When I was a child, my Mom would shop at Aldi's and it has been upgraded since then. If I am going to shop at an no frills, discount grocery store , then Aldi's is a good choice. They have name brands and no brands. The store is very clean and they have health conscious choices as well. This is a BIG improvement from when Aldi's first came onto the scene back in the 70's. It;s good for stocking up on canned items and has a variety of cheeses - gourmet and processed,frozen aisle might be where they don't have A HUGE variety.But,I can come here for my fat free half and half, orange juice with calcium, snack items, cheap produce. Aldi is the cheapest grocery store in Philly. For that, I love it, but they can only provide such low prices by running a certain way. So bear in mind: 1. Small selections. Fresh chilli peppers? Nope. Fresh herbs? Nope. Anything slightly unusual like pine nuts or coconut milk? Nope. Only one type of everything, where most stores have 10 options for apples. 2. Inconsistent selections. They stock what they can get cheaply so the selection varies from one week to the next. Fun surprises like bargain pineapple in January, but you can't be sure exactly what they'll have. 3. Efficient check-out. Products are basically completely covered in barcodes so the staff can scan super-quickly. Bag your own items after paying and moving away. Bring your own bags or take empty stock boxes. Love it. 4. Store-brand products. Very few brands in here. Coke and some Nestlé chocolates and that's about it. But if you're happy with all that, it's a great place to shop! Staff are competent and efficient, if a bit brusque. They are also tinkering with some more "premium" products like organic eggs and smoked salmon. Based on how the neighbourhood is going, it'll be 90% quinoa before too long. read more

I love shopping here and do so every chance I get. The prices are dirt cheap! I was a little skeptical about the quality of the food until I realized, the same person who owns Trader Joe's also owns Aldi's. They have an excellent selection of fresh vegetables and fruit at prices that won't burn your wallets. I am a big seafood person so I was overjoyed at the seafood prices. At one point they even had lobster tails. There is also a lot of imported chocolates, pastries, pastas, and sauces. Things you wouldn't expect to find here. I never had authentic welsh cheddar until I shopped here!! This is a no thrills no frills store. You have to pay 25 cent to use the carts. You also have to pay for $10 cent a bag and you bag up your own groceries. There are boxes in the far corner of the last checkout that are free. The neighborhood is not the best but for anybody to imply that isn't safe is crazy. Hello, you live in Philadelphia! Last but not least! You can always find a Hack here, for those unfamiliar with a hack it's bootleg taxi guys that you can pay a few extra bucks to take you home. They get permission from the employees and manager to work the store. You can usually spot them hanging out at the front with the security guard. Great prices for sustainable frozen filets of fish (wild caught salmon, tilapia, haddock, whiting, etc), as well as jumbo shrimp! You can also find cheap berries/fruit, and a surprising selection of cheeses and chocolates here. An interesting eclectic grocery store. And make sure you bring your cash or debit card - that's all they take. read more

I like this market,but paying for bags and having to bag my items up myself sucks. I still have to unbag them when I get home too. .

Being from Europe, I find grocery prices very high in the US. I know Aldi from home, and it helps me safe some money. Though, not everything is cheaper here than in other stores. E.g. fussili pasta, which is considered a specialty product at Aldi and is much more expensive than the cheapest fussili at Trader Joes. Also, I find most everything I need for everyday living, though there are few things I miss personally. E.g. there is no plain normal fat yogurt or half and half. Most dairy products are low or no fat, dont know why. The Aldi system is very efficient. Most stuff is still in bigger boxes where you take it out from. Checkout is also fast and efficient, nobody will put it into bags for you. I think that is perfect, I dont need a shopping experience for everyday grocery shopping. I want everything in the same place every time at a reasonable price. At least in Europe, Aldi is known to sell good quality. And this seems to be true here in the States also. So far, everything was always fresh and tasty. To sum it up, it is a great place to do my big weekly grocery shopping for me and my whole family. I always leave with a whole cart full of stuff. During opening hours, I dont think safety is an issue if you approach the shop from the east. read more

I went in today to check out what this place was all about. The cart deposit makes a lot of sense, but I didn't have a quarter so I couldn't get a cart -- which is lucky, since I had to carry whatever I bought on my bike. I ended up not actually buying anything, instead just browsing the selection. The store seems to be focused on processed and high-sugar foods, with an unimpressive selection of produce. The produce looked better than at most supermarkets, though, and was certainly cheaper. Everything else seemed pretty cheap, but there also didn't seem to be much wholesome food here, either. I think that for folks who eat the standard American diet, this place would be a step up (at least price-wise) from larger supermarkets. However, those who really want to save money and gain health might be better off looking to establishments where less processed food can be purchased. The area is pretty safe. I wouldn't be too worried about the comments about the danger of the area. A lot of white people just get scared when they see other folks around. I roll through here every day on my bicycle on my commute from the 'burbs to the city. read more

I'm really, reallllly happy I decided to take a walk over to Aldi today. I needed the last few ingredients to bake my super awesome cookies, and I didn't want to pay ridiculous Fresh Grocer prices and I've been disappointed with Supreme lately. So I figured the worst that could happen at Aldi's was that I'd be disappointed, but leave with a couple cheap things. Definitely exceeded my expectations. It was clean, and the cashier was actually friendly (do you hear that rude FG employee who makes me so uncomfortable that I want to use self checkout for 50 items?). I actually enjoy being able to take my reusable bags over to counter by the checkout to bag my own groceries. Aldi is mainly store brands, but for $22 I got everything I still needed for the cookies (butter, eggs for 78 CENTS!, milk, chocolate chips and raisins), as well as some breakfast and dinner staples to get me through the rest of the next week of finals. Some highlights: flour tortillas for 99cents, the eggs!, and the list goes on. I didn't buy any produce, although there was nothing offensive when I glanced over at the section. That's not of great importance to me though, because an added bonus to walking to Aldi is that I can manipulate my walk home so I walk right by my favorite produce truck/stand on 44th and Walnut. I'll be back at Aldi for my groceries for sure! read more

I wholeheartedly recommend everybody who goes to Fresh Grocer at 40th and Walnut to go to ALDI instead. The prices are more reasonable. The staff is friendly and honest. None of these is true for the Fresh Grocer staff. read more

I used to be a die-hard Giant fan and I never thought I would branch away from that, however, Aldi has really made me a believer! I remember the first time I went to Aldi I thought it was so silly how they got away with blatantly ripping off name brands. Instead of "Rice Crispy Treats" there were "Crispy Rice Treats" with nearly identical packaging. Aldi has really been evolving over the year that I've been faithfully shopping there. Every week there are new products and its exciting to try new things. (Although sad when you get hooked on a product and it disappears.) I have heard rumor that they are planning on going all organic, which is very exciting. Prices are unbeatable for the level of quality. They have just about everything you could need. The only reason I knocked it down a star is because the lines are often ridiculously long. They could stand to pay for a few more cashiers. It's also annoying that you have to pay for a shopping cart. It's somewhat annoying that you have to pay for plastic bags but also I totally support it because it encourages people to use reusable bags. I love this place! read more

My husband and I shop regularly at Aldi's. We also shop at the one on MacDade. You can't beat the values here. We get about 85% of our shopping done here and then go to another grocery store for "brand name" items that my family can't live without. It is a "no frills" store, but who cares? We both work really hard for our money and we are willing to give up some of the ambiance for saving money! As for the comments on safety; my husband and I are both white and have never felt bothered at all. People are people. You can encounter crime in ALL areas with ALL different types of people. It is wise to be aware of your surroundings at all times, whether you are in this parking lot, or in a suburb shopping at Wegman's. read more

We lived in the Philly burbs for almost fifteen years before a very smart friend told us that Aldi had ranked as one of the best grocery stores in the country. I'd never heard of it, but we googled to see if there was one around. Turned out we can get to an Aldi from City Ave in about 15 minutes, so we tried it out. I haven't seen prices this consistently low in decades. As at Trader Joe's, their parent company, there isn't infinite choice, but that's fine with us. Their store brands have a few clunkers, in our opinion, like the pesto and the Noodle Roni knock offs, but almost everything else is totally fine. Yes, you need to use a debit card. You also need to bring your own bags, but you should be doing that anyway. And yes you need to bring a quarter to borrow a cart, but you get it back when you return the cart, so what's the big deal? There are often kids or young men who want to help you with your bags for a tip, but you can always decline. We've been here a dozen times and never had a hint of a problem safety-wise. If you're looking to buy the basics and more, more cheaply than you'll find them anywhere else, this is the place. They don't have everything (gallons of skim milk, horseradish, dill relish, etc.), and they aren't going to consistently beat Produce Junction for fruits and veggies, but Aldi is now our go-to store.
