At Aldi, you'll find great prices but poor value. If your choice is shopping at Aldi or stealing loaves of bred to feed your famished family, then you will find cheap food at Aldi. If you realize that value differs from price, you will find a better value elsewhere (e.g., Target).
I have to admit that I'm probably not the intended customer here. I do most of my shopping at Whole Foods. I would ordinarily not go to a store like Aldi (and this is a trip from my home), but I read a story in the Wall St. Journal several years ago about its business methods, and went out of curiosity because the Aldi system has worked very well in Europe.
I purchased almost $250 worth of items. This is what I liked:
- Frozen vegetables - Aldi was cheap and had some frozen veggies I couldn't find elsewhere (frozen asparagus? awesome!)
- Frozen fish - Cheap and tasty
- Bottled water - For just about two bucks for 24, this was a great price.
- Pretzels - I got a gigantic tub of pretzels that lasted several weeks in my office for a couple of bucks
- String Cheese - Same as what you'd find in stores
- Bagged salads - This is the same everywhere you'd go
- Pastic bags, paper bowls - Cheap but intentionally disposable
These are things that were nasty:
- Red meat with "solution" - Most of the red meat at Aldi is injected with a solution that adds water weight to the item and masks unsavory tastes with a buttery flavor. Avoid the meat unless it's the ultra-premium kind without any additives.
- Chicken breasts - While the price was awesome, the chicken had a "stringy" consistency to it so that it would flake apart in perfect strands, almost as if it were processed and then placed into breast-shaped molds.
- Cereals - Milk doesn't go with woodchips
- Fruits - There were tons of fruit flies around the store, nesting on the fruits. I didn't take any fruit for fear that it would be tainted and lead to a flea circus in my kitchen.
- Ground turkey - Aldi's ground turkey was subject to a recall recently for salmonella concerns
- Beach chairs - This seasonal item started warping after its first use at the beach
In addition to the questionable food, there's other reasons why this place delivers poor value, even if the prices are good:
- You have to pay $3+ to park
- You have to bring your own bags
- You have to bag your own groceries
- Aldi doesn't have the full line of items you'd expect to see in a supermarket, requiring you to supplement your shopping trip with a trip to another store
- Aldi won't take credit cards. They accept debit cards, but there was a heavily reported security breach a couple of years ago, and I don't want fraudsters going into my checking account (rather than just taking money from a credit card balance that just exists in a computer somewhere). So, bring cash--a lot of it.
- The store intentionally conceals its phone number to avoid providing customer service if there's a problem
Most importantly, when you compare Aldi to neighborhood grocery stores in Manhattan, the prices are good. But if you shop at Target, the savings compared to Aldi is very marginal. Plus, because Target features brand name items and doesn't hassle you with bagging your own groceries and hiding its customer service phone number, you'll receive a much better value there.
The prices are good. But when you look at the whole value calculation, Aldi doesn't fare well. read more
