Bay Diagnostic - Guessing we're getting it

They took my car in and completed the service we requested more quickly and efficiently than expected. I usually dread anything involving mechanics and auto repairs. But I had such a good experience, I will return to Bay Diagnostics for routine maintenance and any other auto repair needs my family has in the future. I'm grateful.

Here's a polished and professional version of your review that keeps the details and frustration…read morewhile making it easier for others to read: Terrible experience this morning, and I drove all the way to Brooklyn for it. I called the day before and spoke with a gentleman who was very polite and helpful. I explained exactly what was wrong with my car, told him I already had the replacement parts, and mentioned there were several repairs I needed done. He told me it wouldn't be a problem and to come in the next morning. I arrived at 7:30 AM and met with the owner. I explained everything that was wrong with the vehicle and told him about my conversation from the previous day. He took my information, and everything seemed fine at first. Then he told me he doesn't go by what other employees say and that he would need to plug the car into a diagnostic machine to do his own assessment. I said okay, but then he started telling me that even if the repairs were needed, it might take time to get the parts. I reminded him that I already had all of the parts for my vehicle. That's when he informed me that he doesn't install customer-supplied parts. My question is: Why wasn't that explained to me yesterday when I specifically called ahead and told the employee I already had the parts? That information would have saved me a trip to Brooklyn. From that point on, the conversation became increasingly unpleasant. I explained that I've dealt with mechanics in the past who have tried to upsell unnecessary repairs, especially because many customers--particularly women--may not always know enough about cars to challenge a diagnosis. I wasn't asking him to guess what was wrong; I was telling him exactly what I wanted repaired and was prepared to pay for those specific repairs. Instead of listening, he became defensive and argumentative. When I mentioned that some mechanics take advantage of women, he responded by telling me he was married and had a wife. That had absolutely nothing to do with my point. I wasn't accusing him of anything personally--I was explaining why I wanted transparency and why I called ahead to confirm everything before making the trip. Ironically, the lack of communication from his own employee is exactly what caused this problem. If the shop doesn't install customer-supplied parts, that should have been clearly stated during my phone call. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone the day before was professional, respectful, and helpful. Unfortunately, my interaction with the owner was the complete opposite. His attitude, lack of customer service, and unwillingness to communicate professionally made this one of the worst experiences I've ever had with an auto repair shop. My advice: Call ahead and get every detail in writing. Make sure you understand their policies before driving out there. Based on my experience, proceed with caution.

The first two years I was bringing an older van for routine service and the occasional problem that comes with driving an old car. He was always honest and forthright and his prices were excellent. Eight years ago I bought a new car, and up until two weeks ago I never had any major issues. In fact it's a Hyundai Tucson it is a great car. This is the first time I needed a complete brake job pads and rotors. I left the station after an $800 bill, the car felt very good. I was on my way to vacation so I parked the car in front of my girlfriends house on a level grade. When I got back several days ago, and took the car back to my house, and tried to park in my driveway, which is an on a slant, I discovered the emergency brake was not working. I was upset, since this is an issue with the brakes, and should have been checked. I mediately brought the car back to the service station, The owner, who it up to that point had been very nice to me, actually just blew me off. I explained to him that is a problem with the brakes that I paid money to have fixed, that it's dangerous to drive around without an emergency break, and that I couldn't park in my own driveway. If you do a complete brake job, checking the emergency break before you release the car is a no brainer. The owner, who it up to that point had been very nice to me actually just blew me off. I was expecting him to say OK no problem I'll take a look at it right away, since adjusting the emergency brake is a 10 or 15 minute job at most. He actually had the nerve to tell me to come back in a week and he may be able to address the problem. Needless to say I will never use his services again.
