Lady kissing seal sculpture in front of shop

A neat place to stop near port/dock. Nice art selection with natural products made from Alaskan natives. Knowledgeable owner (and funny). Lot of cool and interesting art, and a few tools. Fair price on hand carved Ulu and other knives with bone or fossil handles. The bayleen sculptures and woven bowls are beautiful. Support local business!

Northern Lights over Ketchikan taken in December by a local artist. I had just opened my package so obviously it hasn't been hung yet.

Marvin Oliver's artwork must be seen in person to admire the embossing, the detail and vibrancy. If…read moreyou don't have space or the wallet for a piece, there are smaller prints, cards and stickers to admire!

I caught this only because of one photo I took in the shop. Read to the end before you buy art…read morehere. In July I bought the Marvin Oliver "Sea Bear" serigraph hanging on the gallery wall -- edition #424 of 449, hand-signed in pencil by Marvin himself and dated '94 -- for $3,000 plus $55 shipping. Before leaving, I photographed it: the metallic sparkle in the green ink, the signature, all of it. For the next month, my follow-up emails referred to "Sea Bear print 424" by number, and nobody ever corrected me. When shipping day came, I asked the owner point-blank, in writing: is this an original that Marvin created himself, from the limited edition of 449? Her answer: "yes!" Hours later came the shipping notice -- with a photo of a completely different print, #441, and this line: "I am signing Marvin's serigraphs now (with his passing 7 years ago)." Hold her photo next to mine and it unravels. The pencil signature copies Marvin's name and even the '94 date -- written by her in 2026. The green ink is flat where the real print sparkles. The title is in different handwriting. There's even a small notation under the signature that the real one doesn't have. And when I refused it, the wall print was suddenly "not for sale" -- because, in her words, it's "the only" print in their collection that Marvin actually signed. Think about what that means. The "last few available" prints being sold here are signed by the owner, in the artist's name -- and given the ink differences, I don't believe they're from the original 1994 edition at all. I think buyers are getting replicas. Now think about who's buying: thousands of cruise passengers come through Ketchikan every day in season. You're in port for a few hours, you fall in love with a piece, they ship it after you sail. You'll never stand in front of the original again to compare -- and at a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a print, who would ever question a pencil signature? I only caught it because I happened to photograph the exact print I paid for. To me, that's fraud -- and it's a setup that only works on customers who can't come back. Marvin Oliver's art is genuinely worth collecting, which is exactly why this matters. If you buy here: photograph the exact piece, get the edition number in writing, and get written confirmation that the artist himself hand-signed it -- before you pay. Photos attached.

This is the place to get a real piece of art from your journey up the Northwest Passage. I brought back a wonderful serigraph from the artist Tale. I was also given a very nice embossed paper art. I have it framed against a printed cloth background from Polynesia, all members of the Pacific. Stop by if you can. It is a short sprint to dock 4. Ben

We didn't buy anything but we're not required to. At the back of the store there serving food, we were surprised we didn't know there was food we asked and they told us it was free. We got some food ate it and my friend continued to look around while I went out to eat my food so I wasn't just standing in the way. Two more of my friend come out and join me while we wait for my other friends to finish looking. The OWNER (I'll include a picture of her lol tell me if that's the owner) came and told us (we're all black by the way) they weren't just giving free food and this was about art. I replied that we did look at the art pieces. I was really shocked because we spend a least 10-15 minutes looking at the art. We made sure the food was free before we took any and I went out side to eat to be respectful just in case I dropped anything on some art pieces. We were the only ones she said this to. It our first time in Ketchikan so to experience this in our first weeks here was so upsetting.
