So I recently discovered Aldi and now it has become a regular party of my grocery store rotation. I love the low prices and ransoms fines throughout the store. And it really doesn't hurt that the first things offered when I walk in are dessert and wine! What more could a woman ask for? Well, a quick sweep for one. There is always quite a bit of debris on the floor. Maybe I am going late and they are in that last stretch before closing? Plus there are usually large sections of the cooler or freezer that are empty. I am generally comfortable going there and they always have employees around to ask questions to. I really enjoy browsing up and down the aisles. I do have to acknowledge that they have a great selection of produce for a smaller grocery store and I can always find my staples (frozen fruit, bananas and almond milk). However, if you are planning a trip here be sure to grab your reusable grocery bags or some other way of lugging your finds. While they do have bags, you have to pay per bag and it can start to eat into all the money you saved!

She didn't have to do that, and she was super helpful to pick it up when I couldn't get my hands under the box.

It was so nice to see fresh fruits that don't look like they've been picked through. We bought tons of fruits, an freshly squeezed juices. Including some horchata and strawberry aqua Fresca. Both delish and gone within a day by the way. We picked through some of the deli, and butcher sections and love seeing the variety of items from different cultures. Overall a great market, we will be back!

The only good reason to shop here is the Tuesday senior discount day which saves you 10 percent (you still need a store account to get the discount so keep that in mind). Today was my second visit on a row where the checkout person wouldn't bag my groceries. They don't ask you to do it, or offer to do it themselves, they just let everything pile up at the end and then act annoyed. I see other checkout people bagging groceries for the customers so apparently it's just the luck of the draw. So, fine, I'll do it myself. As I'm bagging my own groceries the checkout woman starts ringing up the next customers groceries! Now out stuff is mixed up because not only will this woman not do her job properly, she won't even wait for me to do HER job for her! Her name was Karen (I believe her last name initial was S) and if anyone cares even slightly about keeping this store running they'll train her and the rest of the employees to do the bare minimum moving forward. This was my worst experience here so far. I noticed my favorite cashier was pushing carts outside for some reason, I miss that young guy. He knew how to treat customers and always put his best foot forward. The fact that he's pushing carts while I'm stuck bagging my own groceries is a clear sign of mismanagement at this location, I hope they can improve because otherwise I'm done shopping here.

Grayslake Farmers Market - Beautiful day for a market. Unusually slow at the moment.

It…read morewas in very early spring, or maybe it was early summer actually, and there were very few vendors there. So my next visit wasn't until the summer and boy what a difference. Once the summer kicks in, there is quite a variety to choose from. The produce itself can be really really good or really underwhelming. Sometimes it is hit or miss. The other things of the farmers market, like Lesters Bison and Nana's Rum Cakes and Wildflower Bakery and the wine tastings they have really help to balance out all of those nutritious fruits and vegetables-makes it worth it. It's all about balance, right? ha ha One of my friends turned me onto the Lesters Bison vendor, and I will say if you're trying to cut back on fat and calories and cholesterol, this is the way to go. So now instead of using ground beef, I try and pick up some ground bison. We also tried the bison patties already formed and they were really great. We weren't sure what to expect but I kid you not, very flavorful and juicy. If this was regular ground beef and it was that thin, it would have been dull, tasteless and dry- the difference was very surprising. They also have tons of cuts of steak (ribeye was of course delish), and other choices like elk, etc. Let me just say this for the record: get your ass to Nana's Rum Cakes! You will not regret this. This is rum cake on a whole nother level. The couple that sells them, one of which is Nana, is charming, delightful. And I love supporting local business, but the spectacular taste of these rum cakes is what keeps you going back. I'm an addict for life now. I like the plain-vanilla or the plain-vanilla with nuts, but my husband is a drag and doesn't like the nuts, hehe, so I sacrifice for him. ha ha While the chocolate rum cake was okay, we both agreed it was not as special. But the plain-vanilla and with nuts is not to be missed. The market is especially lovely in the late summer or early fall. Two days ago it was just gorgeous. And there are a lot of vendors to choose from. You can go to their website and see which vendors will be there which week. It's very user friendly. Summer hours are 3-7 on Wednesdays, but they are soon switching for the new fall schedule which is on Saturday (mornings, I believe?), so hit up the website for hours. Why aren't you there yet?? Nana's waiting for you; don't disappoint Nana, people.

In the summer, the market is on Wednesdays from 3-7pm, and this past winter was the first ever winter market, approximately one Saturday per month. The summer market seems to get bigger every year. There is, of course, lots of local produce and flowers, but there are also baked goods, candy, pasta, cheese, meat, fish, snack food, honey, soap, olive oil, tea, wine, as well as food vendors selling snacks to be eaten at the market. The winter market, despite the cold/snow and being much smaller than the summer market, was surprisingly good for its first attempt. There was a good sampling of the above vendors, minus the produce. I give the vendors that stuck it out in the cold a lot of credit! And now, for some of my personal favorite market vendors: -peaches and berries from the fruit vendor from Michigan -the cheese vendor from Wisconsin -the organic produce vendor from nearby Prairie Crossing -all sorts of apple goodness from an orchard in Harvard -addicting snack mix from Gurnee -yummy toffee from Cynthia's Sweets in Grayslake -baked goods (especially the olive rosemary bread and cinnamon buns) from Wild Flour Bakery in Milwaukee -pasta from Pasta Sue (especially the gnocchi) *and my most favorite: traditional French pastries made by a religious order of French sisters in Chicago. The nuns spend hours in the hot afternoon sun in full habit selling the pastries to help fund their charity work in Chicago. They are lovely, generous, and excellent bakers!

Everything about this location is great apart from one very frustrating, insulting, major customer…read moreservice flaw... Greed! Customers often leave change in the self checkout registers and the staff collects that money and keeps it in a cup in a drawer at the CS Station at that area. There have been times when I've needed literally $0.02 in change and have been refused using the loose change left by Customers to make up for the shortage; being told that it's against Company policy to give that money to customers, and one member even went so far as to tell me that she "could get fired" for giving me a couple cents in change to complete my transaction! Really? Meijer is going to terminate an employee for letting customers make up insignificant shortages with change left behind by other customers that their billion dollar corporation isn't entitled to in the first place?! That is Customers' money. "Leave a Penny/Take a Penny" Not only isn't Meijer entitled to that money to begin with, but I personally have done my fair share of "Free Labor" restocking items that other shoppers left on shelves in wrong isles, reshelving product that fell on the floor, reporting spills so customers don't slip and fall and sue Meijer for thousands, folding clothes, etc. All this Community Service I do to help keep the store neat and safe is certainly worth a few pennies every now and then, which is to say nothing of the fact that I have personally given my change to the Self checkout staff and told them to put it in the bucket and Pay It Forward! People are struggling to make ends meet, and Meijer or Meijer staff are refusing to put unearned change back into the pockets of paying customers?! That's deplorable. It's exactly this kind of Corporate Greed that lends or even inspires people to feel justified in retail theft. Lastly, a big shout out to Sam D. Best Meijer staff member ever!
