My favorite grocery store! Granted, they don't have all the selections like the bigger stores, but they have exactly what you need. Aldi was once my favorite store - but in the past several months the Aldi stores here in southeast Wisconsin have been severely understaffed. Additionally, one of Aldi's perennial weak points - being out of stock on popular items - has become even worse. Aldi has also begun cutting corners on certain products. One of my favorite Aldi products was a plastic containers of mixed salted nuts - the container had a nice screw-on lid to keep the contents fresh. Well that nice container is now a cheap plastic bag that doesn't seal well. And don't get me started on checkout - at times during the day, the *single* open checkout line will be 10-15 customers deep! I'm not waiting 30 minutes to check out. So help me send a message to ALDI corporate - if the checkout lines are too long fill your cart with ice cream and dairy and then leave it in the isle - corporate will figure it out after chucking spoiled dairy in the garbage! As a result I have found that WalMart must have sensed Aldi demise and have built several new WalMart stores with an expanded grocery offering that are comparable to Aldi - and yes, their mixed salted nuts come in a nice plastic container with a screw-on cap. read more

I love Aldis. It's my go to grocery store for almost everything. Sure I have to go to other grocery stores/ markets once in a while to stock up on some items, but Aldis is all I need for basic staple grocery items. I'm not sure why that one reviewer said they don't accept credit cards, that's not true I pay credit all the time. The one con, is that sometimes the lines are incredibly long, like down half the store (an entire aisle), but even then it's not that bad - most of the cashiers are very fast and efficient. Where else can you get a bag of pretzels or tortilla chips for 92 cents, or fake girl scout cookies (which are really good IMO) for $1-2 dollars per box depending on which type of cookie. The only produce I don't usually get there is mushrooms unless I'm cooking the same day, because those seem to go bad quickly. I also love how many dairy free milk options there are, lots of vegan/vegetarian meatless crumbles and meatballs, tofu and many other healthy options. I also enjoy their rotating aisle, which you can find all kinds of random seasonal things. For those that complain about having to pay for a plastic bag.. just saying there are such things as reusable tote bags and it's an incentive to not use plastic for the environment.. Also the whole idea is that at Aldis you bag your own stuff, and also return your own shopping cart. These reductions in staff is what allows these awesome low prices. I went to Target a couple weeks ago for some items, and I forgot how much "regular grocery stores" cost but man did it make me miss Aldis! This place definitely has some deals - I always leave having bought more than I intended!! The ambiance isn't all that stunning, it has the feel of an antiquated Schnucks, if you will, but it works for their minimalist approach. Aldi carries many items of their own brand, and then also many name-brand items that might not have sold so well in the traditional supermarkets. There are always surprise good deals/finds lurking around the shelves. Many things I have to avoid there, as in any store, the ding-dongs, burgers, shortening-laden gunk... But I love stocking up on my basics here, such as: nuts, raisins, (hormone free) eggs, organic soy milk, etc. The prices will beat your local store 9 times out of 10. Come with a budget and leave with everything you need. When I was a kid at an Aldi, it was obvious because we came back with off-brand cereals and maple sausage links. Now, Aldi has healthy options, vegan cheeses and meats, sushi grade tuna, healthy frozen food bites, amazing produce for cheap, AND sauces, seasonings and such for only a buck or 2?! This is a match made in heaven. While the veggies are seasonal, it's worth it to come in and see prices for mushrooms, cauliflower and carrots all about a half of the price at Supreme grocery or Fresh Grocer nearby. It is right off the 46th street train station so it's easy to get to, plus a parking lot if you need a lot. Bring a box or reusable bag, they're sustainable! Even their bread selection is double what I'm used to at an older Aldi. Went with 35$ and got enough fresh veggies, protein, and snacks to cook for myself for 2 weeks with some options and variety. read more

I was so excited to shop here after hearing about the excellent prices for quality of food. Suffice to say my expectations were not met and I was very disappointed by some of the products I purchased. For example, I bought a bag of potatoes that looked fine and when I opened it at home realized that more than half of them were soft and had sprouted! I also bought ginger and realized that its flesh was molding and had green fuzz growing (yuck! it must've been on the shelf for quite a while for ginger to go bad) when I opened it as soon as I got home. After this experience, I don't think I will come back here to buy produce, unless I can find the time and patience to feel and inspect every product from every angle to make sure it is fresh before tossing it into my cart. What I liked about Aldi though was their selection of German chocolates (so cool!) and prepackaged foods. The frozen food selection was also good. Overall, the prices are very reasonable here but keep in mind that you may risk product quality. Personally, I would rather shop somewhere else that isn't as "risky" as I think it would save me more time and money (avoid wasteful purchases) in the long run. read more

I love this store, but it could be because I'm nostalgic about my years in Germany. I usually buy my meats at DiBrunos or Wholefoods Market, but I recently discovered Aldi on Market and 46st, right on the Septa stop, and decided to shop there so I can feel in Europe again. It's great! I bough fresh veggies and couple of stakes: a rib eye and NY steak.. This has been my go to market but I've been consistently disappointed since they reopened after renovations. I initially figured my displeasure was due to curve in reopening. Issues that this Aldi's seems to has that it previously didn't: * Consistently understaffed - I was assuming that if you made the store larger, added more items you would potentially expect a greater crowd and adjust accordingly. Just seems like there's only two people working no matter when you go. This makes for long checkout lines and rarely any assistance in the back * Consistently understocked - When you go to a market and can't expect to find typical fresh/frozen items such as spinach, bananas, avocados, strawberries on a consecutive basis it's problematic. I'm not sure what leads to the shortages here but if you're making your way here only to have to spend the time and energy to go to ANOTHER market it kind of defeats the purpose. * Items with missing expiration dates/dates expire same day (no mark down) - I actually caught a worker butting out tomato wraps and went to grab one and noticed it didn't have a date. I asked the worker about it who seemed to have an attitude and said well you see me putting them out now so let's just say it expires like a week from now! Umm, that's not how it works. * Spoiled items- you have to evaluate the fresh items here with an amount of attention that I find to be really extreme. Since reopening, I have bought grapes, grape tomatoes and strawberries that APPEARED fresh only to get them home and actually open the package and find rotting fruit within the container. Although the prices were cheap, Aldi used to have great quality. Once again, not sure what the issue is but extremely disappointing to spend money on food that has to go directly into the trash. There was also an instance when I checked out and paid for 5 bags and the attendant failed to tell me that hey were completely out of plastic bags. Since I walk to the market obviously I couldn't carry my items in brown bags with no handles. I had to expense an Uber ride home which is once again - just an extreme inconvenience like what market runs out of shopping bags. All of this to say since I've noticed all of the above I've been shopping at more frequently at Fresh Grocer for items. I really hope Aldi improves because I used to really ride or die for this chain. Crazy how pre-renovations seemingly had none of these issues! For a couple of years, I didn't even know Aldi was here, but I wish I had. Aldi is a large supermarket with a pretty good selection of various foods. Great prices on frozen fish, ice cream, etc. We got some pretty good jars of mustard and sauerkraut at very reasonable prices. I also got the best bag of avocados here last summer, which ripened really well. Remember to come prepared with your own sustainable shopping bags. read more

I was so excited when I realized that I signed a lease so close to an Aldi location, but after 2 trips there, I can't see myself coming back unless there's a really spectacular seasonal home item on sale. The first time I was there, the cashier forgot to ring up one of my items that I literally spoke to her about while she was ringing me up they chased me back into store. It's my second trip. My first visit was by accident last week, I was so pleased, I drove back. It's in W. Philly, I live by Art Museum. About 15 min I'm willing to drive for the selection & savings. I recently read an article in the Huffington Post explaining the German brand & why the names on the boxes seemed "off". I was staunchly against Aldi but now I understand how the brand works & how it's the same food as Trader Joe's & some major brands. Their crispy rice squares are actually Chex (apparently)! & they do actually carry name brand products on personal care products. I'm a new convert. Can't wait for the old Bottom Dollar in my neighborhood to reopen as Aldi. Then I can walk there. Yay. Note: no cc but DEBIT cards work. No checks. Bring ur bags or pay for them. First off, did someone actually claim you are "more likely to get robbed here than not?" What?? When I look at the police crime maps for the past few years, nothing of the sort has ever happened here, not a single robbery, car break-in, etc. I'm left to assume this person is scared merely by the presence of people that don't look like her. Dispensing with the subtle racism of the occasional yelper, as mentioned, Aldi owns Trader Joes, and is based in Germany, so the set up is much more like a European grocery. This means bring your own bag, put a deposit on the cart, etc. For a discount market, there is a surprising number of organic and fresh produce, as well as some snacks from Germany you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere. It's friendly, though it gets pretty crowded on the weekends, and thus less so. Good stuff. read more

Yes! I wrote a long and extended review for Aldi months ago, but it was deleted and somehow I couldn't figure out how to successfully add a business to Yelp. But that aside,... Aldi evokes some major nostalgia for me, since I used to shop there growing up in Germany (yeah, even at age 5 and subsequent visits since, I love grocery stores). Aldi is apparently owned by the same people in charge of Trader Joe's, so the concept is similar-- overstocks repackaged as the store's own label(s), and you won't find everything you're looking for. I've never gotten a dud here, and while there is a lot of overly-processed junk, I've amassed quite a collection of staples (oats, cereal, giant bags of frozen strawberries, lemon juice, and awesome 99 cent tortilla chips). Sometimes, I luck out and find my favorite German chocolate here-- Moser Roth (I think), the dark chocolate almond orange kind. Seriously, Aldi is worth checking out for their decent stock of European chocolate alone, not to mention the occasional great deals on produce (last week, I scored avocados for a buck each!) Yes, the lines are long, and that might be the only factor that subtracts a star for me. It would seem simple to just hire more cashiers, but I guess that's an unfortunate part of the cost-savings model that Aldi runs on. I don't actually mind the long lines as much, considering the bargains I'm receiving in return. I wish they had more natural stuff, but their Fit and Active brand is pretty decent, and they have the cheapest raw almonds I've found. Beware the kids outside begging for your cart quarter-- lately I just bring canvas bags and take more frequent trips since I have to walk anyway. More people need to be aware of Aldi. Give it a try! You might find yourself addicted to the pseudo-European jams and La Mas Rica Mexican loot... P.S.- Debit cards and cash only. read more

I'm an Aldi lifer now that I've seen the (fluorescent) light. Here's why: -Good produce for cheap -KEFIR! Blueberry and Strawberry -Cheap raw nuts -Staples like tomato paste for .39 cents. -Awesome frozen vegetables -Artisan cheeses are affordable ( because I like my cheese) -Organic and gluten free goods; if that's your thing It's a great place for staples. While some produce items are not so good... I just don't buy those. Being a person that likes to froof store bought items anyway... I love that I can shop here on my very limited budget ( fiance and I are both students). Aldi makes my culinary dreams come true. On the safety part: I'm a Philly transport from the Kansas and haven't had a single altercation at this location. This part of the city is what's considered 'borderline' as it is a few blocks away from sketchy areas. But that's not unlike MOST parts of this city. Just be smart. Keep your eyes up and buy your groceries. There's security guard right inside the door, as well. Staff is amiable and I've even made buds with a few customers; " Girl, those frozen veggies are on sale for .69 cents!! Better go get ya some." :) If you go into a place acting paranoid... you'll seem paranoid? Maybe even a little 'bougie'. I love Aldi and have shopped here since I moved to Philadelphia in 2012. I drive to Aldi from Fairmount to shop here. The prices are unbeatable and you don't have to worry about whether something is on sale or not-all the prices are good. The store is safe despite the previous reviews. They even have a security guard! I've never felt unsafe. My favorite products are the European chocolates! They are very good quality, comparable to or better than Lindt and much cheaper. I also love the raw nuts, cereal, oatmeal, eggs, yogurt, bread (12 grain or 100% whole wheat bread for under $2 a loaf), ice cream, salsa, pasta, diced tomatoes, frozen fish, cheeses (feta, blue, etc). The seasonal products are great, too (duck for $2.50 a pound!). I really love this store! read more

I like this store! The prices are right and the selection is excellent for non-perishables and frozen goods. Eggs for .95, paper towels .65, DiGiorno-type pizza, 3.50, 18 popcicles, 2.99, extra virgin olive oil, 4.50 and so on... Produce is their weak point. They don't have much of it and it's overpriced. Once in a while you will find bizarre deals like quarts of blueberries for 1.50... but not too often. It does look nice though, it's not spoiled and home to fruit flies. The store is very crowded. Expect long lines and slow movement. You have to bag your own groceries. They have paper bags, sell reusable bags, or will give you a box if you have one. I recommend bringing your own bag. One thing I don't get is that they charge a quarter for you to use a shopping cart. However, you can bring your own cart and use that in the store. You may want to anyway because their shopping carts are the size of small cars and are unwieldy and impractical if you are only getting a few items. The bottom line - check it out, it's fun and you will save a lot on your groceries. Great for staples and basics! read more

But the location is not a safe one (it is on Market between 46th and 47th), and the choices (of groery items) are meager. Plus there is always a 20 minute line for the checkout, you pay extra for plastic bags, and they don't accept credit cards! Umm, none of the other reviewers so far mentioned that visitors to this lovely Aldi's are more likely to get held up and/or harassed than not. This is further north and west (i.e. closer to some serious danger) than the Supreme Supermarket at 43rd and Walnut, which is a little dodgy already. I did shop there once a little over a year ago. Forget talking about the ambiance and ghettoness of charging a quarter to use the shopping carts. You are on the cusp of an actual ghetto here. Feeling uneasy at night is one thing, but feeling uneasy in the middle of the day on a weekend is another. My husband and I ran back home once we got our goods and never went back. It's cheap, but not cheap enough to risk my life. If you have to try it, proceed with caution. read more

Aldi is a bit of a quirky place. There are things I love about, some which I am not so crazy about. I recently learned Aldi is the largest chain in Germany, and this is likely owned by one of the two Aldi brothers, who had a break up some time ago and created Aldi Sud (South) and Aldi Nord (North). I believe this one is Aldi South. I thought this was an interesting little fact. So, back to Aldi. To me, it's like a poor man's Trader Joe's. They have great prices and a lot of products you can find in your typical supermarket, but not exactly as expansive and, as a result, some things you would need just are not at Aldi's. It's more of a compliment to your regular supermarket than it is a replacement. Personally, I prefer one stop shopping. On the good side, their prices are great. Even the very reasonably priced market in our neighborhood doesn't compete. They do not provide bags unless you pay a per bag fee. The idea is to encourage you to bring your own. Not a bad idea, but not always a convenient option. To prevent theft of their shopping carts, you need a quarter to get one out. For me, this sucks, since I don' always carry change. They have this island like space that rotates some interesting items. I have seen garden hoses, inflatable pools, BBQ grills, and handicap toilet seats, among other items, have stints in this area. If they have something you want, it's a major score, because you cannot beat their prices. But, it's hardly reliable, since they are changing what they carry in this section every few weeks. It can be fun or cool to visit Aldi every once in awhile, but it requires additional planning and more for those who enjoy shopping, than it is for those who enjoy getting shopping done. read more

They don't enforce COVID precautions in the least. On a day where over 1k new cases were confirmed in the city - Several customers were walking around inside without masks on, walking by the staff, and even though the staff saw these people, none of them even bothered asking the customers to put a mask on. They were allowed to walk around inside maskless. Almost every staff member had their mask pulled down, exposing their noses. (The only exception being the man watching the door.). One staff member on the floor had their mask pulled down entirely. read more

I am a regular at this Aldi and shop there just about every week. They have the best chocolate! And trust me, I'm a bit of a chocolate snob (I never eat Hershey's unless it's a gift). Love that I can get almond milk here for $2.50 and they have lactose-free milk for $2.79. The Fit&Active brand products are inexpensive and help me eat healthier. Produce is always fresh and lasts a while in the refrigerator. I've been shopping here for over a year and have not had any problems with their products. I even bought a frozen pizza (extra large for $5.99) that was better than delivery pizza that costs 3 times at much. On top of all this, I get good customer service, which I thought was non-existent at Philly grocery stores. Since I found Aldi, I have stopped shopping at Fresh Grocer and Supreme, except occasionally for things Aldi doesn't carry. This is my go-to neighborhood Aldi! I live in west philly and having this so close by is a great convenience. My favorite thing is the spacious parking lot and how there's always room to park. Overall the aldi is stocked up for the most part and if I can't find something, the employees have always been helpful in directing me to the product I need. ALDI is a pretty cool grocery store with reasonable price. Cereal, snacks, eggs, as well as frozen food are much cheaper comparing with other grocery stores such as traderjoe or whole foods. Fresh vegetables and meat are kinda pricey. I truly love the chocolate Choceur in Aldi and strongly recommend the chestnut milk chocolate Choceur. Remember to bring your own shopping bag. The cashier did not greet me or make eye contact with me and was talking to another cashier the entire time. We probably only exchanged a few words which was how much I owed. After that I pushed my cart out to return it, near the front door, the security guard mumbled something. I asked her to repeat and she said the carts go outside. I said okay thank you.
