Hands-down, this is the worst driving school ever. My daughter used them about two years ago and it…read morewas terrible. On the flipside, my younger son just completed drivers Ed at another drivers Ed facility. The experiences were night and day. The River City Driving School owner, Palmer, had my child drive him to his house while she waited in the car for over 30 minutes for him, he had her to drive him to Starbucks and other errands, and Palmer sat on the phone or slept while she was behind the wheel. Their communication sucked, and their instruction was even worse. It makes me sick that I paid money for my daughter to go there. On a positive note, we found an amazing driving school for my younger son and had a completely different (wonderful) experience. I have last heard that Palmer is in jail and River City Driving School closed. while I hate that he's gone through so much in life, he needs to know the weight of responsibility that comes with licensing teenage drivers. I am glad he is out of business and hope he does not reopen because it was a terrible experience.

Now that the state has made a specific teen…read more"behind the wheel" class- that is very often not offered in school- a requirement for a new license, places like this are making out like bandits, literally. I paid over $200 for my daughter to take 14 sessions with the "school" and 7 were to be observation and 7 actual driving. They come and pick you up, so I thought that was great. My daughter went for her first lesson and was back in under an hour. I thought these were supposed to be two hour sessions? The second time, again she was back in less than an hour. It's a pain in general to schedule with these guys- we had one instructor who I would have to wrangle with over times and then he'd cancel and reschedule etc. Then came the real shocker. After the third or fourth outing, the instructor called me out to the car, has me sign my daughter's temporary license and announces that she is done, and that the school would send the paperwork to the DMV/court and we would receive a date for the licensing ceremony in the mail. But that was it- she was now a licensed driver. Anyway, this "school" did not teach her to drive, to park, did not have her drive on the highway, did not teach her about traffic situations, and from what my daughter told me, she nearly wrecked the car on the way back to the house from the last "lesson" and the guy still passed her! I ended up teaching her to drive myself. They do not care- they just want the money. I will not repeat the stories that some of her schoolmates had about this place in regard to the time vs money scam this place seems to be running because I want to stick strictly to my own experience. The last thing that happened was that we never got the paperwork in the mail from the court. My daughters temp papers expired, and when I called the DMV they told me Friendlys had never sent in the paperwork. They had also filled in my daughter's birthdate on the papers with the birth month as "0". So I had to go back to her school, re-obtain the classroom driving test documentation, track the teacher down, have him sign the papers, take my daughter out of school and go down to the DMV to sit for an hour and fill everything out all over again. Very, very inconvenient. If the state of Virginia had not instituted this requirement, these places would not be able to run this con on people. Why are they not doing behind the wheel either through the schools or through the state. Privatizing it has made it ridiculously easy for unscrupulous places to just collect money in exchange for a signature and a piece of paper. These places don't care about safety or teaching kids to drive safely, they don't even care enough to send in the darned paperwork. All they care about is money, and how many paying students they can cram in on any given day. Think about it: the less time a kid spends in the company's car, the more time that instructor has to rack up quantity. The whole thing makes me sick. I wish I could give a "0" rating.

She then had a brief discussion about a few basic "road rules" before popping in an old video and then leaving the room; the video ended and we sat there for what seemed like 20 minutes before she returned to talk a little more and hand out a work sheet again leaving us alone; she then appeared to "pop in" another video and once that was over she announced that she had to leave and her assistant would be there for the remainder of the day (who by the way had very little knowledge about "driver education"). We were given another hand out (word search 1 of 3) and left alone again.....none of this really in my opinion really was "driver improvement" We paid $50.00 to watch outdated videos; do word search and be babysat!!!! She collected her money and when we voiced our "displeasure" to her assistant she returned to rush through some additional "road rules" to hopefully satisfy us and issue our certificates!!! If you have time to waste;don't mind sitting around doing word search games in a cold room and watching movies; and taking long lunches, then you've found your driving school!! Totally unprofessional but you will get your certificate......

Ms. Burt corrects and teaches the new drivers when they need it, but she does not yell or cause stress. Ms. Burt makes a point to teach the new drivers about defensive driving too. Ms. Burt just "gets" teenagers. She converses with them and puts them at ease and it is not an awkward or boring driving session. The car Ms. Burt used for the teaching was clean and in great condition. She has the appropriate signage on the car to alert others on the road of a new driver. It was a 4 door sedan and my daughter was very comfortable learning in that car, even though she had never driven a sedan before. It was very easy to schedule and RVA Driving Academy was very responsive. Ms. Burt worked with us via text to schedule driving times around busy a school and after school activity schedule. It was quick and easy to get on her calendar. We got all 7 sessions done in just over a week. My daughter enjoyed her time in the car with Ms. Burt and when she "graduated" from Behind The Wheel she told me a few days later that she missed not having more time driving with Ms. Burt. We had an excellent experience and I highly recommend RVA driving academy and Ms. Burt. Schedule her, you will not be disappointed!
