Officially launched in March 2010, this is a new kid on the block in Chorlton's night life…read more Although it is to the rear of The Lounge bar, the management are keen to stress that this is a separate entity, with its emphasis firmly placed on live entertainment. To this end, an independent entrance has recently been installed, so that access is now via the alley to the side of The Lounge. I discovered this place purely by accident, having gone for lunch with friends at The Lounge early in 2010 and seen workmen gutting the back room, whilst electricians installed a new sound system. February saw a total refurbishment to what had originally just been a relatively small function room, and what was a pleasant but unremarkable space has been transformed into an attractive and intimate night time venue. Checking it out upon its opening, I was pleasantly surprised. The ceiling is now swathed in deep red sheer fabric, creating the feeling of being inside a Moroccan tent, whilst recessed coloured halogen spots, twinkling icicle lights and candles provide warm illumination. Mirrors and artwork adorn all the walls, and the overall effect is both tasteful and homely. The bar's owners have clearly had the designers in. Further transformation is evidenced by the change in entertainment and the clientele. In keeping with the bijou proportions of the space, live music is predominantly acoustic or semi-acoustic. That said, it's not as small-scale as you might imagine. When I attended the first night of the newly-launched Cajun Specials session last week, no less than 12 musicians were playing, and those who couldn't fit into the performance area joined in from their seats! Similarly the following night, which is open mic, saw 13 acts onstage, and the evening ended in a big jam session. The lady next to me remarked that it was 'like having a party in your own living room.' I'm told that the owner of Baroque intends building the bar's reputation as a credible live music venue, and if the nights I've attended there over the past six weeks are anything to go by, it's well on its way to achieving that goal. The ambiance is lovely, and the friendly bar staff just don't seem to be able to do enough for you. It's a very relaxed venue, and I'm told that the aim is also to make it a gay-friendly environment, which presumably explains all the pretty design touches. Prices here are pretty good, with a large glass of wine being £3.50, or under the current offer: if you buy two glasses you get the rest of the bottle free. £7 is great value for a bottle of wine! The only slight drawback at the moment is that the gents' toilet is currently behind the stage area, so male patrons have to either walk through the musicians to get to the loo, or else wait for a change-over between performers. However, I'm told that this will be remedied soon because the re-modeling isn't finished yet. It seems that even more ambitious plans are in the works for this cute little bar, and these will be implemented before the summer. This will just be a quick review - new owners here…read more It's improved a little, just a little but a lot is just as it was before - lacking. Decent beer on tap with a couple of local ales but not setting the world alight. They have added some tvs which is good to watch the footy and live sport - the tvs are also in good positions unlike some pubs where they cram them in the corners! The landlord is apparently going to put the best part of 100k in to it, which is much needed. Hopefully I'll be updating this review with an increase of stars soon!

Some people have travelled the country to see live bands here ! From rock to blues to some dance bands, we've had some great nights in The Railway. Beers not expensive & it's local. It doesn't have to be a massive arena to be good! Look up your band and give it a whirl! You might enjoy it!

Various lagers, Ciders and beers on tap and a great international bottle selection. Staff are all great and have some awesome banter. They host a great pub quiz that is good fun but also not too easy. If you are staying in any of the City Road hotels this is a standard replacement for any of the hotel bars. They Also have a "Cellar Bar" which is used for functions and live music. Not such a great selection but it has a great atmosphere.

The crowd was a mixture of 25+ year olds all enjoying a dance to the likes of The Supremes and James Brown. Unusually for Blackpool the bar has a balcony area which offers a nice view out across the sea. A welcome break away from the dance fodder most of the town is providing.

This could partly be attributed to the fact that I ate a sandwich on the train over from Manchester, but my parents and sister also struggled with their food (chicken wrap; burger; hot dog with chilli). I chose a Buxton New World Saison and a Rhub IPA which were both really nice. The barman had misplaced all bottle openers somehow so I had to open them myself with a bottle opener I keep on my keys. In another place this would have been pretty scandalous but in a self-styled dive/student bar it was just quite funny. Graffiti in the toilets was plentiful and amusing, with both my mum and my sister sourcing numerous numbers to phone for sex should they feel so inclined, and me finding out that one patron loves Bill Murray. If I was a student in Preston I can imagine spending many happy hours in here, and if you're in town then it's only a 10 minute walk from the station and a good option for beers and burgers.

There's live music every night of the week and during the day, a relaxed chilled out atmosphere to enjoy some grub and a cuppa or even sample some of the fine lagers on offer via both tap and bottle. Some of the very best local bands feature on the latest listings, while the likes of Jools Holland and Van Morrison have graced the place in its long history in music. Who else do you need to give the place a seal of approval? Me, you say? Well, it's got it.

Quite a nice pub,with a not too bad stage room although there isn't very much room to move around…read morein front of the band. The bands on offer on the night I was there were all pretty decent,especially My Wooden Pillow and Morgue Orgy,but for some reason although the gig was free most of the regulars stayed in the bar part of the pub. Dissapointing,but hey ho that's their loss and not the pubs fault although by all accounts they hadn't advertised the gig very well if at all. It'd probably be a regular haunt of mine if I lived Wigan way.....
