I walked over to this restaurant after visiting the busy plaza on one of the day of the dead celebrations. The breeze was cool, we sat al fresco on the sidewalk and our server was lovely. She even gave me a free half glass of wine because they ran out of my Chardonnay!! I had the Caesar salad which was very good ( just ask for salt on the table) a delicious bread service with bruschetta tomato on the side as well as balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I had the specialty mushroom risotto and my friend had the óso bucco. It literally fell off the bone! Gave the bone to a stray dog next to us who made short work of it! My risotto was lovely which I will supplement with a big more cheese on my leftovers. We also had a bit of live entertainment with a very smooth and mellow guitar player. Alex's Pasta Bar has lovely food, well prepared in a comfortable setting...BUT they are not safe for anyone with celiac disease. I asked the server about a particular dish and she assured me it is gluten free. I asked her to please check with the chef to double check, just be sure...so she went to the kitchen to ask. She returned and assured me their risotto was indeed gluten free. It was delicious but obviously there was cross contamination of gluten because I got very sick. If one is celiac, there is no mistaking gluten poisoning. So if you don't have a problem with gluten, this is probably a safe restaurant, but if you are celiac or gluten intolerant, absolutely do not go to Alex's Pasta Bar. They're definitely on my "never again" list, especially when I've double checked to make sure a particular dish is safe, and the kitchen has been informed my meal must be prepared gluten free. read more

Wow! I was visiting friends in Lake Chapala and we ate here on my last night. I'm a New York born Italian American so I didn't expect much from an Italian restaurant in the heart of Mexico. I couldn't have been more wrong. I ordered a simple aglio olio with chicken and while a hard thing to mess up, everything from the al dente noodles, the amount of garlic to the really juicy chicken was perfection. Luckily I got to taste my friends Mushroom Risotto and it was the best Risotto I ever tasted, hands down. Next time I visit I'm going to ask if we can dine here again! I love this place. read more

Stumbled upon this little find in Ajijic while looking for a place to eat. The chic decor was definitely inviting. We were soon greeted by the owner 'Alex' himself. A charismatic man who loves people. We had a short wait as the place was full. Once seated the waiter was friendly and had basic English so it was easy to communicate. The food arrived promptly and it did not disappoint! All the pastas are made daily. Fresh products and good old fashioned recipes. In a more traditional place I would give 4 stars but in the middle of Mexico, this little chic, cool and lovely spot gets 5! read more

This was probably the best dining experience we had during our three weeks in Ajijic. The food and service were absolutely amazing. I had a pan seared sea bass fillet with a rigatoni in a mushroom cream sauce that was five star excellent! They make their pasta fresh daily and you can tell. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. My husband had a seafood pasta that was not on the menu but he asked if they could tweak it to suit his taste and they were happy to do so. It too was excellent. We also shared a delicious smoked salmon appetizer which was large enough for us to share. And then .... a piece of lemon pie to go. The presentation was unbelievable with dark chocolate drizzle, fresh flowers and whipped cream. It was unbelievably delicious. I really can't say enough about how great the food and service were. Dec 2017 We dined at Alex's Past Bar with friends the other night. We had reservations for 4 yet they had to move tables around when we arrived. The atmosphere is black and white, small and elegant simple. We had some great Cosmopolitans filled to the brim a big thing with me when getting a martini style drink, fill it to brim. They sure were good. Each couple started with the small pizza as an appetizer ( not on regular menu you have to ask for the pizza menu), it is 85 pesos and a good start . We had the margarita which is cheese and tomatoes and sauce, thin crust and very good with a funky cut. Then my husband had the chicken parmesan which was breaded lightly, a nice portion and very tender and tasty at 150 pesos. Well worth it. I had the Zoodles which is zucchini made into pasta or spaghetti shapes. You pick the sauce and I chose Bolognese. Well yummy, yummy, it was very tasty and flavorful , sauce and zoodles. Just love that word, zoodles. Another in our party had the Shrimp in Love which is Shrimp in a Pernod sauce along with risotti. It was also very tasty but they leave the tail on the shrimp and quite frankly that is so distasteful to me., though many places do it. I would get any of the dishes again as all were very good, sadly I forgot to get all the prices. We even sprung for dessert and my husband and I shared a very beautifully presented Lemon pie, with a glazed topping, fairly hard crust though and our friends had the cannoli, which apparently was tasty but not a traditional outer crust or cannoli shell. Our time was lovely and the service was very good with reasonable prices. I have to admit it was a bit on the chilly side and they have curtains to close off dining area so no clue why they did not. My only area of dislike is the location of the bathroom, sort of smack dab in the dining room corner. Surely that cannot be moved but maybe a partion put up or a hanging curtain from ceiling so when one uses bathroom and door is opened you are not faced with the water closet. The night we were there also there was no water in bathroom sink but had to be an exception as I have been there before without issue. I did forget to mention to servers about the water. All in all, we will go back and it is one of our favorite restaurants. read more

Short Story: another great meal and wonderful dining experience. Long winded version. We arrived around 4:30 or 5:00 on a Thursday in October. A few tables were occupied (including my favorite seat by the street). We were seated swiftly and warmly welcomed by both Cesar and Jose Manuel. Water was served almost instantly and we were attended to with conversation, grace and warm smiles throughout the evening. We loved charcuterie boards in the US and had found a great place near our home in Temecula, CA. When the house was up for sale, we'd often go there to pass the hours during open houses and showings and found that we could linger over a nice charcuterie board for an hour. We ordered the charcuterie board at Alex's and did linger over it for close to an hour, chatting and sipping wine (well, Gary had a martini). The meats and cheeses on the board were tasty and of good quality, but overall, I think this dish could use a little revamping. Maybe a nice bit of spicy fig jam, a few nuts, a stinky cheese, maybe a few quarters of fresh fig with some drizzle of sauce...I know TIM (this is Mexico) and I'm applying my tastes from NOB (North of Border) here, but it is my palette after all. They brought the standard bread basket (half toasted, half fresh...all fresh baked bread) with a small tomato/onion/herb salsa to create your own bruschetta knock-off. We used that bread to accompany the charcuterie selections. We shared a Caesar salad; Alex's always delivers this dish well. The portion size may have gone down a little, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just an observation. Their Caesar dressing is excellent! I ordered the octopus as my entrée. It was served with a pesto sauce and also with some heavenly guacamole. The octopus was perfectly prepared! I couldn't pick out the marinade or rub by taste, but the octopus had a mild flavor and just a tiny bit of char from those few moments on the grill. I had enough leftover for a light lunch the next day (it heated up nicely in the oven and remained the perfect texture). Texture is really important with octopus; this was tender (not the least bit chewy or mushy), so I know it was treated well prior to and during the cooking process. YUM! Since octopus has a mild flavor, the accompanying sauces and garnish are especially important. I really liked the mixture with the pesto and guacamole and would never have even thought to pair guacamole with octopus served this way. Brilliant menu item. Gary ordered the pasta with meatballs. He was not the least bit disappointed. The meatballs were good, and the pasta was perfectly prepared. The sauce with this dish is a concentrated tomato sauce. I LOVE tomatoes, so when I tasted this, it really appealed to me. Seasonings were spot on. We skipped dessert this time, but the Gorgonzola ice cream is a must try! We had it once before and it was fantastic. They have some new menu items (pictured in the photos). These include several additional tortellinis. They were completely out of the duck confit because it has been such a hit. Also a new ribeye steak on the menu. If you get a chance to enjoy a meal at Alex's, I'm pretty sure you are going to love it. It may be a little pricier than some other places, but we love the experience so much and the quality of the food is so good, that we feel the price is a great value. Believe the hype! The food was authentic the service was efficient and friendly. We showed up after a long day of traveling, we were so hungry we almost ordered the entire menu. Every single thing we had was delicious! My favorite was the shrimp bisque and the chicken Marsala. Now I'm back in the US and nothing will compare! Couldn't be more enthusiastic about this restaurant! So glad it is just down the highway from us in Ajijic and we'll be there often. The service and attentive care is excellent, as well as the FOOD! The house pâté is divine, and the PASTA is the BEST I've ever eaten, and I love pasta. Theirs is fresh made every day, and you can also take it home for cooking yourself. but why bother when Alex's chefs make incredibly delicious meals that are beautiful to behold and delicious to eat and reasonably priced. We just enjoyed a fantastic holiday meal there that cost us 1/4 of what we used to pay in Vancouver BC Canada at the fabulous Italian enclave of restaurants there. My husband and I had a stellar experience at Alex's this week. Everything was top notch. The food, the beverages, the atmosphere and the impeccable service. We started out with stuffed zucchini blossoms, laid on a bed of lightly dressed greens. They looked like five crispy cocoons, offering themselves up for our dining delight. For our entrees, I had the grouper piccata and my husband had the duck confit. In his words, "OH BABY!" Everything was prepared to perfection, portion size was perfect. All dishes and accompaniments arrived in a timely manner and the service couldn't have been better. Our server, Cezar and his lovely assistant ( my apologies that I don't know the young lady's name who took our orders served our meals, etc.), were knowledgable, poised AND Cezar took the prize for a great sense of humor and winning smile. The pastry chef, Abraham, checked in to see if his lemon tart pleased our palates. It did. His crust includes egg yolk which added to its richness. Even Alex stopped over to our table a couple of times to ensure that we were comfortable and pleased with our meals. We left Alex's with happy bellies and happy hearts! P.S. We hail from Buffalo, NY, which boasts a large Italian population and many fine restaurants featuring Italian cuisine. Alex's would hold its own among the best. read more

I visited Alex's Pasta Bar last week with a US business associate and a local Mexico Partner and it was excellent. We had a lot of fun chatting with our server about the attributes of Baja wines and the regular wine list suggestions. These people really know their food, their wines and their customers. In fact they make their own pasta - Can you believe that? -The service was great, the prices were reasonable and I really liked the fact that we were able to call ahead for a reservation. (We were entertaining after all) I had the pasta with Gorgonzola sauce and it was superb. One person had the fish special and another had a pasta dish and they were both very pleased. We even all thanked the cooks on our way out. The only thing that concerns me is that the next time I visit Ajijic Alex's will be so popular that I won't get a table.
