I saw Dr Alexan in July 2025. That was the only time I met with him, now only tech's and a PA. It is April 3, 2026 and the only thing that has happened is my drivers license has been suspended. There are 3 scans the doctor has never seen. The information sent to the DMV was completed by a tech. If you have a choice of neurologists don't go here. If you do, you will never see the doctor, or review test results, or accurately schedule testing. read more

Dr Alexan and the staff in the back have been great. I saw him several months ago and I was ordered a bunch of testing to rule out autonomic dysfunction. These tests were scheduled months out due to availability. I've been suffering, waiting for these tests. I can barely function. I have severe dizziness, and brain fog, other symptoms. I finally wrap up all my tests, and realize I was never scheduled a follow up all those months ago when my other tests were scheduled. They said Alexan doesn't have an opening until July, and the other PA has an opening in late March. So I'll just continue to suffer and lose my job because I can't function while waiting on my follow up that should have been scheduled months ago. Thanks for caring. read more

MRI done for a brain cyst. Scheduled follow-up as a telehealth appt. for FOUR months out for the results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got a call 1 week prior to appointment that they have to reschedule because a PA left, so the appt wasn't even with the DOCTOR. Asked why it takes TEN months to get results of an MRI when results come in in a week; no answer. Was told they also will not see us for a tele-med because we pissed off the front desk clerk (their words). Unprofessional. Take your private insurance elsewhere. read more

I was on the fence about writing a review of a doctors office, because I don't typically like to write negative reviews, but after several not so perfect office visits over the years, I'm left with no other choice. Dr. Alexan himself is amazing. I won't go to another neurologist in Bakersfield, well, it's not like there are many other options anyways. He and the other doctors are top notch. His office staff has always been hit or miss. Leaning more towards miss. I'm bilingual and I can understand what some of them are saying in referring to some patients and it isn't always nice. I get it, I'm in a customer facing job and I understand that people can be real turds. But they forget that for some of these patients it can really feel like life or death and in some cases it is just that. That aside, I finally got approved and started a new medication. I'm taking it as prescribed by Dr. Alexan but had a brain fart on the last day of dosage, that being tonight. So I call the office just after 12 noon and the answering service tells me that they just stepped out to lunch, but she will relay my question as soon as they return at 1pm. By 3:40 I had yet to hear anything. So I call and get routed to a Debbie, who seemed less than excited to help. "Well, you're calling at 4 so I don't think he will get back to you today" isn't the most promising thing you want to hear, and isn't the most helping either. I let her know the urgency of my request and an hour later, I'd yet to hear anything still. I decided to go in person to speak with someone and I spoke with the check-in clerk who was super friendly and understanding. She sent the doctor a message and 20 minutes later, still no reply. I had her check again, and I informed her I'm willing to wait if he was wrapping up with other patients. She gets back to me and claims that Dr. Alexan said he would look into it tomorrow. Tomorrow's too late. Once I'm done with this medication I will be looking for another neurologist outside of Bakersfield. read more

The office staff are exactly what you'd expect at a doctor's office. Not exemplary, but nice enough. My issue is with Alexan and one of the female NP's. First, I could clearly hear her whispering and laughing about my case directly outside of the exam room I was in. No idea who she was talking to, but it felt extremely dehumanizing for my medical provider to be giggling about how I was likely faking my symptoms. Then, she came into the room without introducing herself and proceeded to treat me like a five year old. When Alexan came in, he was just as patronizing as the woman. He talked down to me and had the voice inflection you might expect when one is addressing a dog. He is exactly the type of doctor every person fears they are going to get. Arrogant, dismissive, and rude. As I explained my symptoms, he and the NP kept exchanging glances and smirks like they were sharing some inside joke right in front of me. My favorite person in this office, by far, is the male NP. I think his name is David, and he was wearing a cool Hawaiian shirt. He is competent, knowledgeable, and takes your concerns seriously. I hope he finds another office to work in so he is no longer dragged down by the ineptitudes of his "colleagues." Overall, I recommend this office ONLY if you are seeing David and ONLY David. Otherwise, avoid this office at all costs. Edit - I've just learned that the "office manager," the one that was called in to my mother's exam room to be a "witness," is Alexan's WIFE. Moreover, this office has a repeated history of billing insurances multiple times and ordered entirely unecessary tests. This is sounding insanely fishy to me, like some kind of insurance scam. This office needs to be investigated and Alexan and the female NP need to have their medical credentials revoked permanently. read more

Early January 2021 first appt with Dr. Alexan who was very patient with me and made sure he checked an double checked his work,asked me several questions about my injury and was a pleasure to talk to. Problem is noone in his office wants to work, guess it hurts to greet everybody, (I was greeted, however only one of the three who came in after me received a proper greeting and they never sent the results to my primary doctor (a request I made before I left and even told the receptionist the Dr. And the number to fax the documents over to ) One month later Feb. 2021 l showed up to my primary physicians office ..guess what?? no results. I called Dr. Alexans office after I was done with my primary doctor and his receptionist apologized and ensured me she would fax them over ASAP. Mid March 2021 head over to my primary.. I was referred to Dr. Alexan for a recurring headache and dizziness. As a non-STAT patient, I had to wait almost 3 months from scheduling to the exam. The front desk was friendly and checked me in right away. The medical assistant came and got me before I even finished all my paperwork. Everything seemed clean and orderly. When I got into the exam room, the assistant talked to me about my symptoms and took down my general information. She was friendly and considerate. There were some problems finding my MRI information, but she was patient in figuring out the issue and successfully found them instead of just giving up. Then, the NP came in after her. She asked a few more questions and did a LOT of physical tests to check my strength and reflexes. She seemed to be in a grumpy mood, asking me "Why are you here?" as a way of inquiring about my symptoms. Also seemed a bit impatient with me during some of the tests (particularly the ones that required a light shining in my eyes) and what she felt were inadequate descriptions of my dizziness. After all the tests, Dr. Alexan came in shortly thereafter. I really wasn't waiting very long at any stage of the appointment. He talked with me some more about my symptoms, reviewed all the documentation, and spent time looking at my MRI results. He concluded I have a rare type of primary headache and spent time telling me about the headaches and what I can do to treat them. He wasn't rushed, nor was I made to feel rushed. He made sure I understood everything and gave me opportunities to ask questions. Overall, very competent and knowledgeable. After the exam is over, there is another desk to the right of the "check-in" desk to "check-out." I didn't notice it when I came in for some reason. The "check-out" desk will make the next appointment for you if necessary. They also printed out a summary of the exam for me. Overall, it's a good office and doctor, and I would recommend Dr. Alexan if you are in need of a neurologist. read more

The manager was so dismissive with my complaint which explains why the office runs the way it runs. The providers are ok, not top of the line like the office manager claims. I find him to be arrogant. My husband had a neck injury that we felt was causing his disc to press on his spinal cord. Dr. Alexan showed us the xray, which clearly showed an impression into the chord by the disc. He insisted that the disc was not pushing on the spinal cord because you could see spinal fluid and he would be showing loss of use in his limbs. It wasn't completely compressed, but you could definitely see where the disc was in contact with the cord. He told my husband that no surgery would help him with pain unless the spinal cord was compressed. I couldn't believe it because I could see the compression. 3 days later, my husband almost dropped a bowl of soup and was unable to lift his arm but a few inches. We immediately went to Spine and Ortho with this information and his xrays. They scheduled surgery immediately. He definitely had a compression of his spinal cord as well as many disc fragments in his neck. Since the surgery, his neck has felt better than ever and he has recovered about 90% of his arm usage. I'll never go back to this quack again. read more

This office is unorganized and does not write notes in your file if you talk to them. They billed me 3 times and told me twice not to worry about a certain amount because it was their fault so they would waive it. This never happened!! I got a bill 3 months later for the same amount they already indicated they would waive twice! However, no one ever write notes in my file so Debbie, who was very rude and directed me to my insurance to deal with this even though this wasn't my insurance's mistake, insisted there was nothing she could do and she had no notes in the account regarding the two previous calls I made. Steer clear of this office at all cost!!! You will likely get called into an exam room within 15 minutes of your appointment time but I can guarantee you that you will sit in the exam room for AT LEAST ONE AND A HALF HOURS minimum before you see a provider!! This will happen each and every time time you have an appointment. If you complain, you will be told " this isn't a primary care office, it's a specialty office". I have been taking my Mom for years and it's the same thing every time with the delayed wait. Try entertaining a Alzheimer's patient for 90+ minutes in a room with no windows, no magazines or anything to distract her! Over the years there have been great (mostly) Nurse Practitioner's but they didn't stay long in the practice and we would have to see a new one the next time. Today we saw the doctor himself and he is by far the worst doctor I have seen practice medicine. He spent maybe 5 minutes with my mom after we had sat for 85 minutes. He was brash and dismissive. I had to tell him three times where to sign for my Moms prescriptions and he refused to sign a form I needed to return to my moms facility stating the office needs to fill it out and I would need to pick it up next week. What a con man. I came in with the CLASSIC symptoms of a stroke. He spent two seconds with me, ordered a bunch of irrelevant tests, and TWO MONTHS later, said he couldn't find anything wrong with me. It was one of the low points of my life. I thought I'd never get better, since this neurologist couldn't determine what the problem was. Cut to two weeks later, and, after working with me for two minutes, a physical therapist figured it out. I'm getting the care I need, but my recovery was set back by this incompetent, immoral boob. Never go there if you can go somewhere else. The motto in the waiting room says something like " just because we can't see it ,doesn't mean it's not there". I have been dealing with an issue for 5 years , IT'S THERE! To have a Dr. walk in and say there is nothing wrong with you, he didn't look at scans from MRI to compare, became agitated when I told him what my primary physician had said. He offered to give me drugs to sleep, thanks doc but that doesn't solve the problem. The receptionist, the first person I saw when I entered, kept her back turned while talking to the other girls in office only to say "I'll be with you shortly' then turned back to continue her talk about current affairs? After seeing a different doctor I can say that Richard Alexan has absolutely no business seeing patients or having his office manager Robin Alexan (yes that's right his wife) speaking to patients. They dynamic duo will be the reason that practice will eventually fail and Alexan will go back into hiding as he did years ago leaving his patients without any explanation. Funny how things like that follow you. The only reason that place stays open is he managed to find a nurse practitioner that everyone seems to love. We got close to being able to meet with this guy but a las it wasn't meant to be! I saw a neurologist for some 16 or so years that finally retired. She only ran 1 test on me all that time to rule out MS and nothing more. I was referred to Dr Alexan. I have to say he has done more for me *test wise* and actually gave me a plan of what is to come after 1 visit. Within 1 month I saw him and had 2 test done. Now I am waiting for follow-up for those 2 to see if the other 2 are needed. He has very good bed side manners which is very important to me. Writting this review for my Mom because she is not familiar with Yelp. After reading her the other reviews I got her permission to share her experience. After a TIA and other issues in May of 2017 her primary doctor suggested she see this doctor over any other on her insurance plan. The request was submitted as a STAT. My mom has an HMO plan so the request took about a week to get approved by GEMCare. GEMCare called my Mom and gave her the go ahead to schedule her apt. When my Mom called the doctor office she was told they needed an actual paper with the approval on it - not just the word from a GEMCare employee. Another week went by and my Mom received her letter from GEMCare. She called again to make an apt and was told they still did not have their paper. My Mom faxed them her copy and it still was not good enough. Another week went by and she was told "dont call us - we will call you". She finally received a call to schedule her STAT apt for July! Two months later. Remind you, this is for a mini stroke. A serious matter! The day before her appointment an office employee called my Mom's home phone number to confirm her appointment. My Mom works all day and her primary method of contact is a cell phone not her home message box! The office representative called back at 2pm, again at home, and left a message that because my Mom did not confirm her apointment they had no choice but to cancel her for the next day! WHAT?! My Mom did not get the messages until she came home from work after 5pm. After the office had closed for the day. She did speak to someone at the answering service and explained they called the wrong number to reach her at and she wanted to keep her appointment. Such a sad situation. We all understand the doctor is in high demand but patients need to be taken care of better by his staff. They wouldnt be sent to this office in the first place if it wasnt a priority. Long story short, my Mom was sent to a different neuro office and they took her STAT request more seriously and were happy to get her in. read more

Dr. Alexan made me cry on my birthday. Maybe it was the 1 hour wait, the fact that im getting older, or the "lady problems" that caused my emotions to run high that led to tears on the drive to my next destination, but I sobbed. I had an apt at 3pm, at 3:55 I started to get worried. I even showed up early to begin the new patient paperwork. I had to make to class by 430 across town. I notified the assistant and politely asked how much longer, "he'll be right with you, he's finishing up some tests," okay cool. I appreciate a doctor that spends extra time with his patients, but a little notification or sympathy goes a long way. At 4 I decided to go to the clerk and try reschedule, she was willing to try to sqeeze me in asap. Right on. Another assistant interrupted to inform me he was done go back in and see him real quick. Okay I go back. After a minute, they say never mind. By that point there were other patients checking in/out at the front desk so I left in a hurry and thought it would be okay to call for that rescheduled apt. When i did, I was told to go back to my physician and they would NOT be rescheduling my apt. because I "walked out". I have multiple sclerosis, recently diagnosed, just trying to find a neurologist in town. I've heard great things, my dad has been a patient and I thought this would be a pleasant experience. This doctor is terrible. I had seen him after being hospitalized for pesticide exposure. I provided a lot of documentation and literature supporting my position that the pesticides caused my issues. The doctor was dismissive and in his report he minimized my situation and didn't give it enough serious attention. read more

Yeesh a little hard to see the rest of these reviews tearing up my doctor. He's been nothing but good to me and professional. Some comments I can understand. I suppose he can be a little gruff and blunt at times but nothing that has been off-putting or rude or anything like that. He's got plenty of moments of levity and overall from what I've heard, he's a well respected and knowledgeable neurologist and that's what should really matter. His staff is pretty average as far as making you feel welcome and such. Sometimes I'm greeted with a smile and other times not much. So they're not the greatest, not the worst. I'll never forget the time I had a seizure about 5 or so years ago and he came to visit me at the hospital in the middle of the night to check on me and see how I'm doing. That always stuck with me. That showed me he cares about his patients and looks out for their best interests. So I got nothing but good things to say about my doctor. Some people just need a little thicker skin when it comes to certain things. I've heard from multiple credible people that he's the best neurologist in town and maybe California. So personally I appreciate his knowledge and the help he's given me. He's a great doctor. His assistant Tyson is also very helpful, courteous, and professional. I like their team. read more

Dr. Alexan and his physician assistant (Tyson Fieldsted) are outstanding. I have been to their office for three separate visits for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and all of the staff have been courteous and professional. Both Dr. Alexan and his physician assistant explain things well, discuss treatment plan options and run the necessary tests. They also did a very thorough complete neurology exam to make sure there were no other neurology issues besides CTS. In the past, when I have seen doctors they run a nerve conduction study only. Dr. Alexan is the only neurologist in Bakersfield that also performs an ultrasound which is much more useful to a physician or surgeon because it shows the nerve in the arm, etc., and helps the doctor and patient make an informed decision about the need for surgery, etc. I am very pleased that my primary physician sent me to Dr. Alexan's office. read more

Called and made an appointment a few days ago with the receptionist to see Dr. Alexan, spent 30 minutes getting set up as a new patient, provided all required Insurance information, receptionist confirmed my appointment date for February as it was the first available date they had. After changing my work schedule a bit, I called today to change my appointment date. The answering receptionist looked me up by birthdate, appointment time/date, and name, and then says flatly "you are not in our system" and asked me if I had called the correct Doctor. I reassured her that yes, I have all of my notes written properly and could she check the date and time again, she laughed (?) and stated "yeah you're not here". I replied, "well, I'm glad I called to check, should I find a different Doctor?" and she chuckled again, said nothing and hung up. I'm glad I checked today, I suppose it saved me from taking off work to have this experience in person. It's wild that medical professionals in Bakersfield behave so.. unprofessionally. My assumption is that they feel entitled to do so because there are so few options in this city. Save yourself the (literal) headache and just make the drive to LA. read more

Okay, so I've seen Dr. Alexan once, so far. He was highly recommended by my Primary Care Physician, whom I trust with all my being. After reading the reviews here on Yelp, I was reluctant to go to him; but, I went anyway. After all, it took 2 months to get an appointment to see him. When he first walked into the room (after waiting in the exam room for over 30 minutes), he seemed eccentric. I didn't appreciate him walking out of the room soon after he came in my room to examine me, but, he apologized for having to walk out, and began the exam. I found him to be direct, professional, and thorough. He asked me very personal questions which normally I would feel uncomfortable answering, but he was not judgmental, and continued to be professional and thorough. I appreciated his bedside manner. He ordered some tests to be done, told me why he ordered the tests. It all made sense, I have no problem with having the tests done. Like I said, this is my first visit to Dr. Alexan, and so far, I don't have a problem with him. NOW.....................HIS OFFICE STAFF, now that's a different story! The receptionist that you check in with, I'm sorry I didn't get her name. She was neither rude, nor friendly. I have a problem with that. She literally had NO EYE CONTACT with me, whatsoever. This was my first time to the office, therefore, she was my first impression when I walked in. She nonchalantly handed me paperwork to fill out, asked me for my insurance cards and ID, and told me she'd let me know when she's done with them. Like I said, not rude............but MOST IMPORTANTLY............not friendly! I'm deducting a half star, for that count alone. When I was done with my exam with Dr. Alexan, I was told to go back out to the Waiting Room, and 'they' would schedule my next appointments and tests that needed to be done. I walked out, and went to the same place I started...........the dreaded front desk. The girl in the desk behind the first receptionist that checked me in (her name is Lily), looked at me (as if I was supposed to know where to go), and abruptly said, "Are you checking out?" I said, "Yes." She rudely said to me, "You need to go over there (and pointed to her left) to check out." I was offended at the way she spoke to me. (And therefore, I'm deducting another half star). I stood there for a second, then I said to her, "Oh, okay! I didn't know that! This is my first time here!" Suddenly, I felt like the negative things that I've read here on Yelp about the Office Staff were coming true. I did NOT want to go to the next window and interact with yet, another rude office staff member. I was hating life right about then. It was finally my turn to have contact with the person who, is now in charge of making my next appointments and giving me further instructions. WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR! Her name is Vanessa! She was all smiles!............friendly!............helpful!.............happy.............! All the while, trying to answer the phones that were ringing off the hook, but still kept calm, professional, friendly, happy, helpful...............I can't use enough adjectives to describe this wonderful young woman! As the phones were ringing off the hook, and no one in the front office at that time to help answer the calls, she kept me "number one", made my appointments, answered my many questions, went above and beyond. As it turned out, I forgot my paperwork for my blood tests in the office before I left! This was a Friday, when the office closes early. Somehow, a couple of hours later, she had noticed that I forgotten the paperwork in the office. She called me and asked me if I would like for her to mail them to my home address so I could go and get the tests done. Like I said, SHE went above and beyond. She was wonderful! (We both laughed at the fact I had forgotten the paperwork!) One last note.............if anyone from Dr. Alexan's office monitors, or reads Yelp reviews; I suggest at the next office staff meeting, the office manager might want to go over FRONT OFFICE STAFF ETIQUETTE. And keep in mind, the patients see the front office FIRST, and LAST. Really, keep that in mind...............it makes a difference. If a patient doesn't get good treatment during those times, they're most likely not to go back again, no matter how good the Dr. is, just so they don't have to put up with unnecessary attitudes. Most people don't bring it to the Dr.'s attention of how they were interacted with, but, when I go back, I will definitely let Dr. Alexan know everything I mentioned here in my review. Since writing my original review, I have talked with my other family members that have been seeing Dr. Alexan. For specific details, please see my original review. The issue that had been somewhat challenging in the past is the office and assistants. However, the last several visits have shown a major improvement in patient interaction. I have noticed that the staff have been friendly and quick to help. I think that Dr. Alexan was told of the past problems and his staff are working on patient interaction. As I mentioned in my original review, my family and I will only choose Dr. Alexan for neurological care. The three of us that see Dr. Alexan receive top-notch care by a well-skilled doctor, in a clean and well-kept facility that employs good people. We'll see how the financial policies go this year in January when my new deductible kicks in, but other than that, I feel things are as good as I expect from a doctor and his/her staff. read more

This place is totally dishonest. They will tell your insurance is approved then bill you direct. And they won't tell you insurance disapproved they will keep scheduling you and keep running the bill up. I would recommend never going here ever!!! read more

Dr. Alexan himself has been good to me, however, the staff is hit and miss. When he had an office on 34th street someone scheduled me to come in as always to that office. I got there and another doctor was in the office space so I called the other office number but it was a Friday and the office was closed so not only was I not informed of the 34th st. office closing but was scheduled for a day when no one was in. At that time there was also a problem with time spent in the waiting room. This was all several years ago. Fast forward to the last year. I thought about surgery so called numerous times to have copies of my paperwork sent to my hospital of choice. The person responsible never got around to faxing my papers and wouldn't give me so much as a return phone call so I ended up asking what I guess was the receptionist to fax them. Now I've called for a refill but was told that the notes said I was no longer seeing the doctor. I told her that was not true, I simply was going for consultation for possible surgery. The wait time is still fairly long and some of the staff is friendly but some are really rude. I am happily looking for another doctor. read more
