I made our reservations online, easy peasy. The drive took about 45 minutes from New Orleans and it was easy to find with GPS. There is plenty of places to park, buckets are provided and they start promptly at 8:00am. If you want blackberries, arrive early! Blueberries are plentiful! We had 2 adults, a 12 year old and a 2 year old. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we came back 2 weeks later. We picked for about 2 hours, took a break and had a picnic at one of the picnic tables provided. We fed horses with biscuits that the farm has on hand, for free. Then we picked for a little longer. While there, we genuinely felt welcome by the owner and his daughter who were sweet and happy to share their bounty. We took home blackberries, zucchini, peppers, beans, honey, a ton of blueberries and priceless memories. We look forward to next year!

They had some small satsumas (also in short supply this year). But the standouts were fall crop tomatoes and a gorgeous large cauliflower. The tomatoes were perfect for Thanksgiving day and I made a caprese salad for the table. And I roasted the cauliflower with olive oil, salt, pepper and parmesan... then dressed with a little lemon juice and parsley. DELICiOUS! I did not find my kumquats and the prices were higher than I expected but the quality was excellent so I'm not complaining. Small stand just before the Belle Chasse Bridge in a shell lot!

I'm really VERY sad to have learned that Becnel Farm will be closing their Plaquemines Parish…read moreroadside farm produce stands and also end their farming. This farm has been operating in their current location since 1850. There simply isn't anything that will be able to replace the experience you could have here not to mention nowhere else seems to have boiled peanuts anywhere close to as good as the ones they offered here. This location of their roadside farm produce stand is probably the nearest of the several Becnel fruit stands/markets to the actual farm as it is pretty much on the farm with all the citrus trees around it. They have some general selection of fresh produce and locally produced food items as the other locations but it is nice to see where a lot of the citrus and other produce originates from. This is a nice little road trip to take and see some of the rural areas outside of the urban spaces of Greater New Orleans. I've had the privilege of having all my lifetime 'til now being able to enjoy Becnel farms produce stands and I don't know how to even envision a future where they no longer exist. I've gone through the loss of so MANY of the wonderful and unique things the New Orleans area offered for so many generations that my heart grows heavier with each loss of the wonderous things that are now gone with the wind & tragically ain't dere no more...

We also tried the gator balls - not my fave (tasted like maybe there was crawfish or crab mixed in) but ok.

There's a bunch of fresh fruit and vegetables for sale as well, and some nice decor for the home and all. Just looking for a snack, a real bite to eat, fresh produce for the house, this is a good spot for sure. I finally decided to try some of their real food so I called in a shrimp poboy and fries. I must say the shrimp poboy is definitely up there with the best I've ever had. They had a great amount of mayo, and the lettuce and tomato were fresh from a garden you can tell which made the sandwich much better than going to a chain restaurant or something of that sort. Poboy is pretty big with plenty of shrimp, fried perfectly, great bread selection too. Now the fries...the saltiest fries I've ever had in my life. You can zoom in on the picture and count every grain of salt on each French fry. I love salty foods but I couldn't even handle these fries. Otherwise, this would've been a perfect 10/10 meal. It was $21 with a large fountain drink. I will definitely be back for more food.

The Covington Farmer's Market is the place to go if you want farm fresh produce, meats, seafood,…read moreand craft food items. Everyone knows that the fresher your food is, the better it tastes. Not only do you get extremely fresh items, you're able to meet the farmer who raised the animals and grew the vegetables you're buying. In my opinion, this is the best farmers market within driving distance of New Orleans. Here are the reasons why: Proximity to farms - Many people may not know this, but the Northshore is home to many different types of farms. Because Covington is close to the farm, you will get the freshest possible items. Variety - Whether you eat meat, are a vegetarian, or even a pescetarian, there will be something for you at this market. I particularly like the farm fresh meats. On my last visit I spoke with a cattle farmer who was selling his wares. His offer of a processed half or full cow seemed highly desirable, but I had nowhere to store that much meat. I did buy some of his ground beef which was better than anything I have sampled before, including from fancy stores. There are also numerous vendors selling products they made locally. As Jennifer B. mentioned, the Italian cookie stand is a must visit. Besides amazing products, the guys who run the stand are very friendly and entertaining characters. If you have kids make sure you pick up one of their cookies in the shape of popular cartoon characters. Besides all the food, there are also several plant vendors each week. I don't know much about plants, but they had quite the variety. I am a big fan of this market, and think you will be too.

I ran across this cute little market called Rouses Market and I went in to grab some water. It's the cutest little market servicing the residential portion of the French Quarter and they have just about everything you would have in a typical bodega-style corner market. While looking for the water I ran across the famous Sno-Balls I kept hearing about in New Orleans and I had to grab one. The employees in the market were very friendly and showed me where I could grab my water as well and after paying for my two items I was on my way. Quick and easy. For those who haven't had a Sno-Ball in New Orleans-they are just wonderful and really do the trick to cool someone down when that heat and humidity team up to wear a person out. I really enjoyed it and wished I had found this market earlier in my trip as I'm sure I would've went to this great corner market more than once. Great little market.

This location was historically an open-air market, but was completely renovated with overhead doors that can be closed in inclement weather. They have more space, and more pleasant shopping conditions (especially during summer). Southside Produce isn't a farmers market, but they do sell local produce whenever available. When I was in today, they were showcasing local cauliflower, but also had some beautiful fresh Brussel Sprouts from a farm in California. Their fresh produce is always fresh and high quality regardless of its source. Another amazing area they have is the extensive frozen produce aisle. These include virtually every type of frozen vegetable and fruit. I also noted a selection of local meat products in the coolers, these included quite the selection of sausages! In the preserved products, Southside also has you covered. They have their own brand of pickled, jellied, and preserved foods of all sorts. They also sell other name brands. They have syrups and oils, and other similar products. This is an area that's expanded over the years, and is now quite extensive. Then there are the other products that one can find there. These include things like a significant selection of dried beans and rice, local bread products from a number of bakeries, and cypress furniture. In the right season, you can buy fruit trees to plant in your yard or garden. In all seasons, I recommend Southside as a great place to buy healthy and interesting houseplants. I am always amazed by their selection. Service is always great as well. Normally, one need only take their selections to the counter in the center to be rung up. Their registers accept all modern forms of payment including tap to pay (min $4 on credit cards though). If you need any other help, they will be glad to provide it. Everyone seems cheerful and pleasant. I've been going to Southside Produce for decades now. I felt it was overdue to write a review. Tucked inside is their bánh mì spot--the Vietnamese po-boy--and baby... it's a staple. Open daily, and you'll usually catch the same sweet older woman back there faithfully whipping out sandwiches like clockwork. It's something about that consistency and care that just hits different. They're under new management now and the space got a little upgrade, so I'm not sure if everything is exactly the same menu-wise, but my go-to has always been the one with meatballs--and I ALWAYS add extra pâté. That pâté? Don't skip it. The bread is exactly what it needs to be. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside... not too hard, not too soft. Perfect balance. Prices went up just a little, but honestly? For about $7, you're getting a full, loaded sandwich that eats like a meal and then some. Still one of my favorite quick eats. Every time I'm in there, I'm grabbing one.
