Wow, what a great little park. I expected the concrete path and the security fence to "protect" us, but what I didn't expect were the many benches and garden areas along the way. Even nearly 18 months after it opened, it still was graffiti free and looking nice. Plus, it overlooked the river and TWO different sets of railroad tracks. Seeing three trains go by while were were playing on it certainly boosted this railfan's review! (And, unbelievably, my cousin who was on one of the Amtrak trains and lives in NYC spotted us train watching as she rolled by!)
We traveled over from the Corning Preserve to Quackenbush square, walked around a bit, and came back. Our toddler liked it when we kicked a rubber ball along the walkway (hot tip: if you kick it and he doesn't get it, you better run because it will roll down the hill!) There wasn't a lot of shade but it was overcast that day so it worked out.
It isn't a huge "park" but it sure beats a barely used highway ramp which is what it used to be. The fact that you can get a nice, different perspective of the downtown area makes it a fun place to explore for a little while. And it is free. And... it is near trains. Don't wake me... I must be dreaming. read more
