Squash & caramelized onions with Brunswick stew.
Kevin K.

The Alberta General Store & Deli is as local as local can get. A highway backup combined with a little pre-dinner hunger were the reasons I detoured from I-85. A brief glance at Yelp came up with this little place with 18 Five Star Ratings. ITS A LITTLE HARD TO FIND, BUT WELL WORTH THE DETOUR!!! On a healthy kick, I opted for the Brunswick Stew and Caramelized Yellow Squash and Onions. To encourage community development, they invite visitors to visit the consignment bazar across the street saying, "We'll ring the bell when your food's ready". The dishes were so good, I took four frozen containers of stew home, along with trading recipes with "Chef Chuck". Yes, Charles gave me his recipe for Squash & Onions in exchange for my famous Basel Frittata (includes enough fresh basel to make a salad)--Let me know if it shows up on the menu, I am sure they will make it taste greatL

I've been missing Alberta since the second we even thought about leaving Alberta and the deli!

There aren't enough stars in the world to describe the magnificence of Alberta's heart and soul, which are centralized in the deli. This whole town has unrivaled hospitality, and the deli has unrival-able Brunswick Stew! This deli is a shining example of a Third Place.

The cheerful staff at Alberta General Store!

A great place to stop for a quality bite to eat that won't break the bank.

It did not take long for us to start talking about the Brunswick stew as we looked at the 3 or 4 foot wide stew pot.

We recently decided to "see something new" by taking the slower, less familiar route. Despite having lived in Virginia for over 30 years, we didn't realize that we would be traveling through some of the counties where Virginia's famous peanuts are grown. The first billboards near Waverly caught our attention, but we didn't stop at the first shop that was advertised. We decided that, if there were any other peanut shops, we would stop because Virginia peanuts would make a perfect present for our upcoming visits with some non-Virginia friends and relatives. Thankfully, we found Adam's Peanuts and Country Store soon after. As others have mentioned, Adam's is a true country store, with country smoked hams in crates as you enter, homemade jams and jellies, a dizzying array of peanuts (raw, boiled, salted, chocolate-covered, and more), plus much more. As mentioned, we were there for the peanuts, and ended up buying a whole box full -- about $140 worth to be precise. The quality of the nuts is top-notch, and we appreciated the variety of the products. The prices also weren't too bad though my husband tends to compare these to the giant canisters from Costco! The ambiance of the shop was also country comfortable. My 3-star rating mostly reflects the lack of attention from the elderly shopkeepers. While others on Yelp have characterized them as friendly and helpful, that was not our experience. While we were the only customers upon entering, neither greeted us when we came into the store. My husband asked if they had any samples of the nuts for us to try to help inform our decision on which nuts to buy. They didn't, and they seemed befuddled by the question. Finally, in checking out, I tried to engage them in a conversation about peanut growing in the county, to no avail. March, 2025.

We were nuts about Good Earth Peanuts in Skippers, VA! From Emporia, we got there in a "Jif"!…read moreSituated behind the post office, and past the cute peanut LOVE sign is a welcoming building inviting you to come in and experience peanut heaven! There are barns and outbuildings around the store and a porch that beckons you to the country charm of this place! And yes, we took the token touristy photo of the peanut head! We couldn't resist! We were warmly greeted by the ladies in the shop and we commenced gathering our nutty selections! We purchased a ton of peanut items: a big bag of unsalted peanuts, butter toasted coated pecans, a can of salted peanuts, some smoked ham slices, a bottle of bbq sauce, a funny squishy stress peanut and some other gifts! We wanted some chocolate covered nuts too but we were traveling and it was hot as the dickens and didn't want them to melt! Next time! We had a great time checking out all the jams, jellies, condiments, pickles, nut butters, the ornaments and other items in the shop! Then we headed out to the car! I said, boy I wish the had peanut brittle! And my brother said, they did have some! So I went right back in and bought a couple of containers of the brittle! Mmmm! We opened one right away and this was the best peanut brittle we ever had! Light and airy and crunchy and buttery, not too hard. Our teeth were thankful for that! Go on and get you some! You won't be sorry! This is peanut country after all. And no, Skippy peanut butter wasn't named for this town, but it could have been!

The moment we walked in, we were greeted by the warm, savory aroma of freshly boiled peanuts and an incredibly friendly lady who made us feel right at home. We browsed around and left with two cups of boiled peanuts, 2 lbs of raw peanuts (to make my own), and a can of butter toasted pecans. The shop is full of goodies, including local honey, trail mixes, and all kinds of flavored pecans and peanuts--perfect for snacks or gifts. What really made this place stand out, though, was what I discovered on their website. The history of the Good Earth Peanut Company and the family behind it is genuinely fascinating. Whether you visit first or just want to learn more before you go, definitely take a moment to read their story--it adds so much heart to the experience.
