The Simply Nature line has really impressed me.
    Caity T.

I think Sue K. spelled it out best in saying that you either are, or are not, an Aldi shopper. This is what a grocery store looks like when it's run by a team of accountants with a customer service flair. BUDGET FRIENDLY - You can get a heck of a deal. It is cheap, but at the expense of the Wegmans ooh and aaah factor. Rent your cart for a quarter. Bring your own bags and bag the food. Buy knock-off store brands like "Baker's Corner" instead of Betty Crocker. Grab the products off of their pallets instead of neatly stocked shelves. Know that some items are just for the week and might not be there next time you shop. But WHAT A DEAL! No sarcasm. HEALTHY OPTIONS: There's a line called "Simply Nature" that doesn't have artificial colors or flavors and steers clear of unnecessary artificial additives. Unlike other brands that invoke "nature" and "natural" in their labeling, reading the ingredients on these products gives me warm fuzzies. One of my toddlers gets sick if he eats artificial dyes and additives, so finding this line has been great. The unsweetened applesauce, tortilla chips, and salsa for this line is a snack time staple in our house. The organic, free range chicken broth is another cooking staple. WELL-PRICED MEATS: Full disclosure, I prefer to buy meat like a hippie. Free range, animals fed a vegetarian diet, locally sourced, organic. Aldi is not the place for that. They do have the organic, free range chicken broth in boxes, but that's all I've seen. Go to Mom's Organic Market two shops over for organic stuff. BUT when I cook for a large group, which happens a few times each month, that's too expensive. So what you get at Aldi will fit the bill on price, but I sort of cringe a little thinking of the conditions those animals lived and died in. That said, everything has tasted fresh. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED: They stand by their guarantee. I promise this is experience was an exception, but recently we got some ribs for Sunday dinner (which were amazing and delicious the two other times, I swear) that we refrigerated for 3 days and when we opened it for dinner on the "use-by" date, it STUNK to high heaven. We took it back to Aldi and the manager not only refunded it, but comped the chicken we were going to buy on that shopping trip, too. I will keep coming here as a first stop. Things that I can't buy here I get either at Mom's Organic, Safeway (on Fairwood), or Costco in Woodmore, depending on the item and the quantity needed. But Aldi will always be the first stop.

I needed some ingredients and was in the same shopping center so rather than head over to the named places one traffic light down I thought I would give Aldi a try... What was I thinking?? In a vain search for asparagus I entered and began to wander what looked like a distant cousin of a Sam's Wholesale Club... kinda. They have items arranged for bulk sale but also have smaller sized veggies and some frozen food. But no real rhyme or reason to the consistency of what they carry. Next time, head to the supermarket and get what you need. This place was just not for me. "The Good" - Nothing really good to comment on... "The Meh" - Nothing really meh to comment on... "The Bad" - The poor cashier seemed to be the only person in the place and could not really handle the multitasking involved in her position. - The asparagus that I did find had fruit flies inside of the cellophane packaging ... not dead ones mind you, but actual flies flying inside. Now this may seem like a sign of freshness, but they were put down and your favorite bald guy left the building. I am cool with farmers market and having wildlife land, pollinate and even steal some of the food I am going to eat but when there are flies trapped in a tomb of asparagus ... Well, thats when I draw the line. and yes.... I did give them a second chance.

    Fresh cheap fruit in December!!

All I can say is Come here if you'd like to save money on groceries! We visited family this Memorial Day weekend and saw an Aldi. We love the ones in NJ so figured we would see if anything changed out of state! NAH!!!! It's the same hahahaha and still great in MD! We picked up some chips, goodies and grilling utensils. The price was frozen shrimp was better than NJ though! Oh one last thing.... Only cash and debit accepted and I believe EBT cards - sorry folks no credit cards. So yea stop in and get your groceries and save some dough folks

I can always get my regular selection here.

They just did an expansion of the store making more space for product placement & customers to roam. I love the open market feel. Staff...always friendly professional. I could have a bad day and coming here instantly cheers me up. Prices... health costs money but copays cost more. You choose. Parking... decent. The turnover is quick and I've never had to wait to park. People are usually in & out. Issues... the only herbs they sell is cilantro. I'm ok with that (mostly). But I really wish they had mint & basil. They are closed during winter. Makes sense but... Those are the longest 4 months for me.

I love getting my seasonal produce from there because it is so fresh and flavorful. They also have locally sourced baked goods, jams, spices, and candies. The plant selection is also unreal. They have about 8 greenhouses all filled with different plants. Feels like walking through a local garden rather than a nursery. A plus is also that they usually have a food truck on the weekends. The day I went was Mikes Gelato.

The kimchee is either cabbage and cucumber, and comes in small (a little bigger than a deck of cards $3) or large (the size of a day planner, approx 8.5"x5" $6) Plus, the couple who runs the place is so nice and helpful, and super quick! Sometimes the lady gives me a sample of freshly made kimchee if she's cooking in the back which is mmm :) And the bulgogi ($6/lb I believe) is amazing. Foolproof, and an easy way to pretend that you're an impressive cook. These guys are the first produce section inside when you're coming to Eastern Market from the metro. They always have beautiful displays of a good selection of fruits and veggies (prices are a little on the steeper side in general, but that's Eastern Market for you). I usually swing by here if I need a last minute lemon/garlic/parsnip/leek/etc after work, but I usually shy away from it on weekends when it's packed. Also, veggies/fruits in season are reasonably priced here and better quality than what you would find at Harris Teeter or Safeway. They also have a mini-grocery with staples and sauces. If you have no car and can't get out to H mart or Wegman's, this place has a good selection of Asian cooking sauces. Lentils were $3/bag here though, so I would stay away from other cheap staples unless absolutely necessary. Tip: Make sure to bring your reusable bag so they don't charge that new DC bag tax (they're strict at this place). Yes, you will get a banana and be expected to either hold it or bring your own bag. Location: the most Southern end of the South Hall. Also labeled as Paik's produce, and right next to Fine Sweet Shop.

We had spent 30 minutes wandering the market but quickly realized what a terrible idea that is on an empty stomach. After selecting a few stalks of their crisp, red rhubarb, while at the register we began eying the large, fresh-looking to-go containers of bibimbap, including a big scoop of white rice and a wide array of sauteed and fresh vegetables - one came with tofu (my selection) and the other option with beef (my husband's choice). Each lunch portion was $6.99. Both were delicious and refreshing. The accompanying chili paste had just the right amount of heat. We both finished our entire meals (and one fresh-squeeze raspberry lemonade from another vendor outside) sitting in the shade in the small square out back. Exactly what I was looking for for Saturday lunch.
