I had a glass of the wine of the moment- it was a tasty Cabernet Sauvignon that was very reasonably priced. My husband had a local beer that he thought was unimpressive, but it was his own fault- he ordered a lager, knowing he likes more flavorful beers, and it came out just meh. I got a prosciutto sandwich, and we both agreed that mine was better. I highly recommend it! Go for some wine in the afternoon, stay for the sandwiches!

Firstly, the price is exorbitantly high- 38£ + 5% service fee ends up at 45£ meal with nothing else included. The service was mediocre, you have to get up and ask for things (like sugar or the bill),but this is to be expected at a very empty location. The tea was what I found most dissatisfaction in, it was so weak!! I chose Earl Grey and then the Assam, I let the EG steep for 20!!! minutes and could barely get flavor. I'm honestly not sure how this even happens. Tried the Assam, and it tasted of watery black pepper rather than a smooth rich black tea. The sandwiches and scones were fine, uncreative but they're the best part. The dessert tier (sans a fantastic espresso craquelin choux), left much to be desired. A painfully dry cake, brownie that was identical to those sold at Taylor's, lemon pudding (served with no spoon!) and cheesecake. I left with more to be desired, or would have expected less to be paid in return. Walk a few blocks south of Parsonage, there are far better tea's in town.

I had the latter, which was delicately sauced ( butter, lemon, chives) and expertly cooked. Desserts included a superb chocolate lava cake with pistachio ice cream. Very serviceable wine list, which includes a smattering of somewhat more unusual wines.

It seems that people get drunker faster when the beer is old :) its always been very popular with young people. I myself bought single med sized bottles of a range of odd beers here all for 44p each! you just cannot beat that. as well as the out of date beers there is a fine selection of normal dated wines and brew - all still cheaper then most other mainstream places. It is located on the cowley rd opposite the medic centre.

I ordered a non alcoholic cocktail with elderflower (which is kind of the second national beverage of England ...the first being beer) and I could be forgiven for thinking that elderflower was just water. I think the bartender used an eyedropper. Oh well. I suppose that is what happens with chains that are long in the tooth. The ambiance was kind of old school and posh pub like. Chips were pretty standard fare. For dessert we tried the apple, rhubarb, and raspberry crumble (5/5), really nice sweet and tart combo. Service was very good (5/5). Overall recommended.

I had a special fondness for the bartenders here because they were always happy to strike up a conversation with us. We had lots of laughs - one night in particular, they brought me to tears making fun of what they perceived as oddities in American passports. They also helped us one night when a buddy drunkenly lost his phone in the building. They were patient and good natured, which is about all you can ask of bar staff. Again, if you're not feeling like making new friends, there's plenty of room to spread out with your own social group or even be asocial, if that's what you're wanting. It's a welcoming, fun place, and a little bit more laid back than some of the other pubs around.

Come for the history and stay for a proper pub experience. It's definitely worth the trouble of seeking this one out.
