum (The Center for Jewish History) actually housed four additional partner institutions, the American Jewish Historical Society, the American Sephardi Federation, the Leo Baeck Institute, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. And while the Yeshiva University Museum gallery was the only exhibit actually open at the time of my visit, the helpful front desk staff gave me the inside scoop on an upcoming event where I could be one of the pretty people on the inside and not on the outside, staring in.

Fete Paradiso was my perfect introduction to Governors Island. My family and I spent a Sunday…read moreafternoon exploring the island and riding vintage Parisian carousels and carnival rides. I especially enjoyed the Velocipedes, which was introduced in the late 1800's as a way to help the bicycle, a new invention at the time, gain popularity. It was so fun to actually have to pedal the ride! I also loved the carousel with the ballerina seat, which was the oldest ride at Fete Paradiso dating back to 1850. Throughout the day we listened to music in the transformed bumper car pavilion beer garden (from 1900), admired the antique pipe organ, and even watched a sword swallower (I still do not understand how he did it!). It was quite a magical New York City Sunday. If you are in the New York City area and want to check out Fete Paradiso, go now! It closes for the season on September 29th.

It was something I had on my list to check out. Then, I had an opportunity, a few weeks back, to go with an organized grop. All I can say is that my answer was a huge YES. The photos I had seen were so cool and I was awe-inspired by the thought of seeing old carrousel pieces dating back to such an earlier time. The entire event is awesome. The people working the rides are dressed in appropriate attire from the era. The entire event has a feel of another time. Being on Governor's Island, you really lose the feeling of being in NYC. Yes, it's a short (FREE) ferry to Governor's Island, but you are really transported into another land. It's easy to lose yourself in the imagining how things were in an earlier time. Just a quick tip regarding the concessions. Concessions within the "Fête Paradiso" area are way over-priced. If you aren't willing to wander away a bit, you'll pay premium prices. If you are willing to cross over to the food area, there are dedicated concession areas and food trucks with very yummy, diverse options. I encourage you to be adventurous and find better, cheaper options. Re toilets, non-porta-a-poty options are located near the Manhattan ferry landing. These things will become of increasing significance as the length of your visit increases!

My first time to The Painting Center left me quite impressed considering they are but a small…read morenon-profit group of only like 15 artists. I attended their exhibition on Tibor Freund, called "Light, Time and Motion: The Paintings of Tibor Freund" which ran from Jan2-26, 2008. The painting center had worked with Freund right before his death to collect the pieces for the show and gather info - and they did a great job. I went with a group of like ten people - most galleries shudder when they see that many come in - but the guy at The Painting Center actually came out and welcomed us, gave us a little rundown on the artist and some tidbits about his work & the style he produced, and gave us all a couple free books and catalogs of sorts before we left. He was an outstanding host and welcomed us all back - which I will be sure to take him up on! He also said they are always needing helpers at the gallery for various tasks and to help put up shows, so if any art students out there need an internship, drop in or email them (jot down the address, their sign is easy to miss)! I heard about the Greenpoint Gallery through my fiancé's friend, but I wonder why I hadn't heard of…read morethis gallery until only last year! Every month, they hold open calls for artists, and if you're selected, you could win a solo show and some cash. I jumped at this opportunity, and with that, I was able to do a solo show here last year. It was a wonderful time and experience. I would recommend doing any group show and solo show here. I'd do a solo show here again in a heart beat. Greenpoint Gallery is a very unassuming gallery. You'll get the opportunity to network and meet fun people and artists. Many works of art will be on display. Additionally, live music is occasionally played. There is a bar that also contributes to the gallery. The owner is an extremely cool person. I'm incredibly grateful for my solo show at Greenpoint Gallery. If you can, definitely check this gallery out.

In season (Sept- June); GPG is my first stop every Friday to kick off my weekend and recharge my creative and social flow. It reminds me of Berlin, Tokyo and Amsterdam BC its the opposite of NYC stuffy snob that's standard for gallery settings. It actually feels like nearly anything goes which to me is V relaxing and quite fun! This is how NYC use to be where smoking was allowed indoors everywhere. They are BYO and 420 friendly which I really enjoy! I've brought dates and friends there and everyone has always had fun and often walked away with cool art they could afford. Its always a fun experience seeing so many artists and I know its awesome for emerging artists to show off new works and network with other artists. I met the staff over the years and they are always kind and friendly. If your lucky; you may see a couple of white wolf dogs! I buy art there as often as I can BC the prices are affordable and I love to support emerging artists. I can care less that the art is exposed to smoke for less than a day. They don't take any sales commissions off the art sold either hence the art being affordable. Who does that!? They do! I know the Gallery is very community minded and helps young artists a lot by giving them a place to jam (music) on Wednesdays and show Artworks, perform and even create Art in the shared affordable art space. I guess if you found smoking unacceptable this place may not be your cup of tea, and there's no elevator or handicap access unfortunately. This is a must see if the parameters align with your being especially if you are a young art collector! 25-50+ new artists EVERY FRIDAY! Enjoy!

I have been in I B Cohen's store many times and I really love it. I have bought a few antiques…read morehere such as a crystal ball, statues and a pair of antique Empire style chairs as I am an antique collector. I live in the Bronx but come out to New Rochelle just to walk around and browse the stores. I B Cohen is one of my favorite stores here. I have been told by the people working in the store that is will be closing up some time this year because the family who owns it wants to move down and relocate in Florida. I hope that a new owner will come and take over so that it stays open. I was also told that the building the store is in was sold and that the new owner wants to demolish it and put a high rise here. I do not want to see that happen. If the building has been sold I hope that the new owner will keep the building and have another business move in like a restaurant or a hair dresser etc. I do not want to see the building get torn down as we need to save our historic heritage and keep the historic charm of this nice city. Too much beautiful architecture has been destroyed in the New York area. I hope that people read this review and will make every effort to save this building if not the business. We want Main Street to keep its historic charm. The name of this gallery is so hard for me to remember! I'm always like "McInnes & Nash... Mitchum…read more& Guinness... what's it called?!" So, too many words in the title but other than that this is a solid gallery. Last time I went they had an exhibition of paintings by Keltie Ferris. There was a lot of buzz around this artist but I had never seen her works in person so I was excited to go. I was not disappointed! They are very vivid abstractions, where layers of color and brush stylings play against each other in an electrifying dance. I thought for sure that the bottom layer of these paintings had been printed on with an inkjet, but when I asked a gallery attendant she said, no, the whole thing was painted by the artist by hand.. if I remember correctly, she used a spray nozzle and/or a sponge, which had the effect of muting the movement of her hand. I totally fell for it! Wonderful. The space itself is big, airy, and bright, with lots of room to move around and choose your own path for studying the works on display. One of the women at the front desk is always very friendly and eager to answer whatever questions I might have. The other one is not so gregarious. Fair enough. It's not like I'm actually a client who is there to buy something.

It's supposed to replace the Siren Music Festival, which I've sadly never had the chance to experience. Sadly, I can't make the comparison. Well, maybe it's good that I can't make the comparison. I wasn't familiar with any of the bands and I don't think I got very excited by anything I heard, but I still had a great time. Live music rocks, period! All those that were familiar with the musical lineup, they made it even more fun for me as I fed off their energy. I'd hate to categorize the bands into genres, but if I had to, I guess there was a nice menu of indie rock, indie pop, indie punk, folk, and experimental. The Main Stage was right on Pier 17 and that's where the bands played. What a perfect venue! On a hot summer's day, that sea breeze made things tolerable. There was also an Indoor Lounge located on 210 Front Street, where they had rotating DJs and a karaoke section where you get to spin-and-win if you sing a song. That might have been my favorite part. I'm a newbie to this area, so I'm not sure what this building is usually used for, but it was a great gallery-like space. The Only Cons: There weren't very many food vendors, only those hot dog and kebab carts that you see EVERYWHERE in NYC. (Back in San Francisco, I looked forward to festival food vendors who only came out for festivals. Festival food was part of the experience for me.) There actually weren't that many vendors out at all, just the ones that are normally there. I'm assuming it's because this festival still has room to grow. It drew a pretty thick crowd, but not once was it so crowded that I couldn't move around. Overall, it was cool and if it were to be an annual event, I'd mos def attend every year.

The 4Knots Festival is an annual music event during which independent bands play sets throughout…read morethe day. Last year (2015), 4Knots was held at Pier 84 in Hudson River Park and you needed tickets. I went to this show because of Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks and Super Furry Animals. There were food trucks and bars on the pier, which were pretty good. Overall, the event at Pier 84 was cool, but I like that 4Knots is back at the South Street Seaport and FREE again. Also, getting the South Street Seaport is easier than Hudson River Park. Next summer, I recommend you check it out!
