This is an amazing attraction located in downtown Anchorage. There is metered street parking and commercial parking garages within a reasonable walking distance. It is right across the street from the tourist center. Be sure to check the times that the exhibit is open because it changes and it is not open all day. It is free, however, but you do have to clear security screening (x-ray machine and magnetometer) before you are allowed to enter. Once you clear screening, you go to the exhibit area and you are off. They have some awesome exhibits here and do a good job walking you through the land and wildlife of the State. Some of the wildlife with exhibits here include whales, salmon, wolves, caribou, bison, seals, bears, and eagles. They tell about the Northern lights, how salmon are a big part of the food chain, the seasons of the State, glaciers, and traveling across the State. I cannot believe this place is free to visit. I have paid to see much less. Some of their exhibits are interactive and others have movies associated with them that you can sit and watch. I really love the whale tail and interactive Northern Lights display. The exhibit area is clean and well organized. The really have packed 10 pounds into a five pound bag. There is also a ranger stationed there can stamp your books if you have them and there is a gift shop behind that station. I learned so much here. This should be your first stop while in Anchorage to give you some background and set the lay of the land. It should be a law that you have to check this place out. But unfortunately it isn't so, I just give it my highest recommendation and hope that you are able to check it out.

I will admit, they did crush my dreams of snowmobiling on a glacier and seeing the Northern Lights because it was too late in the season. But hey, at least I knew. They provide you with awesome recommendations to get you going whether it be attractions, places to eat or things to do. The log cabin in front is more of a welcome center and has some history and a greeter. The larger building in the back is more of where the magic happens. That is where you will find all the attraction brochures and the information of what is operating during that time of year. Both buildings are very clean and organized and they are strategically located by quite a few souvenir shops. There is metered street parking on the street in front of and adjacent to the Center. It was very helpful and got me a good itinerary put together. Like I said, this is a must stop when you are planning things to do during your vacation in anchorage.

Both were solid recommendations. We'd gladly come back at another time looking for more.

We did the Summer Valley & Forest Hike on Sep 4 with our guide, Bryce, and two other hikers. This…read morewas an easy hike for us - largely flat, and beautiful throughout. Being new to Alaska, we didn't feel comfortable doing any hikes on our own, and Bryce was a fantastic guide. He was on time for our pickup, friendly and informative throughout the drive to the trail head, and best of all, he stopped the van along the way for a surprise moose sighting in a lake by the highway. We were able to capture some great photos and videos of the moose grazing in the lake, from a close but safe vantage point, and without feeling rushed. Then the hike itself was great - again, beautiful throughout, and Bryce had great knowledge of the plants and area. He stopped a number of times to bring our attention to plants and mushrooms that are important or unique to the area and gave us time to admire the views at various stops (among them a stunning waterfall). Be sure to bring water and snacks for the hike, as it's long enough that we got a bit hungry. Go Hike Alaska has many offerings; this was the only one we did during our short Anchorage stay, but given our experience, we'll definitely seek them out again when back in the beautiful state.

Some of the poisonous ones were good to know about later in my trip! We saw salmon, she described the trail that comes over from Girdwood, and then we went to a different incredible place too. It is not much of a park, it is more of a green space and outdoor amphitheater (lawn seating only). You will find it right by Anchorage's Visitor Center. There is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance and there are also commercial lots and garages available as well. The park's programming and events are facilitated by the Anchorage Downtown Partnership. In the Summer, the park hosts Music in the Park, a weekly lunch hour music series. The also hosts Music for the Little Ones, on Mondays in the Summer as well. The park is named after civil rights activist Elizabeth Peratrovich of the Tlingit Nation. Peratrovich fought tirelessly for Alaska Native equality. She was the catalyst behind the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, the first anti-discrimination law in the US. The park has been known to have high urban camper activity and they use this place to congregate and sleep frequently. This park does not have much of anything. No restroom, no picnic tables, no benches, no play area. So, its utility outside of a hangout spot or outdoor music venue is limited. It is in the heart of the tourist district though and you may find yourself here catching a quick recharge and strategizing.

Flight was on the ground and we were at the door at 5:55pm. Lady ignored us and locked the doors. There were a handful of renters that were left either finding a place to stay or staying in the parking lot in the rv. Checkout the following morning took a whole 10 minutes! So we had to delay our departure by 13 hours for a 10 minute process. For $4100 to rent the rv, I would think a reasonable amount of flexibility warranted. This delayed us getting to a scheduled fishing charter at cooper landing. The shuttle was also not running so we had to grab an Uber to get there. Be aware of this when considering flight times. The rv was ok.

Tour Company: Alaska Vacation Store OR WHitsett Travel, 330 E. 4th Avenue, Suite 203, Anchorage, AK…read more99501 Tour Operator: Wigi Tozzi 1(877)MY ALASKA (692-5275) Travel Dates: June 30 - July 6 2013 Experience Title: WORST EXPERIENCE DUE TO TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE This was by far the worst tour company I have ever dealt with. The owner of AlaskaVacationStore - Wigi Tozzi - lacks courtesy, etiquette, customer service and professionalism. He has no idea what 'customer satisfaction' means. I am really surprised the way this company operates and how they still manage to be in business?? Experience Details: Made first enquiry call to Wigi and thought of him to be trustworthy tour operator. He sent impressive tour details and quoted a very high price. Even then, I fell for the plan and trusted him - BIG MISTAKE. As soon as I took the bait and made the commitment, his communication style changed from excellent to I-do-not-care attitude towards me. All communications were always one sided...initiated by me... never once did I get a call back from Wigi... Usually the vendor calls customer for payment, but in this case, surprisingly, I had to call him 10 times so that he can accept my payment and finalize the bookings. Due to the high price quoted by Wigi, I had to cut bear watching tour from my itinerary to save myself some money, at the end of the planning Wigi increased the quoted price anyways siting hotel unavailability and other reasons. He completed bookings very late in June even when I said YES in March. His strategy was to make me wait for 2 months, so that at the last moment he can increase price and I'll have no option but to say yes to whatever price and hotel changes he offers me. Terrible and shameless way to make money out of your clients! This has been by far the worst experience for me. AlaskaVacationStore works purely on commission basis and doesn't care what their customers wants. Wigi Tozzi is by far the worst tour operator I have ever done business with. He lacks courtesy, formal communication skills, ethics, and flexibility. He made me pick high priced hotels as part of the package and later charged the extra price to me. In our trip, we could not take the Talkeetna Air Taxi due to bad weather and I asked Wigi for refund. After 2 months of numerous frustration filled phone calls and emails, he finally refunded the amount. I work in service industry myself and after coming back from my Alaska vacation, at least 8-10 of my American co-workers, managers and friends made serious enquiries about AlasaVacationStore and I honestly told them - NOT TO DO BUSINESS WITH WIGI. 4 months of terrible customer service experience!!
