I had an in-office procedure with Dr. Klikoff that I will never forget. It was extremely painful and traumatic. Dr. Klikoff had the most uncaring and cold demeanor you can imagine. I experienced a true hell in her office and she never once gave me comfort, a kind word or even a smile. Her assistant apologized to me afterward. Please don't support this doctor and be sure to read the other one star reviews, as well as the ones below labeled as "not recommended". I noticed that a lot of her reviews are either 5 star or 1 star. Perhaps she has a Jekyll & Hyde personality type. Horrible experience that came close to us losing my grandson and my daughter. Dr. Klikoff came in, sat down, crossed her legs and waited while my daughter labored. Infrequently she snapped at my daughter asking her if she wanted to have the baby. When he was finally born my grandson was gray, limp and not breathing. The pediatrician eventually got him breathing and when weighed he was 10lbs. 13 oz. Klikoff had no idea how large he was, she had never measured during the pregnancy. My daughter was bleeding profusely and Klikoff looked alarmed as she frantically stitched and tried to stop the bleeding, my daughter was white from the blood loss. She spent over two weeks bedridden unable to walk unaided. Klikoff is arrogant and dangerous. I would have gotten involved in a lawsuit, now wish I had. Buyer beware. read more

Klikoff told me that she wished I didn't throw up so much. She also told me that I was drinking too much water for a pregnant woman. To top it all off, she would always tell me that she was on vacation and never helped me. Gave me medicine without testing me and now my baby will be born with defects because of those medications! read more

Dr. Klikoff has been my super hero healthcare provider over the years. She has helped me with general health issues, walked me through my journey to start a family, delivered my kids and kept up with my regular check-ups. I can have intelligent conversations with her and she's honest about what she can and can't do (and if she can't, she redirects you to where you can find help). She's quite a distance from where I live now but worth the drive. Tip: It's my experience that sometimes she runs late for her appointments but it also means that she spends as much time as she needs with each patient answering questions.. so it's worth it (and she'll do the same for you) and be prepared for it. read more

I am beyond thrilled to have Dr. Klikoff as my new obgyn. After a bad experience elsewhere with my first pregnancy, I am happy to have crossed paths with this wonderful woman. My first daugher was born through a C-Section and when I was expecting the second one I didn't anticipate that the majority of the doctors will be not willing to consider a regular vaginal delivery. I was searching for a long time and Dr Klikoff was the only OB/GYN who not only accepted me in my almost 20th week of pregnancy but also embraced the idea of the vaginal birth. I felt fully supported during the whole time of my pregnancy. When the delivery day came, she was officially still on vacation. However, she made the effort and came to the Sutter hospital late at night and made sure everything went smoothly and my second beautiful daughter was born just before 2am. read more

I have two words: Journey Talkovic. She is who my appointment was with. I haven't been to a doctor in years. I've always been in good health and never found a reason to go, but thanks to Covered California, I finally got myself some health insurance that I'm sure could come in handy one day. It took me a long time on the phone with Anthem Blue Shield trying to find a decent gynecologist through my Bronze 60 PPO plan (--whatever the heck that means). I yelped the few that were covered in my area and I felt bleak: their reviews were truly abysmal. Finally I read Dr. Klikoff's yelp reviews and I felt excited--It is so important to me to have someone with a stellar reputation of kindness to entrust with something so intimate as my gynocological wellbeing. When I called to schedule, the receptionist said the Doctor was not taking new clients, but I could see a Midwife. Knowing nothing about Midwives, I was really very disappointed, fearing that I wouldn't receive very knowledgable or qualified care. I figured, shoot--if I don't see a doctor but every 5 or more years, when I do--I want the person I see to know if there's anything I should be concerned about. The receptionist reassured me that--if the midwife were to see something of concern--they would get me in to see Dr Kickoff directly, which was a relief to me. Most importantly and presumably due to mistreatment of my body as a child, I also am very nervous and uncomfortable with these type of exams. I guess because of this, these types of doctors visits have always been not only embarrassing, but both physically painful and emotional for me as well. I had wished for so long that a practitioner would just allow the time to let my body relax into the exam. That takes a quality of patience I had come to assume I would never experience. I would give zero stars if I could. I had a terrible, hospital, birthing experience with Dr. Klikoff. Though I was feeling great, and healthy, my c-section happy doctor scared my husband and myself to think I had to be monitored due to some protein found in my urine 5 days before my son's due date. If only I had not been so, so naive. I learned from an ER nurse in Santa Cruz this is normal and this is why she, herself, decided not to have Dr. Klikoff as her doctor. Instead, she had a happy home birth with a midwife. I wish I could say the same, but instead I found myself literally in a business transaction from there on out, and plugged into Pitocin without understanding what that ride would truly be like. What had been a beautiful pregnancy, turned into an absolute nightmare birth experience. I was just telling our son, who is now about to turn 7, that I wish I could go back in time to simply tell my unfeeling doctor, that I would go home and put my feet up and relax instead of listening to her and going to the hospital too early! Dr. Klikoff extinguished my happiness. The next day I was in a stressful, hospital environment at Sutter. I didn't have anyone who really cared about me working there, and the outcome was a c-section rather than the birthing experience I should have had. I remember at one point Dr. Klikoff came in and told me I looked way to happy to be in labor yet. No warmth, no support, just ridicule. In hindsight I wish I had a mid-wife and a doula coach because that was the other sad realization that once I was plugged in at Sutter Hospital, no one was there to be my coach or advocate. It was horrendous and she of course made $30K while I suffered a botched, crooked c-section which deemed it necessary for her to rip out the staples due to a seroma, and send me home with an open wound, after having incurred an "ileus" from the c-section, and terrible edema from all the horrible Pitocin I was pumped full of. For months I had an open wound that just wouldn't heal so Dr. Klikoff burned me with silver nitrate which felt like I had been stabbed with a fiery sword. She did not even prepare me for that terrible pain or tell me what was coming. And let's not forget she went to examine me without washing her hands. I give Dr. Klikoff five stars because she is a phenomenal doctor and has you and your baby's best interest at heart. It's not often you can say that when dealing with MD's! My experience with her was with my second child. I had a home birth with my first child and unfortunately wasn't prepared (having moved during my pregnancy) for a home birth with my second. My midwife recommended Dr. Klikoff. I was not a big fan of the idea of having a hospital birth and was reluctant at first but Dr. Klikoff gave me reassurance that I would be in good hands. I began seeing Dr. Klikoff and Joan (one of the midwives) and had a relatively normal, healthy pregnancy. All that changed when I was 40 weeks pregnant and 2 days overdue. I went in to see Dr. Klikoff a week earlier for a regular check-up and against her recommendation I refused a vaginal exam. I decided it was a good time for the exam and to my unexpected surprise discovered my baby was in the breech position. "Oh crap" was the first thing that came to mind! I did not want a c-section if I could help it so we decided to try turning our baby early the next morning. I went into labor that evening! Dr. Klikoff came to our side at the hospital and tried turning our baby and even with her best attempts was unsuccessful because of my water breaking and to far into active labor. She gave me my options which were a breech delivery or a C-section and let me decide. I figured why not try for a natural birth. Dr. Klikoff prepared the staff. One of the nurses confronted Dr. Klikoff saying "we don't do breech births here!" The timid, quiet Dr. Klikoff that I had seen was gone in that moment. She told the nurse, to her face, that it was the safest decision for me and my baby by that point. Dr. Klikoff immediately got on the phone to the chairman of the hospital and got the go ahead for my breech delivery and my husband dismissed the nurse. My labor progressed and I delivered my baby shortly thereafter with the support and guidance of my husband, doula and Dr. Klikoff. She was very calm, precise and in control through the entire delivery. I had a healthy baby girl and my recovery was very fast. The only complaint I could mention is her office staff sometimes drops the ball on scheduling but Dr. Klikoff is a true gem. read more

I recommend Dr. Klikoff and her team to everyone who's looking for a low-intervention OB who, as some put it, "trusts birth". Dr. Klikoff was recommended to me by several people, patients as well as other birth professionals in the area, always with the preface "she's a little weird, but she's an excellent doctor". What they mean by "weird" is that Dr. Klikoff can seem a bit aloof, not much into small talk, and can come across as more of a scientist. But I have found her to be an outstanding doctor. She supports breastfeeding and natural birth without being dogmatic about it, and is known to keep c-sections and other interventions to an absolute minimum. As a lactation consultant once said to me, "If Dr. Klikoff does a c-section, you know there was really no other way to have that baby." She never tried to sell me on any unnecessary, costly intervention (unlike other OBs in the area!), and took her time on every appointment and with every question I had. She works with a great team of midwives, and whenever I had any concerns, questions or wanted to come in outside of the scheduled appointments, they talked to me over the phone and / or fit me in within a few hours or max. a day or two. I felt very well taken care of and will keep her for any future needs! read more

Dr. Klikoff is an all around great doctor. She delivered my son 8 years ago, at Sutter in Santa Cruz. I had a previous cesarean, and she helped me achieve a natural VBAC. Her office is comfortable and homey, with low wait times, and kid friendly atmosphere. In my experience, she is the kind of doctor who limits medical intervention as necessary and won't pressure you into procedures you don't want. She also attended a talk Ina May Gaskin (famous midwife) did in Monterey with me, which I thought was super cool for a doctor to be interested in what a midwife had to say. I received exemplary prenatal care under Dr. Klikoff! And I highly, wholeheartedly recommend her and would plan to see her again should I become pregnant. For my second pregnancy, I was looking for a totally different birthing experience and decided to meet with Dr. Klikoff to see if we connected. My first pregnancy three years prior was text-book perfect and I had prepared for a natural, drug-free delivery. I ended up with a very long and unsuccessful induction which ultimately led to a very UNPLANNED and UNWANTED cesarean section. I was looking for a physician who had experience with vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) and had to drive out of town (Santa Cruz) for this option since my local hospital didn't offer it. During our very first meeting I felt she was extremely intelligient and personable. Dr. Klikoff spent nearly an hour thoroughly answering my list of questions. She knew her numbers and shared her personal VBAC data with me. By the end of our session together, I felt 100% confident she was the ideal doctor for my second pregnancy. I went into labor 2 days shy of my due date. Dr. Klikoff was at my bedside when I needed her most and delivered my healthy baby girl after a suprisingly short labor. She adapted to my particular requests during labor (no counting during pushing, etc.) and was extremely patient and comforting throughout. Fortunately, I experienced an uncomplicated VBAC through a natural birth. Dr.Klikoff was the only care provider that didn't immediately treat me horribly when I came for my first prenatal in her office. I was 18, pregnant, unmarried and terrified. I had been to two other offices where I was treated like a hoodlum, repeatedly tested for drugs and pestered about my marital status. She was amazing throughout my entire pregnancy with my daughter & facilitated the most perfect, natural, serene birth I could've hoped for. She respected my wishes for no drugs, as well as my other birth requests. Now that my husband and I are expecting our second baby I am so sad her aptos practice closed, and that I need to go through someone else to deliver. Always presented information, the pros and cons of the various choices I could make--including doing nothing--and then had a great experience with outpatient surgery. Dr. Klikoff's surgery PERFORATED MY UTERUS rather than removing a questionable polyp for biopsy. She explained how it was really my fault for having a too-small opening in the cervix, and furthermore a uterus at a different angle from the cervix. The nerve! of an organic human, having anatomical variations. (Is this not covered in Surgery 101 on the first day?) Dr. K. made a 9mm puncture and said 'I could see your intestines.' This 'oh well sometimes these things happen' experience led to 3 weeks of lower-abdominal pain and cramping. Peritonitis and/or hemorrhaging did not develop however, so I did survive and was finally able to resume life and exercise. But now, Dr. K. and/or anyone on her staff, has yet to return my calls, my many calls. I seek to know the results of a second ultrasound, comparing the results to the first one of two months before: Is this polyp growing? Is it cancerous and metastasizing? Weeks have gone by and I still know nothing. So Much Anxiety! I express this urgency in my phone messages, but evidently don't rank among those worthy enough to actually CARE about or for. 'We're just so busy!' they say (but not with me). Other reviewers long ago have complained of the gross incompetence of her staff; it's still so true. It's also impossible to call without being put on hold, and usually several times. Since it took 1-1/2 months, including their mixups, to schedule this lovely experience in the first place, could there not have been comparative ultrasounds done in the first place? When the birth rate went down, ob-gyn docs pumped up business with 'preventative hysterectomies.' Have I too unwittingly assisted this 'practice building'? How this so-called doctor got a medical license is definitely one of those 'mysteries of the universe.' She is my second choice after Anyone Else. And she is soooo lucky I'm not filing a Malpractice Lawsuit. Not just yet anyway. read more

Dr. Klikoff was my prenatal care provider and Gynocologist. I was pregnant at the time and she chose to be my delivery doctor and set my date. What do you know I delivered on my scheduled date. She was very nice when examining my ultrasound pictures and answered all my questions. I discussed adoption options with her as I was unable to keep my baby. I was looking for OB/GYN and came across so many stars for Dr. Klikoff. I am outraged that she has so many stars for her practice. I saw Dr. Klikoff for my pre-natal oppointment seven years ago with my first pregnancy. I was at 7.5 months at a time and was prepairing for home birth with the midwife. Dr. Klikoff did not agree with my dietary choices, took Pap smear at 7.5 months and resulted the appointment with saying that my baby is too small and I should not even be dreaming about home birth, instead she said it would be better to extract the baby earlier, and let him grow in the incubator! She crashed me !!!! I cried for two weeks doubting myself. Then a month and a half later, I had a beautiful unassisted water birth at home with my husband to a super healthy baby boy, right on the term. We felt great, empowered and happy, - and still are - he is 7 yo now. Since then swore not to ever go see the OB/GYN, and had delivered two more healthy kids at home, without prenatal care - healthy, calm and beautiful. Docs like Alexandra Klikoff are monsters. She has 4 kids herself, but the way she treats other women is just a shame. If you do not want to feel judged and ridiculed, if you want to have a thrilling alternative choice birth experience, please do yourself a favor and find another OB/GYN. She should not have the right or authority of telling other women what to do. read more

If you want a VBAC, look no further! My first birth six years ago did not go as planned. I had hoped for a natural un-medicated birth. I attended the 6 week pre-natal classes at Sutter, had a great family doctor who was supported of my wishes and a sister by my side who had just given birth to her 5th child, I figured that was all I needed...I was so very ignorant to how hospital births work. At 12 days past my due date I reluctantly agreed to an induction (hind sight, I would have waited until it was truly medically necessary). 36 hours and many many interventions later, I was on an operating table having a C-section. I couldn't believe this had happened to me. I had read all about the 'cascade of interventions' and the high probability of C-sections these days, but I honestly didn't think it would happen to me. Although I was elated to meet my beautiful baby, and my C-section was not a traumatic experience or anything, I was visibly deflated for not being able to bring my baby into the world the way I had hoped. I knew from that day, my second go at this would be different... Fast forward 4 years and I was pregnant and ready to try this again, but this time I would NOT be ignorant and I would do everything in my power to VBAC this baby naturally. I explored the possibility of a home birth but for several reasons that was not the best option for me at the time, so I opted for the most VBAC friendly OB I could find, Dr. Alexandra Klikoff (and a GREAT doula, Sabine Omvik). I came to Dr. Kilckoff halfway through my pregnancy. Her first meeting with me she spent two hours with me! (After closing hours at her office!). She is quirky, yes, but in that wonderful geniuses way. She is smart and believes in a woman's natural ability to birth. She is a very 'midwifey' OB. As my due date approached and passed, I knew she was heading out of time (so obviously, I would be going into labor when she was not there). But she allowed me to go up to 42 weeks before doing a C-section (a full week longer than ANY other OB). That extra time was all I needed and I went into labor naturally 10 days after my due date. Luckily, I had a great nurse at the hospital (Dominican) who was very supportive of my desire to have a natural VBAC and her and the on-call OB read and followed my birth plan with respect. I think the fact the Dr. Klickoff was listed on my paperwork as my doc, added respect to my VBAC was given (just my feeling). 3.5 hours after arriving at the hospital I gave birth to my 10+ lbs baby ..all natural VBAC, 10 days post date...to say I was on cloud 9 is an understatement. This was the birth experience I had dreamed of, prayed for, worked for, and it happened. I still to this day (almost 2 years later) feel an incredible sense of empowerment from this birth. Even though she was not there for the birth, this birth would have never happened without Dr. Klickoff's willingness to work with me as an individual and not place a blanket one size fits all policy to me. Not the experience I was hoping for my first birth. She is a very knowledgeable but unkind doctor. I wish I did more research on her, she constantly was on me about my diet, trying to push her "caveman" like lifestyle on me. I had so many bad experiences during our appointments, starting from rescheduling my appointment without telling me until I get a "reminder" call, not submitting my insurance to the labs they use so I get big bills in the mail that freak me out (not the best for a pregnant woman to be constantly stressed) to leaving me in the un-air conditioned exam room for over an hour when it was one of the hottest days of the year outside. I actually walked by the break room that wreaked of burnt popcorn and they had multiple fans running! I was really disgusted when I saw that, being 7 months pregnant, in full uniform, (head to toe black) because they rescheduled my appointment without okaying it with me. My final checkup there was a problem with my insurance that I was unaware of, which they told me after my checkup! $200 please, the receptionist says as I leave... They wouldn't even fax my return to work paperwork so I had to run all over town to hand deliver it. She cares about delivering that baby, and that's it. She barely made it to my delivery on time, the hospital grabbed an ER doctor and told me to stop pushing because she was so late. I wish he did the delivery, he seemed excited, she said it was hard work for her too after I gave birth. I immediately felt taken care of by Dr. Klikoff and her midwife Donna. I left my OB/Midwife practice at 34 weeks pregnant because I didn't want to do an extensive diabetes stress test after being only a few points over the norm. I was dropped from the first practice unless I took this test. This caused me a lot of stress, as this was my first pregnancy and I had to work full time until one week before my due date (because I am a teacher and get no disability pay). I left the first practice simply because I didn't want to do an extensive diabetes stress test after being only a few points over the norm. I was dropped from the first practice unless I took this test. I started charting my own blood sugar and diet and brought in this information of 2 weeks to Dr. Kilkoff. She trusted me, which was the MOST important thing she could have done for my own empowerment as a healthy woman. I absolutely knew I did NOT have gestational diabetes. I never had a reading thereafter beyond the normal levels and I quit sugar all together just to keep me healthier. She let me chart it all myself and bring it into her several times during appointments. I ended up having a FABULOUS, natural, vaginal birth with little complications. My only issue was that my son was turned sideways after taking a while to goes from 9 to 10 cm. Dr. Klikoff totally supported me in taking my time during the birth and letting nature take its course. I NEVER felt rushed. I did several side-lying positions, lunges, and even got into the tub. She came in to check on me several times and finally broke my water to get me to the last stage. She allowed me to push in whatever position I wanted and really made me feel confident in my process. Donna, her support midwife, was an amazing support after the birth. She treated me warmly and kindly, like family. I really felt nurtured by the whole process. If we decide on another child without hesitation I will be going to Dr. Klikoff. She is not the most typical doctor, but she cares and supports natural birth, and doesn't seem afraid to risk herself for your betterment. read more
