They came highly recommended and I was obviously looking for a school with academics as a priority. Math and Language Arts are THE integral part of the school day. I feel confident my child will be more than ready for the most prestigious high schools. One hundred percent of this year's graduating 8th graders applying to private high schools were accepted I just heard. Wow. The hands on Science program and "Maker's Space"(which teaches children coding, robotics, 3D printing, electronics, etc.) are both phenomenal and I cannot say enough about their Art, Music, P.E., Theater, Foreign Language and Library programs. The difference however, with ACDS is its focus on each child. The moment I enrolled I knew I was entering my child into knowledgeable hands under caring and dedicated teachers that would encourage his gifts as well as continuing with academic rigor. Whether it be their after school sports or enrichment programs as well as the over 40 electives in middle school, he would find "his" path. Since that day, my child has broadened both in his academic knowledge and most importantly, his self confidence. He is an 4th grader and loves his school! The tenured teachers, under an exceptional Head of School, encourage self exploration and provide the opportunity for each child individually to find their path while still adhering to curriculum. No school is perfect and I am totally aware...but they ask. In a yearly survey we are asked, How are things? How can we do better? Does your child feel challenged and accepted? Do you feel a part of your child's education and development? Do you and your child feel a part of the community? (Along with much more!) Its other accolade is their TLC program which is one of the only specialized programs of its kind in the Bay Area. It provides 4:1 ratio for children who need small group education (within perimeters) in Math, Language Arts and Social Studies while integrating for other studies into the larger classroom experience in preparation for high school. It is a supportive environment with specially trained teachers that allows children to feel confident in their learning. My child has benefitted tremendously from this program while still feeling accepted within the larger program. ACDS has intentionally planned for seamless transitions within children's daily routines. I encourage anyone interested to go to their website or an open house and see for yourself. I encourage you to talk to other parents! Several! Or even the kids (whom by the way give the open house tours.). Your school choice is a big decision I know. I was there. The more information the better so you can make the decision what is right for your child and your family. ACDS was the right choice for mine.

Now our younger son is there, and he LOVES it. Mrs. Middleman has been a superb principal for at least the last two years (as long as our younger son has been there), and we were VERY sad to see her go. Last year the first graders had a "50s day" to celebrate the 50th day of school, and Mrs. Middleman was out there with us, hula hooping and hand jiving with the kids. You can tell she really cares about the students. I'm sure that there are "bad" teachers somewhere at this school, but we haven't encountered one yet, and everything I hear about different teachers is positive. If I had one "negative" to say about the school its that I miss the lady who used to work in the front office. When my younger son started kindergarten in 2015, the same gal from 10 years ago when my oldest was there was still working the front desk, and she was so great. The ladies there now are great too, but I miss her. :( They started offering Transitional Kindergarten this past year, and we are super looking forward to our daughter starting as a "TKer" next year. Also, the on campus YMCA is the absolute best ever. Ms, Nicole is AMAZING with the kids. She's been there for at least 10 years (she ran it when our older son was there). Both of our boys LOVE her. And our older son still talks about some of the other staff (Montel and Smith) who worked there when he was there. Every day when I go to pick up my son from the Y, he asks if I can come back later to get him because he's right in the middle of something (sometimes a craft, sometimes just playing with friends). Its such a great feeling to know your children are happy and being taken good care of while you are at work. :) Overall this school is an amazing gem hidden away in south SJ. We are in San Jose, but part of the Morgan Hill school district, so we have the best of both worlds. And its right in our neighborhood, so we can walk the kids to school in the morning if we want... small town living in a big city!

As a parent who's children are assigned to this school district, I will NOT send my child to this school with these test results. They clearly have the funding, so why the poor test scores? The learning experience is so different from what you see in most traditional schools. The kids get to participate in so many amazing things like social emotional learning, parent-led enrichments, working in the school garden, and monthly field trips that bring what they're learning to life. One of the most unique parts of Indigo is the parent participation model. Being able to spend time in the classroom and on the playground with your child is really special and honestly invaluable. You get to know your child's friends and their parents, which creates a strong and supportive community. It's been wonderful getting to know the families and feeling like we're all working together to support the kids. Another thing I really appreciate is the sense of safety on campus. The school is gated and locked during the day, but on top of that there are often many parent volunteers around campus, which adds an extra layer of visibility and support for the students. Parent participation does require a commitment, but the school and the PTA work with families to make it manageable. I work full time and have still been able to make it work. What surprises me most is that more people don't know about this program! I think many people might not realize it's a full K-8 public school, so it's free and open to anyone to apply. If you're looking for a school where kids are engaged, learning in hands-on ways, and where families are truly part of the community, Indigo is the way to go!
