I know I've already written about the Migros in Zurich and they technically carry most of the same…read morethings but this is a review to thank the lovely butcher in the Migros on bahnhofstrasse in Schaffhausen. I have recently become very close to this grocery store because I've begun to cook meals for my boyfriends family. It's quite nerve racking actually. (Warning: I'm going to ramble in this paragraph, if you don't like rambling skip to the next paragraph!!!). I've never been very confident with my cooking in the U.S. and now I'm attempting to cook for a family and I have to find things in a German grocery store!!! Yikes! Talk about scary. Also, the U.S. is really stupid for not converting to the metric system. It makes it a pain in the ass to read recipes. And I'm not advanced enough to read German recipes yet. But I'm open to challenges I suppose. Anyway, I decided I was going to cook a pork loin for them (it had to feed 5 people). So I go down to the butcher and look at the meat and ask him in horribly broken German how much it would cost for 1.5 kg of pork loin. 68 CHF. That's when I started to freak out. I had never bought meat from a butcher! Well, not meat that I'd have to do something serious with! Just some things I could grill. I had no idea if this would even turn out good. I had all that to think about and I hadn't even considered the cost. 68CHF! WTF! I think Mr. Butcher could see the panic on this poor poor girls face. He was so sweet. Instead he picked up a massive hunk of pork shoulder and told me this would be good. I though, crap, he doesn't even know what I'm making! I don't even know how to cook this! what do I do!? what what what!? He asked to see the recipe and I showed him it and told him I was cooking it in a Rumertopf. He listed the exact directions I would need to cook it with and told me I'd do a great job. Mind you this is quite a long conversation because it's a mixture of very bad German and semi good English and a lot of giberish coming out of my mouth because at this point I'm so nervous I can't think straight. ANYWAY, the bottom line is this man was so patient with me. He wasn't too proud to only speak in German, and he was also very honest with me. I felt very very taken care of. He also knew I couldn't afford to pay 68CHF so he found something I COULD afford- the pork shoulder was 28CHF. Also, the meal turned out pretty awesome. Probably the best thing I've cooked so far!!! BAM! This grocery store carries pretty much all that you need. I kind of doubt that they have whole turkeys (I'm going to attempt a Thanksgiving dinner next Thursday, get ready world), but besides that they carry a nice selection of meats and produce. The people working here are also so kind and nice. I've had to ask plenty of people in either German or English what something is or where it is and they always answer nicely. Actually the other day I wanted a bag of shredded parmesan cheese, so I went up to a lady with a bag of shredded cheese and said "I want this, but in parmesan" and she said... that IS parmesan. She could have rolled her eyes at me or called me stupid, but she was very sweet to the poor American girl. hahaha! Random facts! They do not have brown sugar.. I think it's a bit hard to come by here in Switzerland. Migro's doesn't carry black beans or oreos. Also, Migros doesn't have alcohol, you'll have to hop over to Coop for that. But Migro's has better crackers- Blevita beats DarVida!!!! That's just my opinion though.
