You have two choices in this immediate area for quick market essential needs: Sainsbury's Local or…read moreTesco Express located just nearly across the street. Personally, I'm a much bigger fan of the latter option, and here's why: 1. Because it's so high trafficked, this store is pretty dirty 2. The shelves always seem like they need to be stocked 3. It's a bizarre layout because it's such a small space 4. The queue here - as others have mentioned - is frustrating and confusing; who's actually in line?! It's hard to tell when it snakes down into the aisles Really, you'll find similar things at both places, so it's really just a matter of preference!

It's not exactly the first place you'd look for a Primark, a Lidl or a Wilkinsons (sadly, as I absolutely love a good Primark). But what should the less wealthy of us need a supermarket which isn't as elusive as Marks and Spencer and not as pricey as Waitrose? Sainsbury's local on Marmouth Street is a tiny supermarket which is an ideal one-stop shop for your basic essentials. The range of items on sale here is pretty limited, but when you're looking for reasonably priced goods like tea, coffee, bread and milk - this is the first place I head. And, because it's a Sainsbury's LOCAL the service is quick so there's no frustrating queues in sight.

Tesco's quest for world domination continues to go from strength to strength with their new Tesco…read moreExtra store in Bradley Stoke, which opened in October 2008. The supermarket is so big that they have built a whole 'town centre', which incorporates various stand-alone shops including Carphone Warehouse, O2, a hairdressers, a Shoe Zone, and food stores including KFC, Greggs and a Costa Coffee. Each of the stand-alone stores is relatively small and totally dwarfed by the Tesco itself, which has to be the biggest I've ever seen. It's split across two floors and will sell you everything from Dulux paint to halloween masks to iPods to dishwashers to hardback books to ready-roasted chickens to photo albums. The aisle arrangement is a bit disorientating at first, and certain items are now where you might normally have expected them to be- the fruit & veg isn't at the front of the store, the bread is tucked away in one corner. Some of the aisles don't line up which I think is a design flaw as it means there isn't one obvious path around the store, resulting in lots of colliding trolleys in busy periods. Unlike some people I have nothing against Tesco and it's going to be convenient for people in Bradley Stoke to have so much readily available to buy there. It isn't always the cheapest supermarket for all items but it's very competitive and does the job.

However as this place is so huge you'll probably still find what you are looking for. Since I've lived in Oxford I've come here about a dozen or so times. We tend to try and stick to mid evening as the crowds die down a bit and they are not quite into their horrible restocking mode. Generally you can find fresh products and a wide selection of near everything (do not come to this Tescos if you are looking for home goods/ electronics/ etc). The prices as it is Tescos are decent. The staff are generally friendly as long as you're not getting the end of shift crowd. PROS: Large selection Good quantity of stock Price CONS: Gets ultra busy Leftover stock can be of bad quality Other side of the ring road.

It's got a huge range of items, although no adult clothing (other than underwear) or much in the way of electronics/media/toys, unlike even bigger stores. For groceries, though, it's got a lot to offer. Fruit and veg are of good quality and usually well-stocked. The deli and fresh fish counters offer a lot of choice, and they even have a large 'Polish food' section. They have two 'car trolleys' which amuse small (and big) kids greatly, and make the shopping trip easier with children who are too big for the trolley seats but too small to walk all the way around without whining. Staff are friendly and helpful, and offers on food are good value.
