The Salton Sea has been on my radar for a while. I mentioned it to a few people and they never said anything. It was not until I got here and started posting on IG that people decided to warn me. Telling me things about the people here, warning me about safety. A little late I think. You should of told me before. It's like a freaking Zombie Apocalypse here. Such a ghost town packed with abandoned buildings and buildings people call home. I know people live here but I only saw a handful of people outside. Lots of streets named after a variety of California beaches like Zuma, Newport, Pismo. Pretty neat. I just drove up and down these lost back streets hoping my exhaust was not going to pull people out of hiding. I guess this used to be a tourist attraction back in the day. But now it's just tons of dead fish, plants, trees here and things that make you go hmmmmmm. Since I am your friend I am going to warn you. Don't come here alone. If you were to get hurt nobody would hear you scream. If they did hear you scream I doubt they would help you. Nobody would find your car either. You would just disappear into the nothing that is here. I had my dog with me and some other accessories just in case. I got out of my car in 30 second increments and kept my doors locked. However that wouldn't stop anyone from jumping out of nowhere and barricading my car. The roads here are dirty. I had just washed my car and once I got home I had to wash it again. The roads messed up my tire pressure too. I wasn't happy. Anyways don't come alone and don't talk to anyone or look at anyone and you will be good. It's a fun place and mission accomplished taking car pictures.

Recently, it finally came true. When you finally get your sights on it, it's more unreal. The lake is about 15 by 35 miles at its widest and longest. So, it's HUGE, and there's a hell of a lot of water. Sure, it's getting smaller, but still. If you go, you should decide to go on the West or East side...because it's very far to go all around. My mom and I went east, but I think there's more to see on the west side (which has Salton City, Desert Shores, Salton Sea Beach). What we did see was a few "campgrounds", former structures, and the highlight -- Bombay Beach, an little town with some artistic endeavors, but mostly low income and off-grid living. It's just not healthy to live nearby this. It has a little market and an old motel, the Ski Inn, that is now a coffee shop and dive bar. It wasn't very smelly on a 75 degree day, but I'm sure it is in the heat of summer. It's both marvelous and a engineering disaster. I asked Siri a million things while driving, but I'm left with more questions than answers.

I…read morewent here early May so it was extremely hot, even though I reached the trailhead around 9am. The drive to the parking lot was a little weird because after you get off the freeway, there is a dirt road for about 1.5-2 miles on which there were a lot of signs that said "no vehicles allowed" and "foot traffic only" so I wasn't sure if I should be driving. Once k got there, there were other cars parked too so my assumption is that those signs are applicable only during some seasons. The parking lot looks flat but you can see to trail once you start walking towards the canyon. The hike was really nice, it was definitely more of a walk rather than any uphills. It can get pretty hot so starting early in the summer can be advantageous.

We decided to visit the Slot Canyon during our Borrego Spring trip. Although it doesn't compare to…read morethe slot canyon views in Arizona or Utah, it was picturesque. The slots were fairly easy to navigate except for a few areas where you had to climb down or squeeze through narrow openings. You can also take the trail above the canyon which gives you panoramic views of the desert. There are 2 bathrooms but no sinks in the parking lot. Most cars can get to the parking lot but it's quite dusty. Come prepared with some water, snack, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. It's $10 per day to visit the park. It's an honor system where you fill out the form, drop off the cash in box, and leave the parking pass on your dashboard. The one negative and reason for removing a star is the poor signage on the trail and how to get into the slots. When we went, there were only 2 other families but the signs were not clear which direction to go into the canyon or even back to the parking lot so we ended up taking a much longer and harder route than needed.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2…read morenights in one of the RVs and took a beginner tennis clinic and private lesson with their fantastic tennis pro. He was a pleasure to work with and a skilled teacher. The RV was clean, attractive, and comfortable (excellent mattress), and is separated enough from other trailers and the rest of the facility to feel sufficiently private. The tennis courts are well maintained, and the pool, hot tub, and showers are clean. There's also a games area in the back with bocce, darts, cornhole, etc. The Courts changed hands in 2018 and the new owners are doing a wonderful job updating the look and function to attract a younger clientele from out of town, while maintaining its original character. They are excellent, attentive hosts and made us feel comfortable during our stay. We will definitely return!

I really liked this ride!…read more I was upset because I was not able to finish, due to mechanical difficulties (FAIL). However, I was glad to feel challenged by the 33 miles I DID complete. As the description states, this route begins at the Borrego Springs high school parking lot at about 8am. There, you will find the registration table, optional ride shirts and a whole bunch of helpful people who love the sport! For $59 ($69 if you'd like a souvenir shirt), you can choose to complete a 32, 68 or 100 mile ride. The routes are printed on paper that you pick up that morning, and the street markers are pretty easy to follow. Later on in the day, they lay out the medals and offer pie and ice cream to participants back at the high school. Whenever you finish (hopefully before 3ish) you get to pick up your reward(s) back at the high school. That was a very sweet touch! There are definitely places to challenge yourself along the route, but it is mostly flat and a bit bumpy on the bike path because of cracks. Be prepared for that. There are strategically placed rest stops where volunteers offer you pb&j sandwiches, water and Gatorade and fruit. There is usually a port-a-potty as well. The organizer roams the course, looking for people who need assistance or a ride back to the their car. Unlike the LA ride, there were no volunteers combing the course to look for people on need, so the organizer/marshall's presence was very comforting for me -- plus he showed up in just the nick of time! Everyone who is on the course was super nice. It's just like the bike culture everywhere else! I believe a lot of people drive from long distances to complete this ride. If you participated in the LA River Ride and enjoyed it, you will definitely enjoy what this ride has to offer! In the high desert, the highlights (for me) were the gorgeous valley views, the metal sculptures, and the orange/tangerine/pummelo grove! It's a long drive over their taints to get to Borrego, so make sure you come with a buddy with good brakes!

I've included photos in my review from several trips to Eagle Rock over the years. You start out in a lovely shaded area by a stream, most of the incline is through a chaparral forest with manzanitas and blooming cactus, the last bit is a rolling prairie. The pinnacle of the hike is a huge rock formation that looks exactly like an eagle. I try to do this hike every year in the spring. Tons of flowers and gorgeous rolling grassy hills. This year we had a freakishly hot March and everything bloomed early and then got fried. It was still gorgeous though! We started early when it was still chilly and finished as the heat of the day was coming on. Be sure you keep an eye on the weather. It can get dangerously hot. I recommend a ton of water, hats and sunscreen. On the way home be sure to stop for Julian Pie in San Ysabel!

I had read about this random rock formation shaped like the profile of an eagle when I first…read morestarted doing San Diego County hikes. We tackled this 6.4 mile out-and-back trail in Warner Springs on a recent weekend. It seemed like most of the hikers were completing the journey when we arrived after lunch as they were returning towards the trailhead off Highway 79. You can park along both sides of the road on the shoulder, but don't pull into the fire station lot adjacent to the trailhead. The Eagle Rock Hike is actually a segment of the larger Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT). The PCT spans over 2,500 miles and runs through California, Oregon, and Washington from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. The first half of the outbound portion was rather flat and ran next to a creek that was still flowing with a good amount of water from the March rainfall. There was plenty of shade from the trees in that area. Once you emerged from that section, the path veered into a valley with a few curves and gentle slopes. The landscape looked nothing like what you would expect in San Diego. It resembled the Great Plains with grasses and weeds along with hills and mountains off in the distance. This continued until you could see a set of rocks appearing what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. The approach was from the south side which was the rear of the formation. The view from the north definitely resembled an eagle about to spread its wings. Only one other group of hikers was present when we reached Eagle Rock. You can climb up the back side to the top where you end up next to the eagle's head. Think of photo opportunities like at Potato Chip Rock but without the wait. According to a hiking app, there was an elevation change of several hundred feet. It wasn't noticeable because of the gradual sloping. The round trip took just under three hours. The only real drawback was the lack of shade in the meadows. It was windy during our visit which dropped the temperature by at least 10 degrees in that portion. At the peak of summer, the heat and dry air can make this five-star inland trek less comfortable. PS: Not only is this trail not crowded, but it's very kid and pet friendly.

This is a difficult trail to find, but totally worth it if you're adventurous! The first time I…read morewent we couldn't remember if we were supposed to go upstream or downstream to the waterfalls. We figured we were "down" enough, so they had to be upstream. WRONG! The falls are definitely DOWNstream, so when you first hit the water, start your trek to the falls. The hike down is absolutely gorgeous, with rolling green hills, tree canopies, and beautiful vegetation. When you drive here, you can either hit 79 from 8E and go windy roads through Julian, or you can take 15 to 79. Either way, you're looking at about a 2-3 hour drive. Regardless of which way you're coming on 79, expect to drive about an hour before hitting the turnoff mile marker. Then another hour on the single-lane dirt road that can be extremely scary. Make sure you have traction and 4-wheel drive. Your Prius isn't gonna make it. Bring plenty of water and leave SD early. We left around 8:30am and just barely made it back to 79 before the sun set. You do NOT want to be driving on that dirt road in the dark! Overall, this was pretty awesome. Nothing too strenuous, but the river-hopping was awesome!

I give this hike a 10. it's an easy hike down a wide, beautiful trail. Once you reach water stay…read moreleft. Do not cross the stream at the junction. Left is right, and right is wrong. The water is exactly 3.2 miles from the trail head and the falls are approximately 1 mile further. My total hike was 8.5 miles. The falls were a little tricky to find, not knowing exactly where they were, so just stay left and HIGH on the trail. When it looks like the trail ends at a dry stream bed, cross and look up for the trail to continue. Don't follow the stream or bother climbing over rocks until you get to the pools. It's a gorgeous hike. Not many bugs. Not many people. Lots of oak trees with monkey grass or pastures to lay down by the water edge. Down by the falls the big rocks are smooth and comfortable. Nestled 1000 feet deep in a valley, surrounded by mountains the only thing one can hear is nature. it's about as pastoral as I've ever seen and I hike these mountains 2-3 times a week.
