I've recently communicated with Aldi Corporate and the Regional Manager about several rude and condescending experiences I've had with associates and management at this location. While the brand offers fantastic value on certain items, if you are repeatedly charged the WRONG PRICE for items, the value goes down and, in some cases, becomes a CON and not a PRO.
Oh, ask for a price check, you say? Tried that. Still was charged the incorrect price. Even had to take a photo of the signage in the store to get a refund.
Just Recently I had to parry back and forth over a .99 half gallon of milk that I was being charged $1.49 and then $1.37 for. The manager/supervisor at the time slammed her clipboard down on a chair, stomped to the register to assist with the price override, and was probably no more than 5" away from physically walking into me, a customer, at the register. Without batting an eye, an excuse me, I'm sorry, pardon me, good morning, NOTHING! She continued to stomp up to the register and angrily work on the register to provide the price override. Not a single word to me, like maybe a "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I apologize for the mistake in our system, thank you for your patience, thank you for waiting, THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING AT ALDI"------you guessed it:::::NOTHING. When all was said and done, she stomped off.
We lived in Memphis, TN for a year. People treat each other pretty terribly there. We had low expectations when we went shopping in Memphis.
But this is Jonesboro, aka Sleepy Hollow. The people here are gems. They are absolutely, hands-down, some of the best people we've ever known. And guess what? Our awesome little town has THREE Wal*Marts, a Kroger super store, and lots of little small-town grocery stores. ALDI has a LOT of competition. Can they really afford to treat customers like they are idiots? Do customers really put up with this kind of treatment around here?
One experience like this is probably an aberration; you can chalk it up to a bad day. Two experiences like this indicate that this kind of attitude is accepted and OK and is probably a reflection of leadership. Which brings me around to this Yelp review.
I just got off of the phone with Jody at Aldi in corporate (Batavia, IL). She was pretty super. She got my email. She listened. She reflected. She apologized. She thanked me for my business and my loyalty to the brand. She advised next steps. One of which was a call from the regional manager, Sarah. Jody closed the call with an offer for a $5 gift card for my troubles and I told her a $20 gift card would go a long way. She said it would be up to the discretion of the regional manager.
5 minutes later, Sarah is calling me to apologize and tell me that this is not the way they are supposed to Customer Service at this store and she will speak with the associates and managers of this Aldi. And before I know it, she is closing the call.
I ask, "That's it?" She asks if there is something else she can help me with, and I told her no--if that's it for you, then that's it for me as well.
I didn't send my complaint to corporate in the hopes of getting a gift card. I wanted them to know that I was unhappy with the service I received and hopefully they would be able to step in to make corrections as they deemed necessary. I didn't ask for a gift card: one was offered to me. Only then did I did ask for what I felt was fair compensation for the time and inconvenience these experiences caused. What's $20 to a store that has market value of $56 BILLION?
I don't know about the rest of the customers that go to Aldi, but I am the CFO of my household. My time (over an hour at this point) is worth more than $5/hr. $20 is nothing to Aldi, and would certainly go a long way in repairing the broken trust and unpleasant experiences I've had with their brand.
If I hear from them again, l'll be sure to update my review, but for now, I'm heading to Wal*Mart, or Harp's, or Kroger, or the Truck Patch. I can count on friendly faces at Kroger, Harp's and The Truck Patch consistently, and Wal*Mart, well, you never know what you'll get there as far as attitude, but consistent prices bring me back time and again. read more
